Samsung Odyssey G7 27" 240Hz Monitor $711.55 Delivered @ Samsung Education Store

630

The lowest price I've ever seen for this best-in-class monitor, which almost never goes on sale (RRP typically $999). As far as performance and contrast ratio goes for a 1440p 240Hz monitor, no other monitor on the market comes close.

Reviews here and here

Previously bought this as part of the klarna PCCG deal and very happy with how it performs. Curve is easy to get used to.

Updated G7 (G70A) is also on sale for $1,169 which imo is a downgrade.

$50 newsletter voucher cannot be used on monitors.

You've clearly never seen the new HDMI 2.1 model in person if you think it's a downgrade.

    • -1

Other than sharpness, the new one is a downgrade in every other way and was a stupid decision by Samsung. They literally had the best VA panel on the market and just threw it away

      • They've got CSOT producing the panels now, as was part of their original (then delayed) plan for selling of most of their own LCD production lines off and focusing on OLED and microLED. The updated G9 shows that they're just as good, if not better.

I don't think the model has been discontinued, either.

        • Isn't CSOT owned by Samsung though? I'd imagine it'd be the same, just under a different umbrella.

The updated G9 uses the exact same panel that's in the original

          • @cille745: CSOT is a partnership between TCL, Samsung and another company. Probably a mandated joint venture by the Party.

Even if they wind up stealing all of Samsung's IP, the world is moving on from the technology.

          • @cille745: The updated G9 panel has over 2000 dimming zones , compared to 10 for the original. HDR and dark scenes are miles better

            • @piston3461: Yes I have both, only the backlight has changed, the panel itself is identical

    • +1

      Edited to reflect that, thanks.
I clearly have not seen the new monitor in person. Trips to JB hifi definitely arent essential work.

What differentiated the G7 was the incredible contrast ratio combined with the response times. No doubt the new G70 is good, but it doesn't really differentiate itself from the other range of 144Hz 4K IPS monitors on the market. If that is your preference, all the more power to you.

    • So small.

      • +2

Its huge if you remove your eyeball and slap it on the screen:P

    • I've got the 32" version and it's plenty big enough sitting at the desk.

    • +8

I'm sorry if this is sarcastic but what the (profanity) are you talking about? 27" is in no way small for a gaming monitor and a 55" display warrants a massively different use case to a 27" gaming monitor.

      • It's all relative, no point arguing it. Pro gaming is generally 27" now isn't it? I got a 30" in 2007 and have been going bigger since then- now run a 48" and 34" multi setup.

        • yeah you're 100% right, when talking 30"-40" I understand but, 27" to 55"??? its just a different market isn't it?

          • @fAffY: I guess it depends on the space you have. I was talking about price prospective. I wouldn't spend a special discounted $711 on a 27' minuscule screen. Even if it has 50000 Hz refresh rate. That's just me … and yes, there is a market for TV's as monitors as the late OLED has Nvidia Gsync etc. Watch you tubers

            • +1

@vinni9284: That's perfectly fair! $711 is ALOT for a 27" display, with that said the one you suggested, you said it was double the price which, from your perspective of preferring TV sized displays that cater to a bigger space as bxpressiv mentioned, makes perfect sense to refer to the 55" OLED, I just think that this display while being on the edge of this high end "desk-sized" gaming monitor market, is still more aimed at people with similar sized displays (24-32) at similar prices ($200-$600). That's where my perspective was anyways.

          • +1

@fAffY: I think space is the biggest thing, and I mean width and depth. Reviewers will do a 40-42" monitor and say it's no good because it's too big sitting 40-60cm from the screen. It's like getting a king size bed in a single room and saying it's a terrible bed because it's too big- the bed could be fine but your room is too small.

            • @bxpressiv: Well there's Samsung 49' G9 wide version of the OPs post. They're getting bigger and bigger

            • @bxpressiv: Yeah but the focal point for text usage is still less than a metre away, for those wanting to use just one display the current OLEDs are pretty terrible

      • +1

a 55" display warrants a massively different use case to a 27" gaming monitor.

It's quite clear that this user is not a gamer. They don't seem to see the issue with TVs for gaming lol. Input lag on TVs are insane - This isn't usually an issue sicne they're made for watching content on.

        Pros of 55":
        - Bigger screen
        - OLED
        - Multi-use (TV + Monitor)
        - 4K

        Cons of 55":
        - Lack of high refresh rate - 60Hz vs 240Hz (Debatably, 240Hz is the main highlight of this Samsung monitor - Hence this TV won't cut it here)
        - Too big to use as a monitor for most people
        - Lower DPI?
        - Non-curved

        I think it's quite clear :/

        • wait please tell me you are referring to vinni when you say "It's quite clear that this user is not a gamer" and not me. right??

          • +1

@fAffY: Ohh mb I should have made that clearer. Yes I was talking about Vinni not you haha.

Vinni didn't seem to see the difference and since you were curious I gave this list of pros and cons to answer your question

            • +1

@Zackeroo: Yeah all good, you're completely right although there are some niche use cases for TVs, the input lag makes them kinda bad, unless its a gaming like marketed display with low input lat and HRR since they exist.

        • -1

          you forgot

          oled: <1ms pixel response
          this VA panel: 3ms average

          • @abctoz: Didn't realise that was a thing, wow.

Either way, 55" of 4K 60Hz isn't going to work well as a gaming 'monitor' for most people lol

            • @Zackeroo: The C1 is 120Hz which is what most will consider

            • @Zackeroo: its not great in its current implementation without strobing, but the pixel response times are.phenomenol

  • Can anyone access the education store or do you require specific emails, etc? Pretty sure the Apple education store can be accessed by anyone but not sure how it works here. A friend was after this monitor so looking into it for him!

Yes, just what a student needs. For study…

  • +10

The perfect erm….study monitor! Great price but as a student I really want a discount on the 32 incher. Extra room for more immersive studying.

    AW2720HF .

  • Can anyone who wears glasses comment if they impact on the viewing experience of the curved screen?

  • @samsungau - drop the price of the G9 to a sub $2k mark already would you!

    • Wondering if they fixed the light bleeding and plastic screen peeling & faulty HDR issues. Reviews are very mixed for a ~$3K screen

      • Agree - I believe the problems have been fixed.

If not, it is a rebox, return ship and refund - if I ever end up with one…

I understand the newer NEO version is due next week or something…

Been thinking about the AOC as an alternative option… Although, I wanted something with GSYNC (officially ticked), so would only be the Sammy at this stage in the 49" size.

      • Issues are still there as the neo uses the same panel as the original.

        • Looks like the consumer does the alpha testing and report back via a warranty claim. They could've used alpha/beta testing on this cheaper unit… which is still a $711 rip off. Where's the QC here? Must of been the same dept as the filp flop phone before they've released the update so you're enticed to buy and miss out on the Note 21/22

This or Dell's gaming monitor from those ebay deals for $399?

  • Why is this significantly higher than say the xiaomi 34 inch one. It's VA too.

    Scratching my head if I should go with 27 1440p, 32 4k or 34 1440p.
I have a 3080.. Btw I haven't tested 144hz and above my whole life. Haha

    • This uses Samsung's new VA tech, it's the fastest panel on the market and doesn't suffer from the VA black smearing like every other panel does

      • The only VA panel I’ve seen that has somehow eliminated smearing

    • If I was going 27" I'd want a minimum of 4k@120+Hz

With that said, I went crazy this time and got a Samsung G9 (49") and AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT

    • +1

Don't go 4k, just trust me on this…

I've had both 27 and 34 1440p - either is suitable for you.

Next decision is IPS or VA.

  • -1

    Thanks OP, bought 5

  • I'm planning to get one 27 inch monitor to play some co-op games with my gf (currently my 15inch laptop is just teeny tiny). Is this better than said an IPS panel? I understand the viewing angle is bad compare to the IPS, but given the G7 has stellar reviews, Idk if it will fit as a co-op monitor?

Next in line for consideration is the S2721DGF or the upcoming EX2780Q from BenQ as I have hope for them being one of the good monitors company. Thank you in advance for the input.

    • +2

For your purposes, a flat IPS monitor would probably suit you better. The S2721DGF is an excellent choice. The curve is designed for one person to kind of sit in the middle and get equal viewing distance to the edges of the monitor if that makes sense. Also the viewing angles for 2 people also makes an IPS panel a better choice.

    • Wrong screen

      • this is the C27G75T were talking about right, a VA panel?

  • A shame the curve kills the buy for me. A great deal for the price but I'll just keep waiting on 240Hz until the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM or something similar comes down to below 1000.

    • You won't get contrast like this until OLED and microLED hit 240Hz+.

      • Yeah I would absolutely love proper HDR, a huge fan of it but I've kind of let go as far as monitors go. It's going to be a while before we get OLED on monitors, 4K 144 is far too expensive and I personally think 1440p 240 is the upgrade to take rather than 4k. This is such a great monitor, if only they made a flat version, for 700-750, amazing value.

        • We were a decent chance to get OLED monitors this year, but it looks like we'll see them next year.

42" and 48" UHD panels dictates there'll be 20-30 inch monitor panels very soon.

          • @jasswolf: Yeah, very unfortunate, I'm hoping for the same, feels like I've been waiting forever.

  • -1

Anyone got a confirmation email back yet?

  • How does this fares with the S2721DGF? I’m so in love with the curve of this monitor but quite afraid isn’t as responsive as the dell one.. :/ great deal anyway!

    • It's quite a bit quicker than the Dell

      • Cheers mate!

  • The 32 inch version is now in stock, for $849, saving of $250 over RRP, dumping stock perhaps?

    • is 32 the better size here?

      Out of stock again…
