For a "pioneer" and "top rated on Windows Store" app / dev, there's no info on the company / dev whatsoever, and the social media accounts linked on their website don't exist (they are just # links back to the main page).

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/do-your-research-before-downl… talks directly about just this app / developer. Please read as this raised quite a few red flags.

I have had these concerns about many things posted here on ozB

    • +2

Thanks for the head-up. That's certainly suspicious. Shocking if MS don't veto apps well enough before they allow them on their store. I just kind of assumed they would be better than that?

        Narrator's voice: they are not

Shrestha Files Pro is also free

  • Just use web based software instead.

    IARC 3+

Why are 3 year olds allowed to use this ?

    • +3

      You're in luck, jv.

      • +1

Yep, but you have to wait another year !

    This is trash

Just download free open source imagemagick It runs on Linux, Windows, Mac Os X, iOS, Android OS, and others.

    https://zwbetz.com/convert-heic-images-to-jpg/

    To convert heic to jpg:
    mogrify -format jpg *.heic

    Another free https://imagemagick.org/script/download.php

    convert a.heic -quality 85% a.jpg

    • Why not 100%?

      • +2

        size

  • Just because something is free doesn't mean you should use it.

Manufacturer codec still can be downloaded for free. Please use this link

    ms-windows-store://pdp/?ProductId=9n4wgh0z6vhq

    • this.
get this tagged to your MS account and you can use across different windows systems (when logged in)

just use IRFAN VIEW + free HEIC codecs from Microsoft

  • +2

not that I care to have this app, I find it curious that linked article is nearly 3yrs old, yet the app has 'survived' ever since to still be available for purchase. Logic would suggest sufficient issues would've been raised with MS long before now to have it taken down?

    • +1

Except that Microsoft does not run a walled garden like Apple and really doesn’t care about moderating its app store

    • +1

3 years, and where is the devs social media presence, who is the dev? surely they could have addressed the concerns raised in the article… if they were legit.

      • +1

maybe I was not clear enough. I was in no way standing up for the dev or the product here. I was merely making a point that in my logical thinking Apple/MS/Google would be (or at least should be) reasonably diligent in trying to protect their customers from any rogue apps

        • +3

Sorry, that wasn't a shot at you, I was agreeing that even with 3 years passed there's absolutely nothing to suggest it's a legit developer.

Wrt Microsoft etc, just gotta look at the quality of their updates to Win10 for an example of their diligence. lol. The amount of times I have to go through and turn off stuff "again" after it was switched on, or even uninstall / disable stuff they've reinstalled or enabled is beyond a joke.

Am I missing something? I use Microsoft paint to open any image > save as > then I select another format

Same with word documents to PDF. Open word document > save as > select PDF format

Costs a bit of frustration with MS software, otherwise free

    • Yep but you have to install the HEIC codec I thought, first?

    • I don't know if HEIC works by default in Win10?
I don't remember installing the store app on my new laptop but it does have one, perhaps it carried across automatically with account link?

Mine has the free Microsoft Corporation one "HEIF Image Extensions" and seems to work fine.

Don't see why anyone would install some unknown sus markdown bait version when MS themselves provide one?

      • the codec needs to be added to your ms account. but still needs to be manually installed if you are viewing HEIC files.
once the codec is installed, the native MS photo viewer will work on HEIC files. no other 3rd party software needed.

    • Was looking for batch conversion software. In the end I just ended up doing what you suggested, didn't take too long. I didn't need to install any codec AFAIK.

      • Does Affinity Photo do batch? I think that with the installed Microsoft Codecs might be a good choice as I've often seen in advertised on sale here.

  • I’ve +1-ed the above free tools for converting. There’s a lot available that aren’t Microsoft Store apps.

I wanted to say though, people use the Microsoft Store?! Need to push back against Microsoft building a walled garden app shop for Windows. (Yeah we call them shops in Australia not stores. Anyway. )

I’ll just keep using Linux for anything but work. Especially seeing where Win 11 is going.

Microsoft does have their own official add-on.
Microsoft has flaws but why use some unknown random pretending to charge for what is basically a part of Windows?

Not a bargain, has a high potential for malware, now or in the future as an update and there's no need for this as Microsoft offers the same codec for free as mentioned above.

Also, as others have said - why use the MS Store at all?
