Good Price, the black one is the same price as VideoPro: https://www.videopro.com.au/p-12615-yamaha-yas-109-soundbar.…

Not the best reviewed though: https://www.rtings.com/soundbar/reviews/yamaha/yas-109

    • +2

      I have the Yas-108. I wish I wasn’t so cheap.

      • From memory the 108's sound quality is better, I thought?

        • Possibly, but I can’t wait for another big soundbar sale and get rid of this.

      • Why do you want to sell your 108?

        • +1

It sucks. I want to upgrade to Atmos. Been eyeing Sonos arc but my TV does not support earc or atmos

          • +1

@Brakus: I had the 108 also, I think sound bars are just a bit garbage in general if you are expecting a proper home entertainment sound.
To be fair though, the yas-108 was only $120 click and collect, so I don't think I would ever purchase the 109 at this price.
Same power output, it looks like the only major difference is built in alexa?

            • @DeToxin: My issue was different. The dialogues were not very audible since they get buried under the soundfx. Clear voice didn’t help. It was after I discovered that changing the settings in the app fixed my problem. But I was putting up with it and cursing it for 2 yrs.

              • @Brakus: What settings did you change? The dialogue in movies is so quiet with this sound bar I feel like I have to watch with subtitles.

                • @klonky:

                  1. Download the HT Controller app on you smartphone
                  2. Go to “Surround” option
                  3. Select TV program

That worked for me. Changing the settings on the remote didn’t help. I tried clear voice and other settings on the remote but I guess couldn’t get the right combo.

You might also want to update the firmware of the sound bar.

      • I Have a Yas-107 still in box unopened i got from HN a couple of years ago for $99 will use it one day.

Just did a quick google, the rest I could see were positive reviews…

How do you get the black sound bar from video pro for the same price?

    • RTINGS seem to only like Samsung bars.

I sold mine YAS108B and upgraded to the Sonos Arc and Sub recently. Completely different price and completely different league. The YAS108 wasnt clear in terms of dialogues and you really have to use subtitles. I wouldn’t buy it again

    • I was thinking of getting this for the price, but based on your experience can you recommend the Sonos arc + sub over this?

      • +8

Sonos arc by its self is 5 times the price of this, not really a comparable product… it's undoubtedly better.

      • +9

Yes, Arc + Sub is objectively superior, but it's a ~$2000-2400 proposition vs $219. Whether it's worth that difference is a decision only you can make.

        • I agree with you, it is definitely on the higher side of the proposition… but I guess you only need to buy it once in your lifetime!

          • +2

@Enixon: Just don't try to resell it - nobody will purchase them because Sonos brick old devices. Oh, they also brick them if you don't allow exact location data to be sent to Sonos servers. They are very friendly, Sonos.

    • +4

That's weird, dialogue is crystal-clear on my 108B - esp. if you enable "Clear Voice" mode.

      • +1

I had that on and turned off surround 3D. The kids and wife always had to use subtitles and I resorted to turning it louder all the time. I guess it’s slightly better than the Sony x9000h tv speakers but barely. Again wouldn’t buy it. Save the $200 for a Dolby Atmos compatible soundbar

        • +3

Download the HT controller app and select TV Program under Surround. Thank me later.

          • +1

@Brakus: Updating the software has also made a difference for me. Can only be done via the Soundbar app and it doesn't automatically push an update unless you manually check for updates.

            • @TightKangaroo: I did via USB. I didnt know you can update via the app. How do you do that?

              • @Brakus: How do you do it via USB mate? I suspect I'm running the default firmware from 2 years ago.

                  • +1

                    @Brakus: Thank you kind sir/madam.

                    Edit:
Just tried it. Got the flashing red. Followed the PDF to a T.
Newly formatted usb, 16gb, Fat32, with the 2 .108 files sitting in the root directory, no folders.
                    The red HDMI light flashes.
                    Any ideas?

                    • @lordra: Did you follow the PDF instructions in the Troubleshooting section for the red flashing light?

What version of software did you have originally? Version 6 requires a different method than the other version updates.

I had Version 7.0 and updated today to Version 9.0 within a few minutes with no problems. However I did expect that upon completion of the update, that all the lights would flash a bit more rapidly than a rather slow off and on blinking.

                      • @bickel72: My usb was dodgy. Used another one and it worked fine. I was on 4.0. Now, post update, am on 9.0! Can't tell the difference yet but applied all of Senator @brakus ' settings and will do smore tests tomorrow.

            • @TightKangaroo: Just wondering if you have instruction on how to update firmware for 108b?

        • +1

x9000h is better than a cheap soundbar.

    • +7

I had this problem. I tinkered with all the buttons on the remote and the dialogue is still not audible. I put up with it for more than a year until I discovered the fix: download the HT Controller app (Yamaha) and select TV program under Surround option. It was like a new soundbar.

      • +1

Thank you for the APP can’t believe I didn’t know this

    • Do you have an earc or Dolby Atmos TV?

      • Yes Sony x9000h. It’s very nice tv got the 75” with credit I got from a faulty hisense OLED I returned after 1.5 years use.

    • +1

I have a YAS108B, our hisense TV's audio is horrid. I found it was average for voices too unless you use the 3D surround and/or turn the bass down. But compared to the Arc I completely understand what you mean lol

      • I've just ordered this one as a gift for someone with a Hisense TV too. Any suggestions?

        • Not sure about this model but with my old hisense 65PX and the YAS108B I also had great difficulty setting up HDMI eARC CEC. Not sure if it’s the soundbar or Hisense Vidaa system. Just a nightmare even when setup it will lose connection and you have to reset TV, Reset Soundbar to find it again

          • @Michaelz101: Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I help them set it up. Appreciate it!

  • +5

    "Lowest historical price was $200"

That's not true - I bought it when it was $179 in Nov 2020.

    • +2

Me too for $179! I really liked it though, I'm not audiophile but I can definitely say its better then my TV speakers. One tidbit issue I had though, if you have nothing playing for over 20 minutes it switches itself off and you have to manually switch it back on again. Its like an auto-off feature which can change in the settings. Just FYI if others had the same problem.

  • +1

Would these sound any good as computer speakers?

Just tried my bose tv soundbar and it doesn't sound as good as my logitech z623's….

Guessing tv soundbars have a different sound profile compared to computer speakers?

  • +3

I had the previous model of this sound bar and basically gave it away after so many issues with HDMI CEC. Hope they have fixed it in this model.

    • +1

They fixed it with firmware updates but I can totally relate.

  • Comment not at all related to Yamaha brand, but definitely soundbars. Had been to Costco North Lakes QLD yesterday and saw a decent deal on 2020 Model Samsung Hw-800t 3.1.2 soundbar + wireless sub for $449.97 … RRP is around $750
    Rated 7.8 on rtings.com website

    • That is an amazing price for a really good soundbar. I got it earlier in the year for about $100 more also from Costco. I added the additional wireless surround speakers for complete surround sound. Perfect surround system for my bedroom.

      • Thanks for the review mate, I am planning to buy one & did you get which model of rear speaker kit (swa-8500s or swa-9000s ?)

  • Recently got this model (in black). I haven't had much experience with other sound bars but I was surprised with how good this one is. We use it for our TV and the audio quality is so much better now.
I was very skeptical of the surround sound feature, thinking it was just a marketing thing. I've been very pleasantly surprised. It really does have a surround sound effect. The bass and soundwoofer volume is good. Whatever I'm watching is noticeably not as good when I turn these off (downside now is that I can hear the vibrations of the TV from my room when my parents are watching haha)

The 'clear voice' feature also makes hearing dialogue lot easier. I've used music mode for just music too and it sounds great.

I've had some CEC issues connecting it with my fire stick TV remote but I use the app anyway as it has all the settings there and is easier.

  • any thoughts on Yamaha Ysp 4300

  • Thank you, bought one for Father's Day.

I’d recommend the Sony HTS350 in this price range. And at $205 and direct from Sony Australia.

I got one a couple of months ago for $175 plus used me eBay $50 voucher to get it for $125. It says refurbished but mine was totally brand new. Box has a little damage so I presume that’s why it went to refurb. For the price range it is well and truly good value. See reviews for yourself, they are mostly positive.

Edit sorry looks like the link I put is dead now? No order button.

It’s $395 Brand new. Maybe you can talk to Sony about my original link to see if they have more stock. Sorry if I got anyone’s hopes up. I’ve stuff up 2 suggestions tonight. Time for bed.

    $395. Brand new.

  • Am I the only one who is still happy with the 106 :')

  • A question for who owns this soundbar,
Does the material/fabric covering majority of the item collect dust easily over time? Can you wipe it off simply with a damped cloth or it can only be vaccum cleaned?
    Thay

    • +1

YAS108 owner here, yes collects dust easy and stands out after awhile. But can be wiped off with damped cloth pretty easily

      • +1

        Thanks for your input.

      • +2

I have the 109 and my experience is the same

    • +2

Yes, it does collect dust. Very easily comes off with a little duster.
      Something like this

      • Can we connect via wifi? I had the 108 but didn't sync via arc with my TV and no wifi so i sold it off. Thanks

        • Like connect the sound bar wirelessly to the TV? Don’t think so

  • My second one of this unit has just died last night. Not sure if it's just this model but the PSU keeps dying…

  • My YAS-108 does not automatically connect when TV is ON. It is connected through Arc port.

I have to change TV settings everytime which is very annoying.

Can someone advice how to troubleshoot this please?

    • I switched toslink cable as mine kept dropping and wouldnt connect majority of the time also

    • My Sony TV seems to be working well with YAS 108. The soundbar turns on whenever I turn on the TV. (connected using HDMI cable).

  • I got this last year and use it with projector. Overall sound quality is ok but there is audio delay/lip-sync issue when I connect it via Bluetooth with my phone/laptop. Can't figure out how to solve it.

  • +1

Great product, awesome bass for a bar without a sub. Clear vocals, highly recommend.

  • This or ATS 1090?

    • I just received a response from Yamaha AU

      Hi Adam,

These units share the same hardware so the difference is just the model codes in this case. They are both supported by a two-year warranty.

  • The black ATS 1090 is around $219.20 after discount. Are they the same?

    • I was just looking at this myself and have contacted Yamaha to ask. They look identical and dimensions are the same.

  • Just got mine a few days ago. Will be returning it. Tried every setting but can’t get the same clarity and bass as my Yas-106.
I like the grey look on a white wall instead of black but feels more of a downgrade than an upgrade.
I’ll just stick with my Yas-106.
