Apple iPad Mini 6 2021 WiFi 64GB $669 | WiFi 256GB & WiFi+Cell 64GB $879 | WiFi+Cell 256GB $1,089 Delivered @ Apple Edu Store

2260

Team, was browsing the edu store and noticed that the iPad mini is $80 off for the base model/$100 off 256GB etc etc.
Price on regular Apple Store/RRP in retailers is $749.

Pricing is for students, teachers etc

Perfect device for me and I'm sure many others - easy to use one handed because of size and weight but still very legible for comics/ books/video.

Don't forget to combine with Woolies for ~15% back in Woolies gift cards (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/650860) and possibly Shopback/Cashrewards for 1.5% cashback (not sure if it'll work with giftcard payments, but why not right)

Edit: usually new products aren't discounted (much) at launch in the edu store, so this is a bit rare to my knowledge

      • I have access to my Uni webmail as well. Should be all right then.
They haven't charge the money yet. I think last time I bought a macbook pro and Apple charged me after I picked it up.

    • They generally do! I've seen such staff at Apple Stores asking when such customers come to pick up their Macs and iPads for such in the past couple of months, even tho it's Lockdown.

The staff have asked them, and when I've also gone into the big Sydney one on the corner of George st & King Sts, they ask the customer of their education email, and half the time they don't have one. So they're just trying to rort the system to get a lousy measerly 10% off.

Can’t believe in 2021 someone’s choice in the technology they use still triggers so many people.

      • Just projecting their own insecurities.

    • True‼️🤣..😉

    • 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So bloody true‼️

  • +11

Such a shame it doesn't have a 120hz screen, that's really all it needs for it to be perfect my ipad pro 2021 is amazing but the smaller size would be perfect.
Always loved the ipad mini size but times change and 120hz is a must these days.

    • Yes one of the YouTube reviewers mentioned that they would keep their iPad Pro because of that. I’m he said the new mini is like a small IPad Air 4, but with a better processor

    • it will never get that thats a pro only feature.

      • +3

and yet they don't release an ipad mini pro.

like i said such a shame apple's being apple again.

  • +1

If watching 16:9 content, what is the size of the image? Just trying to gauge how much bigger it is than my 6.8" 20:9 phone for media consumption.

    • +1

The old one was perfectly 4:3. this one's resolution is 2266-by-1488 which is ~ 13.9:9 or 15.23:10. Assuming these numbers aren't 'cutting off' the rounded corners already
So it'll be a bit more height/less width compared to 16:10 (or more simply there would be some black bars at top and bottom)

  • +5

How is this a deal? iPads and Macs always cheaper on the education store? And you need a education email

    • +1

Not by this much at launch ($80/10.6% off for base spec)
e.g., base spec iPad Air is $899 normally, $829 on edu ($70/7.8% off for 1yr old product) or base spec new iPad is $499/$469 ($30/6% off)

      • Go to JB, as they have the EPP (Education) too. Just add the "HIM" and "HER", and "HOME" Gift Card that u could've bought at 15% off @ Coles b4 last Xmas and the 10% off one at Woolies b4 Xmas, and the last recent 10% off the cards @ Coles about 2 mths ago, that u can use @ JB. That'll add up the savings.

    • That's why there's too many bloody idiots on here who post such crap. They just want their time in the 'limelight'. You always need to have an education email to get the Education store pricing.

  • +1

At this price, pay a bit extra get the ipad air 4…

    • +6

IPad Mini has a better processor and it’s lighter.

      • Viewing experience is better on the air coz it’s bigger? I guess it depends on what u use it for

    • +1

But this is faster than iPad Air 4….

      • +1

Fair. What do you use on it? Casual use u won’t notice the difference.

        • Personally I have an iPad Air 3. I’m not going to upgrade as pretty happy with it. It feels pretty fast to me. But if I needed an iPad I would consider the mini for the size and the a15 means it would be supported for a long time.

        • I think it depends on how much RAM does each iPad has. If the new iPad Mini has 4GB (compare to 3GB on the Apple Air 4), it will perform much in Memory Intensive tasks.

    • -1

You don't really buy the mini because you are willing to put up with a physically larger/heavier device. The mini makes a pretty good all in one that you don't notice is in your backpack/handbag. The fact that they even bothered with the previous model of mini shows what people will put up with to get a device really comfortable to hold with one hand. It's basically not been very good 'value' if you can put up with a larger device since the cheap 'iPad' model was introduced.

      • 🤣🤣🤣… 🙄🤪

  • +2

The iPad 9 looks like a good upgrade too. $469 for 64gb and the chipset is an a13! I bought an iPad Air 3 last year which only has an A12. It also a better front camera than both the IPad air 3 and 4!
If you are up for a full sized iPad at that price point you would sacrifice having only a little more weight and not fully laminated screen.

  • The volume button placement is really bad 🙄

    • It's not as if it could go anywhere else, one side is basically entirely taken up by the pencil, the other long side will be on the desk / in the case spine, so that leaves the bottom short side or where they put it.

  • +4

Remember when Minis were like $400?

    • +4

They’ve moved from “entry” to “premium”.

Kills me though, I MUCH prefer this size.

    • +3

The Mini was a bargain. Apple products, in general, have got more expensive.

    • Foxconn charge more now.

  • nice price but will wait for newer ipad air as mini would be small for reading

    • +4

I’d say one things it’s perfect for is actually reading, each to their own though.

      • Same here, these are a bit bigger than a Kindle which I would consider the benchmark for reading devices.
Or you know, books. Which are smaller than the ipad mini

edit: looks like I was wrong, most of my books are about the size of ipad mini or slightly bigger

    • When is new air announcement??

      • Every 2.5-3 years‼️ So figure out when the last ipad Air was released.

  • +1

I’d recommend picking up a iPad Pro 10.5. Pro-motion and the required specs for the majority of users at a fraction of the price.

    • +1

I'm not sure I'd recommend the old iPads Pros with thick bezels/rounded shape but I think the 11" pro refurbs are a decent alternative when they get back in stock: https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/FU1M2X/A?fnode=368f0b7…

Upsides: ProMotion (120hz variable screen for smoother scrolling), larger size if that's your preference, more Apple keyboard options
Downsides: slower but in real life most likely not noticable, worse cameras, no centre stage (big feature for me who it a lot for Zoom)

      • This is more expensive

    • This is more expensive

  • +2

    Wifi+Cellular 256 seems to be $1089 not $1209?

Will this be the ongoing edu discount for the mini or does apple change this?

    • Of course it's $1089‼️ That's what it mentions/states - doesn't it⁉️🙄🥴

  • For anyone with a mini already, how is the form factor for note taking/quick sketches? I am looking at a device like this for meetings at work, but wasn't sure if it might be a bit small and the Air 4 would be a better investment for the extra screen real estate.

    • +2

I'd personally go bigger (air/pro 11) for work especially if you're going to do emails etc.
Note taking/sketches though would be great, it's about the size of my moleskine notebook (and with the new one, usable screen would be similar size to the page)

    • +1

I have the Mini and the latest iPad Air. I prefer the Air for note-taking as a uni student because I don’t need to zoom in so much to write comfortably. I use Notability to take notes and I like that it will automatically scroll as I write, but I’m more efficient on the Air. Also my palm rested more comfortably on the Air because more space - I don’t like writing when my palm isn’t on the same surface as the pen lol that’s just me (it’s why I hate spiral notebooks)

    • +2

      I have a ipad pro 11'' and a ipad mini 5.

I always pick up ipad mini (80% of time) when I'm at home for reddit, reading, youtube, games etc as it's so light and comfortable to hold.

But when I go to work, I enjoy my ipad pro as it's bigger to work on and easier to show clients the screen, not along it's faster.

Regarding note taking, being honest, I love taking notes on ipad mini than ipad pro. however, I don't take two ipads for work so ipad pro wins because it's a nice all-rounder.

    • If you’re using it on a desk/table almost all of the time, get the bigger device.

If you’re using it in bed / on public transport/ traveling/ carrying it everywhere consider the smaller one.

      • -2

Only common sense would tell one that. 🙄

  • -1

Ordered mini. Having access to the latest A15 performance at this price is good value I feel

    • +1

It is like buying a bigg"er" iPhone 13 Pro Max but with no voice calls, crappier camera system, no promotion but with Apple Pen support.

      • +1

more like buying a bigger iPhone non-pro, in terms of key specs.

I just don't need another phone and I am an Android user for that purpose.

Planning to play some games and use for occasional media consumption.

      • +3

Have you, actually, used an iPad Mini for any period of time?

      • You can buy roughly two of these for the same price as the pro max, depending on model…. Or an iPhone Mini 13 as well…. I expect the latter to be a fairly popular combination for people that don't like larger phones for most uses but still want larger screen real estate 'with them' most of the time, it's a much better solution if you also read ebooks etc.

Shame about the lack of pro-motion but that's more of a feature that you only really want after using.

  • +3

W T F at the price of the 256gb seriously… can have a very good spec touchscreen laptop with 2tb ssd. But then again comparing 🍎 with 🍌 so yeah… you can neg my comment away

    • +1

They didn't become the 1st $1,000,000,000,000 for being generous.

    • +1

Get the regular iPad 9, son.

  • iPad with Woolworths gift card via education store is ~$400 at 64gb. Mini is 50% pricy, insane world.

    • +3

You do get a much faster chip for the money, and nice little things like the better screen, USB C instead of crappy lightning etc

      • That's what you get comparing the iPad series but when you compare to the other tablets…

        • +3

…You get a sub par experience? Sorry but other tablets are crap to actually use. They do the job, but so does a depressed girlfriend.

          • -2

@BusMan247: So you're an expert on this, aye⁉️🤣😆..🥴🙄

        • +1

I'll always use Android phones but Android tablets are nearly all absolute crap, and I've tried a lot.

  • Does this mean ipad 8th gen is discontinued? I really wanted the gold in 128gb which I would’ve got for ~$525 with woolies apple gc promo. They wouldn’t have any left in apple stores I’m assuming? :(

Should I suck it up and get the ipad 9th gen in silver for either cheaper ~$400 or for more space ~$580? Or should I get the gold ipad 8th gen 128gb for $649 from jb, which is awaiting stock? Would jb discount it or unlikely?

I don’t really care too much about specs as I only want to use it to draw, download and watch shows, and use some apps.

    • Discontinued in Apple store unfortunately. JB hi-fi normally doesn't but OW might have special offers on clearance before Christmas for the old version if no hurry.

    • Just put a gold case onto the new iPad lol.The chip is an a13, faster than my iPad Air 3! It also means it will be supported for longer.

    • Definitely get the 9th gen at this price and base memory

    • 8th gen have been in heavy constraint for most of this year & no more new stock will be coming in of them due to this. You might be able to find a stray one but it’ll probably take a bit of hunting around. The stock JB is waiting on won’t be arriving as Apple has shifted production focus to the 9th gen.

      • Get a new one on either eBay or Amazon. That should help. They're are desperate ones out there, especially on eBay trying to flog one off.

  • It's so weird for me that the ipad mini has better specs than the normal ipad

    • +1

The iPad is the base model now, as they also target schools.

    • It was kind of weird that the 'normal' iPad was cheaper and better for most of the last 5+ years. People were really really attached to the size. The Air is the equivalent in larger size and will probably get a spec bump too, possibly unannounced. Really the successor to the original 'iPad' series became the Air when they introduced the cheap model, and the old premium 'Air' series had a successor in the Pro series.

  • Now I am confused should I update my ipad 2018 (9.7 inches) to ipad mini

    • +1

Your iPad it’s still pretty new! I have an iPad Air 3 and I’m keeping it. I really like the new iPad mini form factor, but I do feel that’s too much money spent on such a small tablet.

      • It's weird that I have a Pro but still find myself using my mini 2 because the size is so much more comfortable and holdable. I do miss when Apple made great protective cases like on the Mini 2, perfect little e-reader and holiday device. The mini has been a bit of a 'pay extra to get it smaller' device for a long time. It's one of the few places where that old trend still exists, I wish they'd put what fits of their top technology in smaller devices, the larger ones often compete with full desktops, while the smaller ones are just convenient to take everywhere.

  • +1

64gb is too less and 256 is Too much…..Damn apple
most apps for ipad are above 100mb size :(

Edit: order the 64GB Wifi (Delivery date 4/10), now have to sell off my iPad Air.

  • Is mini good for reading manga / comics?

    • I read lots of manga and IMO iPad mini is too small for most of manga.

For example, when I read Chainsaw Man or Attack on Titan, the words are very small on ipad mini so sometimes I need to zoom in. It rarely happened on my ipad pro.

      • +2

Interesting, I found that it's plenty readable for the Jump app (or Manga Rock back in the day). Is it as immersive as an air/pro? No, but I've never had to zoom unless it's a double pager
Total dimension of the old mini was around the size of tankubon/manga volumes of 5.04″ x 7.17″ or 5.83″ x 8.2″. In real use there was dead space of about 1cm on the left and right of each page due to aspect ratio
New mini's 'skinnier' screen should make a bigger difference than the 0.4" upsize would suggest

        • it's something you get used to I think. I've gone from a 2012 nexus 7, 2013 nexus 7 with nice res. Thought it broke so grabbed the 8" nvidia shield t1. Then mate heated up micro usb port a little and it charged perfectly again so I sold the shield. I have tried an old ipad and a galaxy tab s but I just light the weight and size so gave the ipad away and threw the samsung on ebay.

I recently spent some time setting up mums accounts (every time…) on her new ipad air so im not sure whether to give that a try or just go for a mini. I think either would work well but your description is definitely making the mini sound like it fits my use scenario better.

  • you could just use this as a big phone really.

    • Yes! I wondering if anyone is planning to do that? Like Ed Sherman. It’s cheaper than the iPhones. Calls won’t be received though, you would need to set up a voip maybe.

      • So this is ipod extra max?

      • +1

Pff who actually calls people on the phone these days?

        • -1

          Doctors, schools, prospective employers?

  • do I need edu email to access this price? or anyone can get edu price?

    • Apple will ask you provide evidence

      • +1

I’ve purchased from the EDU store about 10 times and never been asked, and never used an EDU email address to do it (I work in a school, and I’m a university student).

        • randomly they do ask the evidence as part of their audit process.

          • @lazydesi: Just get the item delivered then?

          • @lazydesi: It's not just randomly that they ask. It's randomly that they DON'T ask‼️ I personally know of Apple staff as well as students or ones that are working who do part time study and have bought Apple devices on the Education (EDU), have been mainly asked for proof or evidence that they are such.

    • I can ask my sister to buy for me as she is in university. But if it doesnt require edu email, I might as well use my personal email
