Which Brands Do You Boycott and Why?

Hey everyone,

I recently thought today of companies that I actively avoid and the reasons why.

Harvey Norman is one for keeping JobKeeper payments and Nestlé due to multiple reasons.

Please explain in the comments which companies you boycott. An explanation and link to relevant documentation/articles would be good!

    Blah blah blah

    • -1

      Ironic.

  • If you're talking about joints I will actually go out of may way to avoid (and in so doing incur additional cost), then Harvey Norman and Optus.

Many others I will attempt to dodge (and usually do so) … Kogan and eBay probably top of the list.

  • +3

    I Boycott Countries.

    • +2

How's that working out for you?

      • +2

Well their lifetime boycott of Afghanistan is working well.

      • +1

Fairly easy boycott at the moment

  • +13

    F Nestle.

  • EB Games and Harvey Norman. My reason is the ridiculous mark-up compared to everybody else. I will shop there but only if its a deal I just can't ignore but usually will just get JB or GoodGuys to price match.
Also Aldi, for a number of reasons…

    • +11

      That's not a boycott.

That's an aversion to paying OTT prices. Just like everyone here.

      • +3

I boycott everything but homebrand and discounts, because I'm an OzBargainer.

        • I tried homebrand paper towels never again! Handee Ultra definitely worth it :D

    • +1

I am looking at buying Ghost of Tsushima on PS4 and I note the EB Games price for a used copy is only $1 cheaper than a new copy at JB Hifi. Maybe I will have my OzBargain Membership torn up but I would rather pay the extra $1 for a brand new copy from JB just to stick it to EB Games (And without being mean or aggressive because it's not their fault, I would let the EB employee next door know why).

    • +18

They have to fight Ivan Drago?

      • +2

        If he dies, he dies.

      • +3

        We're all dying everyday

    • +7

I took the death jab and now waiting to die…

      • +6

100% of people who get the vaccines will die.

In other news, 100% of people who drink water will die.

        • osmosis all the way baby!

    • +10

Heatlh care workers are required to get a set number of vaccines also.

If you need emergency care are you going to boycott hospitals also?

      • +6

I hope they do. Have a spine.

      • +5

You bet they don’t. The moment any of these anti vax needs an ICU bed, they will be the first one there taking it.

    • +2

Can you elaborate on this death jab thing. First time I've heard that companies mandate that their staff die

    • Oh no! Not the death jab!

  • +3

    PayPal

  • +22

    Apple

    • +2

Yeah, I'll second Apple. For their anti-consumer stance and walled garden approach.

  • +17

Whirlpool forums. The mods over there are overly sensitive.

    • +2

Seriously? Without them this forum could be bogged down.

      • stormcat is the shittest

        • thor would be in the running for the biggest tosser.

  • +11

I wonder no one mentioned Xiaomi.

    • +5

I like Xiaomi, it's one of my favourite brands :)

      • What's wrong with Xiaomi?

That's what I'll get after my Huawei no longer serves.

    • +3

probably too afraid to get hard negged 😼

  • +26

Ozbagin. Filthy, nasty cheapskates who only care about deals

    • +11

      Ozbagin

      I'm not bagging that.

      • +4

He has to preserve the number of keypresses on his keyboard to get more life out of it.

    • Now you are getting personal! :)

  • +3

Optus for continuing to charge me after cancelling with them. It also took me countless online chats, phone calls etc, over eight months to get my money back.

    • Did you bring up Ombudsman during 3rd month? That should cut your turnaround five-fold

  • +20

    HARVEY (profanity) NORMAN

  • +8

Everything with DRM, DLC and anything else which further punishes paying customers.

  • Anything that will be made by CD Projekt Red

    • Witcher 4?

      • +1

That’s a hard one, will DEFINITELY not preorder though haha

  • +19

Pretty much any company that uses, "…in these uncertain times…" as an advertising line.

    • +2

You are going to starve to death

  • +14

Domino's for what they've done to the pizza industry here.

    • +5

I’d like to understand your opinion of what they’ve done to the pizza industry. I’ve been blissfully unaware.

      • +4

I am also interested. While the local suburb pizza shop seems to not be as common. The good ones are generally still around and there are a tonne of high end gourmet pizza places too.

        • +1

Dude just left us in the dark. 2 stars

      • +2

I think the comment was meant to say “for what they’ve done to the taste of pizzas in this country”

        • +3

          Username checks out.

    • +3

on the bright side, anecdotally for me and my friends at least, it has made making pizza at home more popular.

    • +4

If anything i think they've done the local ones a favour.

It's the same how Mcdonalds is aiming for a different demographic and market to the gourmet types such as grill'd and Ribs and Burgers etc.
They're not detracting as they're a different market. Even when they brought out the 'gourmet' angus range it didn't influence Grill'd as they're aiming for different clientelle.

For Domino's they're the quick, easy, salt filled, cheap fix that you'd want if you're stuck for cash. People are still buying local, quality pizzas as domino's doesn't fill that void.

    • I love Domino's. Best 'fast food' pizza. Completely different food to classic Italian pizza places.

    -Harvey Norman
    -Uber
-Any food delivery that treats their people as contractors
    -Mondelez
    -Amazon
    -Nestle

    • +5

Uber: Oh we bribe state gov's. Got rewarded for breaking all rules. Introduced illegal drip pricing. Brought in 100k + illegal Sham Contractors!
Gerry H. Oh my girlfriend does it for me! She can copy uber as I am the good sliley kid that brought extra taxes to the little man in the street.
Mondelez: We re-structure our company upon every audit. Running from the law is cheaper than compliance.
Amazon: I am Goff! Sold my own wife for a bargain. Now Scotty can look after my kids.
Nestle: Water is no longer a basic human right!

      • -1

That nestle one has been debunked for like a decade now

        • Ok after being off booze for 10 years I can taste the different waters. Magnesium is perhaps the most useful stuff my RO filter takes out. So I have invested into a re-mineralise cartridge. Now I need a tap before this to supply things like the car battery or steam iron. What we save on bottled water goes to quality organic (if we can see it) produce. Nestle also turned me into a capsule addict!

    • Which food delivery companies pay their workers properly, if you don't mind me asking?

      • I think menulog shifted or is trialling wage employees. Could be wrong.

Also, just because everyone is dodgy, doesn’t make it right. Just means they’re all unethical and dodgy

  • +20

"I won't shop here unless it's on sale, then I'm happy to give them my money"

    -This thread.

    • Good to see I'm not the only one. Most of these comments are basically "boycotting" places that have a higher price or shonky unreliable products. That's not a boycott that's common sense …

    • Incorrect, the things I personally listed, I will not use.

    • I think most are saying if they can get it for the same/similar price elsewhere they will. Sometimes a bargain is just too good to resist.

  • +3

    Nestle, Harvey Norman, Kogan

  • +2

Nestle, but not really because they sell my favourite snacks. I swore I’d stop shopping at certain companies after they wronged me in some way, but I can’t remember who they are now. Officeworks was one, but their delivery is so fast that I can’t boycott their website.

    • -7

Learn how to use a comma.

      • +3

        I would, but I can’t be bothered.

      • +1

I can't see what's wrong the grammar. You should make a corrected one and state which rules you have implemented and why. There's a ridiculous amount of different rules for when and why you would use a comma. https://www.grammarly.com/blog/comma/

As far as I'm concerned, if you can understand what the person is intending to convey, then they are communicating correctly. If you are pissing someone off just because their format of language doesn't conform to your "rules", you are communicating poorly.

      • -1

Hungover? Room spinning? The punctuation's fine.
        Oops.

    • You should keep a blacklist on your phone.

  • Are people really "boycotting" a company when they choose not to purchase their products? I don't think a bunch of people on a bargain-hunting website deciding not to purchase some products is punishing these companies…

    • +1

      What would have them do?

    • +1

Yes they are. The term 'boycotting' doesn't include a result threshold.

  • +1

Just Harvey's, Kogan and Aussie BB would rather sit on a cheese grater and spin sideways

    • +2

      Why ABB?

      • +4

Maybe he doesn't like their flow meters.

      • I'm interested in this one too, I have only had really positive experiences with them since I joined them a few years back

          • +3

@Guerilla89: Sorry I'm confused, Aussie Broadband don't have anything to do with Telstra?

          • +3

@Guerilla89: You clearly know very little about NBN and ABB. This is all wrong.

            • +1

@wombat81: Yeah I looked it up. Turns out I was totally wrong. I wonder where I got that from, oh well.

      • +3

Sick and tired of seeing deals for new customers only and not looking after their members since launch

        • That's how deals work, they're designed to attract new customers; why would they give deals to people who they are already extracting money from?

          • @smartazz104: But ABB do do things for existing customers. They're referral bonus system is great.

        • Time to get that 6 month recurring calendar entry going to change between Superloop and ABB

        • I generally agree that most companies dont reward loyalty, however personally ABB have been really good to me. They were upgrading their network and my router wasn't going to be compatible, so they sent me a free one, then a few months back, the upgraded me for free from 100/40 to 1000/50 at no extra cost. So for my experience I definitely appreciate that they have looked after me.

    • +2

ABB ? They are selling blood squeezed from a stone. Blame the Nothing Bloody Nothing network!

  • +22

Telstra can get f’d as well ,

The hate is strong in this one.

Use your aggressive feelings, boy. Let the hate flow through you…

      • +4

Love Star Wars… would never boycott.

        • +1

          the new ones… surely…
