listening to this right now, should I get another as a backup pair?
my one's less than a year old, how old are the ones you guys have?

p.s. this was my first audiophile earphones and they're amazing, buy at this price if you're considering it

    • +1

I think you'd be better off saving the money for an upgrade in the future.

    • +2

I've had mine since July 2017 and it's still going strong. Use them almost every day, only just had to replace the earpads because the velour detached inside the earcups.

I would not purchase a back up pair, save the money, go for something better next time.

      • is there anything better? mine is super old (got it late 2014). Still serviceable but the wear and tear on it is ridiculous now.

        • +1

Honestly, at this price range, not really. Headphones that would be considered significant upgrades from the Fidelio X2HR would likely be 2-3x the price, something like the Hifiman Sundara.

  • +1

Gosh they look a lot like Grado's.

    https://gradolabs.com/headphones/prestige-series/item/130-sr…

Its probably a better build though. I was always worried about breaking mine heh.

  • +3

Man.. I bought these like 8+ years ago no joke and they're still going strong. Super durable and comfortable. I kinda wish mine had broken by now so I could get a new pair but they aren't showing any signs of dying. Highly recommend these to anyone especially at this price.

  • Just picked up a pair. I've got a bit sick of my Audio Technica m50x which tend to get uncomfortable to wear very quickly.

    • I hardly use my m50x due to small and shallow earcups

  • +1

Wow one of my ear cups from my ESW9s snapped and now I have an order for one of these. I swear, the audio Gods are watching…

any reason why I shouldn't just grab prime for a month for $6 to avoid the $26 shipping cost?

    • +2

      Sounds bargainer enough for me!!!!

    • +1

More surprised you didn't have prime in the first place!

      • I'm not much of a consumer.

        • +2

A prime membership will also give you access to other prime services like Prime Video and Prime Gaming, all up I think it's the best value subscription I have.

          • @BadAtNames: I agree, it gives a lot for $7 a month or whatever plan you're on.

          • @BadAtNames: don't forget amazon music as well

            • @bakemon0: Plenty of benefits, like Prime Reading. I just didn't want to list all of them and I mainly use Video, Gaming and the normal shopping one

  • which of these is best: dt990, 58x, shp9500, k712 or the x2hr?

    • X2HR imo.

      Comparable alternative is the HD560s.

  • This or ATH M50X?

    • This, easily. They kill the m50's in every department.

      • Haha thanks.
        However, this or SHP9500?

        • This one, the X2HR.

I have the shp9500 and am upgrading to the X2HR.
Nearly every single review says it’s an overall improvement over shp9500.

      • I just had my X2HRs delivered the other day. Not as good as my ath-m50 other than comfort. Distortion is higher and bass not as clean and deep imo. Perhaps I need to burn them in?

    • This. M50X is completely superceded from newer closed backs like the K371.

  • What's the difference between the 'Predecessor' and '40mm'? Is it just appearance?

    • +2

No, not just appearance. This 'predecessor' is 50mm, and it's an open back headphone that's well regarded in its price category. The 40mm on the other hand isn't anywhere near as good or well regarded.

  • +1

Use these with my soundblaster x3 and they sound awesome.

    • Do you rate the X3? Considering it for when I have more critical listening sessions at my PC, currently using a JDS Labs C5D

  • Thinking of dipping my toes in the hifi space for something <$300, can anyone more well versed suggest if I should get this or go instead for something a bit pricier such as the HE400SE ($219) or HD6xx ($300)?

Mainly listen to orchestral and rock music

    • HE400SE and HD6xx require an amp to sound good. So you need to shell out an extra $200-$300 for a decent one
X2 can be driven easily with a phone or laptop

That said, X2 is designed for modern music (pop, EDM) so they probably won't be good for your music type.
Think Grado is the best for rock but they are uncomfortable to wear as hell.
Would say that the safest option is HD6xx, they are the most recommended audiophile headphones on the internet so it should sound good with most music. But then again you need to spend extra for an amp. I own both HD6xx and X2 and would say the former is a clear upgrade.

      • Hi Danny,
I have the HD599, in your opinion are these an upgrade. I have a Schiit modi 3 and vali 2 amp, LG V30 and another DAC.
I am wondering if I should just buy a pair of HD600's?
Would be interested in your opinion. I will add this also as a general post.

        • I have the HD599 as well. X2HR is not an upgrade. HD600 is.

  • Anyone using these for mixing and editing? I’ve been using my HD6XXs but they leak too much for studio stuff and editing at home with kids doing school from home.
These claim NC but I presume they just mean passive sealing, which for an open back usually isn’t particularly great.

    • Best to go closed back options such as AKG 371

      • I was planning on getting the Sony MDR7506s but for the lack of a non-replaceable cable (where my last pair died). So was leaning towards the MT50x, but will have a look at the AKG 371s.

    • DT 770s are a good closed back and great for studio work

      • Fixed cable though, would get the MDR7506s over the DT770s, much nicer audio profile.

  • are these much an improvement over the X1?

    • +1

They are but it doesn't worth the money if you already have the X1.
Buy sth that are clear step up like the HD6xx or Sundara

  • I'm tempted to buy this although I have Gen 3 A40s and don't exactly need a new pair of headphones.

    • ozbargainers never need anything. We come. We see. We buy

  • +2

    wish these were closed back
in a small house and am scared people will hear what im listening to lol

  • I have Hifiman HE400i Ver.2020.
    Do they sound similar?

  • +1

    Bought! Thanks.
“don’t really need one but why not”

  • Probably my favourite pair of cans. Love them.

  • +2

Sennheiser HD599 (black) are currently $174 from Amazon (UK).

  • Can you use them for gaming?

  • Thanks OP. Bought another one. Now I have 3 and I don't have to move them room to room.

  • Was cheaper during Prime day but still a good deal.

  • Thanks OP. I’ve been looking for a pair of good quality open-back headphones for gaming. I’m thinking these will be a big step up from the Bose QC35 II I have been using.

  • Hi all,
I have the HD599, in your opinion are these an upgrade. I have a Schiit modi 3 and vali 2 amp, LG V30 and another DAC.
I am wondering if I should just buy a pair of HD600's?
Would be interested in your opinion as sometimes we jump on these things and end up with sub par products because they are shiny and 'cheap'
    What are peoples thoughts?

    • HD599 is the same as HD598 isn't it ? Depends on your music type. I've heard HD598 before and they sound kinda boring to me, too relaxed and not energetic enough for pop music. I AB'ed them with my X2 and prefer my X2 as they sound much more fun.
That said, since you have modi 3 and a tube amp vali 2, go for the HD600 or HD6xx, no brainer - X2 don't really benefit much with dac/amp. I haven't heard the HD600 but HD6xx/HD650 pair really well with tube amp.

      • +1

As mentioned with your amp/dac gear, it's a no brainer to get something harder to drive like the 6XX or go planar magnetic like sundaras that scale with gear like that.

  • How are these for gaming?

  • +2

Thanks for posting this OP, I received mine a few days ago and they're great. I really like how they sound, I've never had open-back style headphones before and I now understand what I've been missing out on, well worth the money!

    • +1

      Glad you're happy with them!

      • +1

I too just got it last Friday, have been using them over the weekend, and they are an absolute upgrade for me. Only problem is that I have a relatively small head and they are a weebit loose on my head (and they look really funny on me)… :/ Still love them though, so thanks for the post again!

  • I got mine last Friday too and holy shit do I love them. The bass is awesome. Perfect for hip hop music.

  • +1

Been waiting for mine to turn up. Just checked tracking order and it was auto-refunded. Did that happen to anyone else?
