Instead of replying to 3+ comments I'll just reply to mine. I'm glad yours all worked properly, mine never did. I even bought the stand for it. I presumed the issue was because the mics were mounted backwards.
I had similar experience until I changed the language to make sure it was on English AU and not US. However, performance is still slightly worse than my original 2nd gen units.
I've had multiple Echo Show 5, 8 and 10" models for a long time. The Show 5 is very ordinary, quite deaf, low resolution screen and average speaker. The 8" and 10" have been excellent, no issues with microphone, screen or speakers.
The 8" at this price is a bargain.
Same with me. I think it understands us OK but then it's choices are really bad when it comes to selecting the right song on Spotify.
Plus it displays UK news despite all of our settings changed to Australia. Even Amazon support don't know what's wrong.
Amazon's grand plans for Alexa take over the world haven't been particularly impressive.

If you want it for Photos and video calls, FB Portal.
If you want it for (Apple) Music, this - except for HomePod, it's the only device in AU that supports Apple Music and Spotify. The FB Portal supports Spotify, but not Apple Music.
The photos support on this sucks.

As a question, how could anyone in NSW pick this up? Isn't the whole state in lockdown and can't see how an echo show could be an essential item.

I have 3 and use them as much as a picture frame as anything else! Good as a radio too!
FYI for those considering… this was the worse echo I've ever had. I simply couldn't understand/respond to anything. Literally other echos in the house were responding. 1/10
