  • How much will I be missing out on by using these without an amp?

    • +2

depends on what you're plugging it into, though probably not too much since its the 80 ohm version. I've used 150 ohm headphones without an amp and it was plenty loud on my pc and laptop (didn't try mobile phone though).

      • Thanks for the reply, was planning on using mainly on my desktop PC and maybe a plugged in laptop. I am planning on getting a small amp eventually but need to do a bit more thinking behind that first..

        • +1

Consider an audio interface. It's technically a DAC and AMP (and phantom power for mics and easily accessed controls) all in one. Though it doesn't do any of them particularly well, it's probably better than the standard motherboard ones and its quite cheap. Though it depends on your budget and needs and wants of course.

          • @Aequitas: Audio interface is actually what I was thinking of, something like the Scarlett Focusrite - just goes to show my elementary knowledge in this area if I'm using the terms interchangeably!

      • Your desktop PC and maybe the laptop also probably has an inbuilt headphone amp. Most good motherboards with a good enough onboard sound have a 600 Ohm headphone amp.

        • I will have to do some more learning about how sound is processed and output - I would be just using the audio output from the b450m mortar max motherboard so also need to understand about codecs/sound cards audio interface etc.

Loudness is only one factor. The pros in a good amp aren't just about the power output but also on it's ability to control the headphones. Switching from a baseline amp (fiio BTR5) to a mid-tier one (topping EX5), I have noticed dramatic improvements in the sound. Just a note for OP.

        • Yep. These are plenty loud with a phone/laptop amp, but sound a lot better with something like a Fiio E17k at least.

    • Not much at all! I used to use it on my computer / laptop / phone on the daily basis, sounds great directly driven that way.
Edit: it was iMac and Macbook pro fwiw, they do have decent DAC

It will still sound much better and controlled on amp, yes, but to enjoy it you don’t need much driving power.

I have a pair and the cheap FiiO amp I bought for them made an absolute world of difference.

Adds so much oomf - I wouldn't use them without them - but that's just me.

    • +1

people online said that you don't need an amp, but when i plugged them (770 80 ohm) into my desktop they were way too quiet, i had to get an amp / dac, so i got the fiio k3 and that was enough to power them.

      • curious as to what motherboard you had/have?

        • b450-a pro

    • Surprisingly, there is a significant difference with these, even though they're only 80 ohm.
You might want to consider the 32 ohm if you're plugging them into a phone

    • +2

For any future visitors to this post… So I bought the 80 ohm version of these headphones, and having used them with my laptop, desktop, and phone, I can say that the audio is sufficiently loud and the sound quality/characteristics are in my opinion definitely superior to the other headphones I've used with some regularity (Bose QC35, Sony WF-1000xm3, wired earphones). Look forward to eventually getting further toys (audio devices) to enhance the experience further!

  • any anyone of you find a deal for Sony WH-1000XM4? Appreciate your help

    • Long shot but I'm thinking about selling mine. It's in like new condition with original packaging and warranty included. I'm based in Brisbane. Let me know if all those stars align haha.

  • Anyone got any deals for replacement ear pads?

My DT770's haven't been touched in a year or so and I'm to cheap to pay $50+ for ear pads.

    • i don't think there are many deals for earpads unfortunately, you gotta shell out for the good ear pads.

    • I have the Brainwavz round memory foam earpads and they are pretty decent quality for around $35 (velour/pleather)

    • I picked up some good quality pads for my Bose QC 35ii from Wicked Cushions.

Great cans, still using mine today after 20 years.

    • Still nice and perky

    • How comfortable are they for long hours at the computer? My Sennheiser HD 25's get quite hot and the clamp pressure is a bit too high for me.

      • I used the non-pro version years ago when doing radio, and they were fine for hours at the desk

      • +1

They're circumaural (around the ear) as opposed to supra aural (on ear) like the HD25s. I have both and the 770s are more much more comfortable, whilst sacrificing some low-end oomph.

  • Great pair - only concern is that the plastic bits joining the headband and muffs need replacing after a while - but they are sturdy otherwise and superb sound.

ive heard dt880>dt770 or dt990s by far.

    • +5

They're really different (open/closed, etc), so don't get sucked in by the "bigger numbers are better" thing.

    • -1

Depends on what you're listening too, and your environment.
In a silent room with a great amp, listening to classical music, DT880 is the best imo
In most situations and with an amp, I prefer the DT770 250Ohm
I didn't really like the DT770 80ohm because I found it too bass heavy and the clamping force is much stronger than the 32 and 250 ohm variants.

I never owned or heard the DT990s

    These or the HE400SE's?

  • I can't get both coupons to work. This code can't be applied to your order.

    • ebay plus?

      • Yes I have ebay plus. Spamming the PXTRA5 on checkout seemed to work until I stopped receiving an error. Weird.

        • that's strange… I just signed up for ebay plus and it worked..

  • Has anyone ever got any cheap replacement pads for these? I've had mine for so long now without changing the pads, they are well past it, but the official ones are like $50, doesn't seem worth that much when you can get the entire thing for 3x the price.

    • just search dt770 pads on amazon

  • this or K612 pro?

Hey OP, any deals on the 32 ohm model?

    • +2

The 32Ohm almost never goes on special

      • They were discounted through an Afterpay deal at Mwave last month. Thankfully I picked up a pair.

        • Nice work! I paid $200 for mine.
          How are you liking them?

  • +1

working for me :D thanks OP
