That's because you're cheap. The game has been updated a lot since release. It's more than worth 5 bucks now.

I don't like emulators on PC. I have a chippied PS2 hooked to a CRT TV with a big library of burned games on DVD discs
Agreed, fallout 76 is really good now. I've been playing it for about year.
I played briefly when it came out and it was rubbish. Started again recently and I love it. It is worth giving it another shot now
This game isn't as bad as everyone says. I enjoyed it. I've stayed off it for a few months and hoping there's some new content when I head back to it.
New content launched this week. I have been playing since the beginning. Definitely 10x better now.
If only they would patch the game to add 60fps support on PS5 so I can finally get around to playing my copy
guys, fallout nv and 4 fan here, but haven't touched 76 yet due to infamous disaster launch

Also despite being an online only game, there's a rather surprising amount of stuff that you can mod in the UI to your taste even if not technically officially supported.
Pay once for the game, play forever online with other people on a random public server for free. Ongoing content updates like Wastelanders are also free.
There is an in-game store that's pretty much all cosmetic options that uses a premium 'atom' currency that you can either purchase outright can complete a variety of in-game challenges to slowly earn as well.
There is also a optional paid subscription service called Fallout 1st which gives you private servers, unlimited scrap storage, cosmetic bonuses etc, but completely unnecessary to play the game unless you really, really hate the idea of running across another player at all.
