Awesome! Cheapest price on staticice is $404. According to the LG web site, this also has a composite input (a rare commodity these days). So, I can still connect Wii, Playstation and karaoke machines to it… deal! :-)

  • Nice, good price for a decent brand Full HD Tv.

    Thanks Op.

TV is not supposed to be used as a monitor

    • I think you're thinking of a Plasma TV? This is LED LCD and you won't have any problems.

The luminance of TV is much higher than that of a monitor because we normally sit further from TV than we do from a monitor. If you use TV as a monitor, such high luminance is bad for your eyes.

        • This is specifically designed to be used as a TV and/or monitor. I've been using it for a year and it's matched pretty close to my iMac's screen. Maybe it has different profiles in monitor / TV modes.

  • Will this TV dim and go to power saving mode after my computer goes to sleep if I use it as a monitor? Or it will have the LG logo or the "no signal detected" message running on the screen all the time?

It goes to black, then eventually turns itself off. No logo jumping around. You could probably disable it turning itself off, the settings menu are very detailed.

      • Thanks heaps for your prompt reply, seems like i will have a new monitor… cool…

  • Whats the refresh rate on the TV function?

    • Tv shows and Movies are almost exclusively filmed at 24fps or ~41.5ms, gaming consoles also run at 24fps.

That's why monitors are more expensive than standard tv's.

      • Thanks but I think we're talking about two different things here? Im referring to the screen refresh rate when using this display as a TV. Its usually 50mhz, 100mhz, or 200mhz. Whereas youre speaking about the frame rate of games and video playback. Not sure :S

        • Sorry my ignorance, a 5ms refresh rate = 200hz.

1000ms in a second and a hz is flashes or images displayed so 1000/5 = 200 flashes or images per second.

        • Huh? The refresh rate would be 50/60 hz otherwise they would rave about it.

I think you are mixing up refresh rate and response time.

Refresh rate is how many frames per second the monitor's synchronization circuitry can lock to. For Australian TV signals this is 50Hz, and you may also see 60Hz with some DVDs/Blurays if you are watching movies produced for the USA. Computer video cards usually put out 60Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz and a few other rates. This was to reduce flicker on CRT monitors - a problem that doesn't exist with LCDs.

Some televisions claim to be able to do 100Hz or even 200Hz, by taking the 50Hz signal and interpolating three frames between every frame transmitted by the TV station. I think most people won't be able to tell the difference, I certainly can't.

Response speed is how fast the "liquid" part of the LCD display can change state from letting the light through to blocking the light (although some manufacturers use different tests to make their monitors have better figures). Slow response speeds means fast movement is blurred - when watching tennis, for instance, the player's legs will be blurred when moving, and you probably can't see the tennis ball at all. 5 milliseconds is a fast display, more than adequate for watching movies or sport, but some gamers may want a faster display if they think a few milliseconds will help them beat their opposition.

A note on the 1-year warranty on this TV/monitor. LG classifies this as a TV and not as a monitor, so there is no 3-year warranty and there is no zero-defect pixel policy. Its dead pixel policy is on a case-by-case basis.

I cannot refer you to any documentation saying this because LG itself had trouble finding it. The above info is the result of 4 telephone calls and 2 e-mails over a course of 3 days.

Contrast this to Samsung's TV/monitor offering. Sammy classifies its products as monitors, so they have 3-year hardware and perfect-pixel warranty. My money went to Sammy.

    • No education tax rebate either. May have an IPS panel which would be a plus.

    • Its from officeworks which has a no questions asked return policy so not really a problem here

      • Sure enough regarding dead pixels etc, but still only one year warranty.

It is always this price at least one year before. It was actually pretty crappy.

It was $4 cheaper last year..

    • And this is a newer/updated model btw..
