No Man's Sky is currently $19 at Amazon AU. I realise this price is quite standard these days but the game just received a massive update titled 'Frontiers' which adds planetary settlements (towns finally!) as well as a whole bunch of other stuff. All for free as usual. Well worth checking out if you haven't already.

I have only played it briefly, but it is amazing how good the team have been to those who have bought the game with the continued free improvements.

Perfect redemption. Projekt Red take note

      • Hello Games was radio silent for about a year after release, overhauls take time, its not something that can be solved in a few months by just throwing money at the problem. So do not even bother mentioning that CDPR is a larger studio if you reply. Cyberpunk will also take years to fix if they stick with it, people need to accept this.

It took like 3 years for the game to be what was promised at launch, dont get me wrong, it amazing that they did this eventually; an I do really enjoy NMS, but comparing the "redemption arc" of a game that has recieved 5 years of updates to one that has been out for less than a year is silly.

        • +8

I said 'take note'… ie. start doing something and hopefully soon we will start to see results of labour

          • +1

@CptnObvious: Do you honestly think they aren't doing anything right now?

Do you honestly think they haven't already looked at how other companies salvaged their games?

            • +5

@Vinodra: I hope they have. And if they haven't they should take note.

        • +1

The problem with Cyberpunk 2077 is only the PC version was given to reviewers; Project Red deliberately hid the (last-gen) console versions knowing they weren't up to scratch.

          • +1

@smartazz104: Do you honestly think Hello Games wasn't also aware of the state NMS was in close to launch? Do you know they lied about the game having multiplayer right up until release, among many other missing features they didn't tell people that pre ordered the game about?

I dont see how that is relevant, Hello Games lied just as much, if not more than CDPR.

        • +2

Well No Man's Sky had released 14 updates (+1 hotfix) in the same period Cyberpunk 2077 has currently been released, 2 of which were major content updates of Foundation and Pathfinder. CDPR has released 12 updates (+1 hotfix), so pretty similar in the amount of bug fixes, however CDPR have not provided any major content updates.

No Man's Sky 4th major update (NEXT) met the basics of what was promised by the developers, and that took just under 2 years. I'd state the 3rd year update of Beyond really did take it beyond what was promised and was a fitting title, since then it has grown well past the original vision for the game. Hopefully CDPR start releasing some actual content that modifies game behaviours.

    • +4

Yep. They've done an amazing job with the game. Labour of love for sure.

Is this upgradeable to PS5? [assuming there is a PS5 version]

  • +9

Seriously great game. Free update to PS5 version.

Latest update - Frontiers - just dropped and there's a new Expedition (Timed content with bonuses, sort of like seasons in other games) coming shortly.

5 years old this year. 17 free updates since launch, each adding in great content and no sign they'll ever charge.

I put this on again a few days ago playing last night for about 3 hours. I agree it has improved a lot, but honestly I still find the game tedious and shallow. What's the point of infinite procedural generation if they fundamentally all feel exactly the same.

I appreciate the basic idea and the developer's dedication to improve the game, but ultimately I think it's boring.

    • +4

Dunno why you were negged for having a honest opinion. People sometimes.

      • +5

Yeah my son (who is 16) agrees. We hopped between 7 different planets - he goes "these worlds are just variations of the same basic shit" and frankly I agree. They look superficially different (snow vs desert vs grass etc) but contain the same stuff with the same tasks. I just feel like I'm wasting time by playing it.

        • +3

I do agree that a lot of the planets do look and feel samey but there are some truly awe inspiring planets to find as well as the unique biome planets they added awhile back but you have to get lucky or spend time seeking them out.

          • +9

@dreamstation: You know I also get that some people love it and that's fine. I know other people hate games that I like. it's all good.

The developers really redeemed themselves with this game even if I still don't like it. They clearly put in a supreme amount of effort and that is to be applauded. I really find the central idea of the game very appealing - being able to seamlessly go between underground, surface, space etc. Great concept.

Seems that Amazon AU are out of stock so the current offer is Sold by Technology Titans and Fulfilled by Amazon. Same price and all that though!

  • Update named Frontiers? They are probably trying to rub into the face of Frontier, developer of Elite Dangerous.

    • +2

Maybe. But E:D used the name much earlier with Elite 2 back in the early 90s. And, it's in a similar genre/place.

If it seems like shaming, it's probably more of a homage to the 90s Frontier: Elite 2

I would put more stock in E:D, as their game has VR, more expansions, and more to actually do, even if it's not too different in the long run. And, when Star Citizen comes out in 2065, it can probably use the Frontiers name too.

  • +3

It's also available at ebgames for the same price of $19.

Wish it was this cheap on pc!

    • If it helps, it’s on gamepass, on pc and Xbox?

      • Thars good to know but this seems like the kind of game i wanna own outright cause i can see myself playing a bit. I still have my free game pass trial to use. Was saving for when b4b comes out

        • +1

No worries. I’ve had it on ps4, have it on Steam, and now playing on xbox since it’s on gamepass - decided that if it disappears off gamepass, I may just buy another copy :)

Damn game is an addiction :-p

Also, my first neg. sadness :(

    • +26

      No man's chance

    • +1

There are video games that impress chicks? Wow it really is a totally different generation!

  • I feel like this is a game which would make it on PS Plus! Wishful thinking with what has been on offer recently lol

  • Now is showing only 29$ buying option. Must have sold out?

  • +1

    Woman's sky?

    • +3

      hahahaha….don't be stupid.

      • +1

I stole it from internet historian

        • yes woman's land
          get it right

  • +1

Got it thanks. Traded my launch copy in for rdr2 and regretted it since its been improved.

  • I remember when the game first came out; it was terrible. Bare bones, couldn't do much. All the updates really improved the game.

  • I bought this game when it was new and tried and failed to get into it many times during the intervening five years, and never made it off the starter planet.

A few weeks ago I tried picking it up again, and have logged about 100 hours in it since then.

If you’re into this sort of game – non-linear, self-directed exploration with only limited overall story – then it’s well worth the $20. Definitely not for everyone, but good for what it is.

It's relaxing and somewhat therapeutic for me. The scenery looks real nice.

      • It's relaxing and somewhat therapeutic for me.

I use GTA5 for this. Get in the car, put the music on and just drive around for a while. It helps that you can stop at the airport and steal a helicopter if you get bored. Or get out and just randomly punch someone in the face. It really helps with lockdown.

Me when I platinum’d it almost 5 years ago: this would be great on Vita

Me now: this would be great on Switch

Also me: hasn’t played since like 1.02 or something ancient. Did an hour or so of online MP with a mate a year back and the amount of new shit was confusing. Definitely impressed though, as with everyone else, fantastic redemption story. Could and arguably should have dropped it, but nope. Also on GamePass if anyone is on the Xbox side of things.

  • +2

And to think this was $9 brand new for a long time. Lucky I got it.

  • +1

I like this game… I probably start it once a year, play it a fair bit for a couple of months, then get distracted by other stuff, then go back to it a year later.

I do have to say that I find the focus on base building (and now town-building?) a bit strange. The way I play it I rarely visit the same planet twice, I like the exploration, constantly pushing forward to see the next new place. I built a base because that's something you have to do early on, but it's basically a wooden hut with the transporter thing in it for me to come back and forth when I need to use those facilities. Otherwise, though, the last thing I want to do in this game is spend an extended period of time in one place, so bases and towns don't really hold much appeal.
