The new models must be close to being released…

    • New models?

      • yep, due sometime this year…

        • going by the table the base model will probably have 1gb of ram…

          • -2

@Jazza2400: I'm hoping for a dodecahedron form factor.

        Speculation only.

        • Speculation only.

          No, mathematical modelling. Linear regression.

          • +4

@jv: Sample size isn't large enough for linear regression.

        • Eagerly awaiting for new model….

Anyone heard any news for next model?

          • @ShinyDiamond: No leaks. It is a guess based off previous release dates.

            • +5

@Twix: They have historically released every 2 years. 2015/17/19. That however does not predict future releases.

@2pro4sho: Especially with the world in its current state.

No, but it is a good indicator, so I'll wait for the new models…

@jv: Me too. I own the 2015 model and the newer models never offered any compelling reason to upgrade thanks to full update support and not owning a 4K TV for the upscaling features. Surely the 2021 model will get a new CPU and some upgrades worthy for a purchase.

Short answer, very unlikely. Nintendo Switch and the nVidia Shield use the same nVidia SoC. Since everyone was expecting a new an upgraded 4K capable Nintendo Switch at the end of 2021, there was an assumption that we might also see a new nVidia Shield. This assumption no longer applies to this year, because Nintendo announced an OLED version of the switch using the same old SoC. And if nVidia had a newer/stronger SoC available, it's very likely that Nintendo would have jumped on it and released a more power Switch.

      • Short answer, very unlikely.

        Doesn't mean it wont happen…

I got excited for a sec. I thought it is $60 with $249 Netflix credit :-)
If you are into Netflix it may be a good deal. Otherwise, the Pro version was going for around $250 mark recently, and that is a better deal in my opinion.

  • Although nvidia shield is a beast, mine died out after 1.5 yrs. No power at all. Dead motherboard! Not saying don't buy it… But just sharing my experience.

    • Which model?

      • Just the standard shield. Non pro version.

Have you had it replaced under warranty? Even if the original warranty would be 12 months, I think you can claim the statutory warranty, as the product should last more than a year.

      • Yeah claim ACL statutory warranty. That's what I did.

        • I bought it off ebay though

I bought the Pro version this weekend ($350 Good guys). Coming from using an HTPC I’m amazed by how good this product is. Still learning but it’s fully replaced every function I used the HTPC for except for web browsing and usenet etc downloads but I’m sure there is a possibility the Shield will also have this functionality.

You can sideload apks, so install Aptoide (and AptoideTV). This will give you all the apps you need. Connect a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and you're set. You can install Nzb Leech directly from the play store onto your Shield as well.

      • what other cool functionality does it have? i have one and just use as expensive android tv… installed some apps but what else would do use this for other than some streaming services and xbmc? nzbleech would allow direct viewing/streaming from usenet?

i havent touched the game controller since trying when i first got it.. might be good, just havent tried again yet. would be good to find some extra cool features or use of this.. currently just a faster but much more expensive android tv.

        • Install RetroArch and play some retro games!

          • @Mr Fusi0n: I still have my ghosts and goblins rom if this will work?

  • Umm, for those who have "overseas" Netflix, can we still apply this credit? Or is it only applicable if you have Aussie subscription?

  • Obligatory… don't buy the nvidia shield tube, only the Pro.

    • Why? I have the tube and it's fine.

      • It has problems with how it manages its memory and some apps. High bitrate local 4K is especially problematic. If your just using lower bitrate and streaming online its mostly OK. I own both.

        • I've never had a problem with 4k. Is it a common problem, or just your machine?

          • +1

@bigAlOz: It has to be high bit-rate 4K. Not your standard 4K or HDR. It especially impacted Plex. Most people would be using bitrate that will be low enough for it to not cause a problem as they are storage space conscious, but that still leaves more than enough people impacted. I'm not sure if its fixed now, but it wasn't after more than a year from launch. It was widespread, all over forums. Only guaranteed way to resolve then was to get the Pro which is not impacted. For me, it made it basically useless and poor value, little better than the vastly cheaper VodafoneTV box. Nowaday better off getting a CCwithGTV than the Tube.

            • @Xizor: Fair points. Wasn't aware of the issue. I only use the tube in my bedroom. I've got the older shields in my lounge room and home theatre room

        • Can confirm. Compared to the pro, the tube frequently had issues due to ram and froze with certain apps and plex for me, requiring a reboot. Particularly when streaming 4k/hdr content. Youtube and netflix seemed to be the only apps which don't have issues with 4k.

          • @[Deactivated]: I always limit these android tv devices to 4 background apps max (developer settings) and it seems to help immensely with performance (sonytv, nvidia shield 2015, google tv). IMO it doesn't need to be running much in the background because it's not syncing email or checking my location every 3 seconds. It needs to be running what I'm currently watching (for my use case).

      • I also have the Tube version and it runs fine. Only annoyance is that it loses sound which requires me to restart it. Apart from that, its a fantastic media player.
