NetGear MS2000 2 Bay NAS $79

42

While browsing through their specials I found this looking pretty cheap.
Doubt it's going to be half as good a HP Microserver but for $79 bucks its pretty ok for an entry level NAS.

    ahhh

the Netgear Stora… be aware of this nas… its always been $100 from mwave or whatever and they always have stock

there's a reason for this… it has a lot of strange quirks with it

if you could drop freenas on it, it'd be good

    • I bought one of these from Office Works and returned it the next day - I can't remember all the reason, but it was very limiting in terms of setup & performance…

Most NAS devices like this are poor (often 5MB/s transfer speeds, 10MB/s max, my experience) performance. I recall there was one of these models that required Internet access to be able to use it?

        • yes, that's this one. Without internet access, it cannot be used. All that stands between the internet and all your files are a username and password.

        • speed i'm not so worried about but the incredibly silly hurdles Netgear put up is ridiculous

it should be able to be configured on an internal IP and you should be able to map drives via windows smb… i don't know how Netgear think making you jump thru hoops is useful?

I have one of these and its not like super performance - around 20-30MB/Sec when transferring large files. BTW.. you DONT need internet to access your files if you are doing it as a SMB or FTP share on the network. Its only required when you are trying to access your files remotely outside via the internet - a secure way to do it without punching holes in your firewall as such (since you need to go through Netgear's gateway).

Even still, if you do want to use localised http to access your files locally (huh?), you can turn that feature off using terminal access (root).

Its not too bad other than it only supports 2 drives and limited to RAID 0/1/JBOD (4TB). I bought mine from OW for $160 with 1TB drive about 18 months ago.

I set one up for someone. It's a nightmare… it does not permit native access to its file system, and the only way to configure it is through a website. It requires software to run on the client to be able to access the stora. It is not really possible to map a drive letter to it, because if the software does not load before the drive is mapped, it won't work. It is (AFAIK) NOT possible to set up the stora without it being internet connected, and without permitting external access to its files. I tried setting up a firewall rule to prevent incoming traffic from the internet to the stora, but this caused the configuration page to no longer work.

    Stay away!

The Stora does native SMB mode and does not require a separate client to access files on it. You can map it as per any Windows share (provided you set it up in the first place). Yes, Internet is required during setup only because you should create an account with the Stora page so that you can access your files via http without punching the holes in your firewall or do a NAT mapping.

Furthermore, it also supports DLNA out of the box and can be used to stream video to TVs, Mobile phones and various media players (including windows media player).

  • Pretty stupid of them not to plonk a basic webserver on the NAS like most of them do.

I beleive there is a new model coming, so perhaps that is the reason for the discounting.

    • No, I think you'd understand why this model is priced at $79, ie, if you read (eg) How to Recover Stora (or similar).

This is way out there… far from ease… AND its hardware is "under-configured" (& not possible to change/upgrade enough to solve issues)

      YMMV

IMO, it's a BIG MISTAKE to CONFUSE this with
-any- HP MicroServers, that we know & love.

(And… I say that BEFORE finding out if the
vendor tries to charge extra for shipping…)

  • More like internet attached storage than NAS
