Apple iPad Mini 6 2021 WiFi 64GB $669 | WiFi 256GB & WiFi+Cell 64GB $879 | WiFi+Cell 256GB $1,089 Delivered @ Apple Edu Store

2260

Team, was browsing the edu store and noticed that the iPad mini is $80 off for the base model/$100 off 256GB etc etc.
Price on regular Apple Store/RRP in retailers is $749.

Pricing is for students, teachers etc

Perfect device for me and I'm sure many others - easy to use one handed because of size and weight but still very legible for comics/ books/video.

Don't forget to combine with Woolies for ~15% back in Woolies gift cards (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/650860) and possibly Shopback/Cashrewards for 1.5% cashback (not sure if it'll work with giftcard payments, but why not right)

Edit: usually new products aren't discounted (much) at launch in the edu store, so this is a bit rare to my knowledge

very tempted as im still using my good old ipad mini 2. though also considering the ipad pro 11inch at the same time ^^,

    • +1

Mini 2 was an awesome device, until relatively recently I only missed Touch ID and it was otherwise pretty perfect for travel. Loved the case Apple made for it too, good quality, slim and actually protected it from knocks from all angles instead of these new ones with exposed corners, as if no one ever throws them in a bag or drops them etc.

I ended up going to the pro 12.9 a couple of years ago but still find myself using my phone instead in situations where I used to use, and would prefer, the iPad mini. The bigger the device the nicer it is to use, but the more intent you need to use it.

      • Like someone said about the iPad Pro,… u can use it as a PC, and is best suited for desk situations. The mini is best just with one hand to browse and read on, and more portable use - especially for travelling. I'd rather use a MacBook Pro for PC purposes.

  • Need to stop browsing OzB. Almost bought this and then I realised that we already got spare iPads to use and I don't need to take this iPad mini with me for portable gaming.

    • Lol

    • -4

If u want portable gaming,… just play with yourself and use your phone for that, like many do when 'they're out & about.' If u really want gaming, download quiz ones so that u can gain knowledge, without your brain going dead. That's if u have a brain. Video games do nothing, unless you're a teen or younger. It's about time that such adults grew up.

      • Weird sentiment I havent heard for a while. im assuming joking or trolling but if not, there have been so many studies in the past 20+ years that look at brain health, life expectancy, demetia and anyithng else that got the studies funded. Quizzes, crosswords and other traditional thinking games usually had benefits in the range of placebos. Games required more dynamic thought and more varied active areas of the brain so tended to provide much more benefit as a preventative for alzheimers and dementia. Neither helped to much without exercise though.

        Nice troll post anyway .

        • -1

Funny one, aye. Most that you'll find who play games on their devices are ones who play video games, fool. You only have to look around and then getting off on such, by making sounds. These ones never use common sense, and want to protect their own senses in doing so, to vote down and play down such. Because they get hurt by such. Now that's FACT‼️

  • -3

No idea why they keeping the iPad with the old design. The new flat squarish edge looks heaps better …why not adopt it?
And the Screen edge bezel……seriously wtf. Make them smaller for God sake. I know it's the cheapest version, but surely it can get a facelift

    • I imagine the bulk of their sales are for schools and children who don’t usually care what they look like.

    • Old design = old accessories all fit.

      • But USB C means universal

        • True and FACT‼️ 👍

    • Its a POS base model. Why would they update it to make it look good and make the higher end ipads look less desirable. That would not be a clever business plan.

    • The squarish edges, especially in the tablets helps to charge the Apple Pen. That's why it was designed for. It's not because it looks better… being from your point of view.

  • +4

I didn’t get the attraction to the iPad mini form factor until I had a customer show me it was perfect size for her handbag. That made a lot of sense.

  • Brought mine this morning without gift card then cancelled it and buy it again, thank you

    • -1

      Thanks Bragger‼️🥴🙄

  • how to prove my eligibity to purchase this?

    • You don’t, they might ask you to upload your student card later on

      • +1

They are doing it for 80% of orders and almost all first time ones these days.

        • What happens if you don’t provide the details? Return the device ?

          • +1

@hopper: They will audit BEFORE they send it.
if it gets sent and you were not asked to verify you are all good

        • What makes you say this?

          • +1

@scrappydoo: I have been audited myself and it was prior to despatch

Friends daughter works for apple and this is literally her job, they have stepped up Education Auditing since around March 2021
They are apparently going to use some online verification system soon similar to what some of the Teleco's use etc

            • @jimbobaus: Thx for the heads up. For parents buying for their kids, any idea what kind of evidence or proof is required?? Not sure primary kids get issued student ID cards?

              • +1

@julz15: if they ask… proof of enrollment is enough i believe

  • Thanks OP! Have added 8 $100 gift cards one time to checkout XD

  • +1

They are verifying orders these days.
    Just make sure you qualify.

    • +1

Does my son who is in prep qualify?

      • He sure does :)

    • What kind of information will be required? Is a physical Student ID enough or do you need to have a .edu email ready as well?

    • +1

They've been verifying orders for at least a good 12-18mths. That's a definite sure thing‼️👍

  • Is it worth upgrading from iPad mini 5? My usual usage is reading books on Kindle app or some PDFs.

    • -1

      I'd say no

    • It's completely redesigned and the latest A15 chipset, so if you use it a lot, I would say yes.

    • Nah save your money unless it's actually getting too slow imo

    • +1

For kindle probably no real difference, for pdf it might actually be worse as it’s a slightly lower number of pixels and screen width on the short edge.

The new one will be better for media as it’s taller (or wider in landscape, so 16:9 video will be 10-11% larger.

      • IPad 5 mini has an A12 chipset, same as IPad Air 3 and IPhone XR. I own an iPad Air 3 and we have iPhones XR in the family and they are very fast. For your usage the new ipad mini it’s a waste. But hey if you want the latest gadget go for it!

      • Ipad Mini 5: 2048-by-1536 resolution at 326 pixels per inch (ppi)

Ipad Mini 6: 2266-by-1488 resolution at 326 pixels per inch (ppi)

Seems it has the exact same number of pixels

        • +1

1536px reduction to 1488px will make a difference for pdf shaped content that doesn't adjust to width (but no difference for ebooks formats that do). While 2266 vs 2048 will make a difference for 16:9 content as that was the constraining dimension.

So yeah, no difference for things that require raw pixels rather than a particular aspect ratio. Actually kind of disappointing the side bezels are actually bigger. Although the pixel count is likely not including those cut off by the rounded corners, so likely less total pixels, albeit the loss of ones that won't make that much difference for most uses.

Both 326 ppi means the resolution likely translates between them to actual physical dimensions of the screen, so you get a narrower taller screen with the new one. Actually kinda sucks for still photography / standard PDFs. Though you're getting 94% of the size for those uses in order to get 110.5% ish for 16:9 video.

Personally I was kind of hoping for the same physical dimensions and width / side bezels with just whatever more height they could give as I found the width previously absolutely perfect, just a touch small (but perfectly manageable) for video, especially wider formats than 16:9. Good the physical width is bigger, but the wider side bezels which seem to be a design choice rather than a technical choice are a let down I didn't see anyone mention yet.

    • I'd say yes

If you wanna use your Apple Account Balance and have a friend who’s eligible for education pricing, is it possible to change the recipient name to her and have it still send to me? Then if they ask for eligibility she can provide her student ID? Apple won’t (or can’t) ask for her residential address? Or it has to ship to her? As far as I know you can’t transfer Apple Account Balance to anyone. Thank you.

    • +1

I don’t think it would be a problem tbh. Just make sure she doesn’t keep it lol

  • has a15
can be configured with 5g, cellular
    ???
just buy this and use as a massive phone lol

With Woolies 15%, can anyone please explain if the following will work to buy Macbook Air 512gb from Education Store which is $1699.

    1. Buy Apple Giftcards worth $1700 from Woolies & get 15% Woolworths Rewards worth $255.
    2. Then Load the Apple Giftcards into my Apple Account.
    3. Go to Apple Education Store using my Apple Account to buy using my Apple Balance.
    4. Use $255 Woolies Rewards for groceries whenever I need.

For the Education Store, can I just purchase using my Existing Apple Account or do I need a new one with some student details or at any stage will I require any student details to claim the education store price? Or they don't care about that at all when we buy online?

    Thank you

    • +4

Skip 2 and just use the gift cards when you buy the macbook. Risk of adding it into your account first is if you change your mind, you won’t be able to take it out or sell it.

Gift cards already redeemed in your account can’t be used in Apple store either

      • I am bit confused, so once gift card are uploaded to your account you can't use it to purchase things ?

        • I think you can buy but only via ordering online. So if you order online and pick it up you are fine. Also if you can wait I would wait until January when they’ll throw in apple AirPods for free. Buy cards now and wait until then (that’s what I did)

          • @fozzie: Aah thanks for that, you really think they'd throw in airpods for free ?

            • +1

@RobotWizard: I got them last year, it happens every year mate (just do a search). Two years ago was beats, even better.

            • @RobotWizard: The free Airpods promo is generally for 'back-2-school / college (uni/Tafe)' offers. They generally come out in the last 10 days of January each year, of what I've seen. Normally offered on only MacBooks (Pros and Airs), as well as iMacs. But they don't offer the student discounts.

  • Really stuck between buying this or iPad Air, Want to get it as a gift for my mum who will mostly use it for work trainings etc and at home watching youtube videos, if someone has both can you share your experience and which one you'd recommend ?

    • +1

On a desk bigger screen sizes are king, Holding it up the lighter weight and smaller size is easier to manage. Some people get the mini because it fits in their handbag, but then I do know people that manage to squeeze a Pro 11 with bulky case into their handbag… That might be of no help, it's a hard decision without knowing the proportion of use cases. Things like text eBooks are the only place where I think the mini wins without a doubt for most people. (Technical PDFs with diagrams etc are usually better on bigger screens).

The Air will probably be refreshed once they feel they have enough supply of the A15 chip to get wait times on these devices down to standard. Not that it matters that much for most use cases, just more future proof. There's every chance an Air refresh will just pop up without a release event since it wouldn't be a major update.

      • I actually recently bought her 12.9 1st gen pro to get used to IOS and she finds it easy to use apart from screen size which she finds is too big, I am bit hesitant to go mini because that's completely opposite of what she's currently using.

Her main usage is doing online trainings and youtube mostly

        • +1

The 1st gen 12.9 was a monster, the newer one is better, but still big enough that you need to intentionally use it. If she's keeping the 12.9 then in my mind the mini might become a better option since if it's too small for a particular task there's always the option to switch.

        • What about the Pro 11? That is what I have.

  • Spoke with TA

Just ordered 64G wifi+cellular. So it works out to be almost 25% off RRP, that pretty good for a newly launched product!

  • +1

Noob question How do I get the Wollies gift cards ?

  • +1

Looks like the Apple Store is temporarily closed ?
    On Apple website:
The weekend’s almost here. And so is pre-order.
Won’t be long now. Pre-order begins at 10:00 pm AEST.

Will try to check out my cart at 10pm tonight.

  • If I get it delivered, what kind of audit/verification will Apple ask for? As opposed to getting it picked up in-store? Just trying to figure out how I can get this discount (no longer a student, but have a valid Student ID card)

    • They will ask you to upload the student ID which you have it so you’d be fine.

  • I missed the Woolworths Gifts Card promotion to get extra ~15% off. What would be the next best strategy? Just wait for that Woolies card promo to come back? What are the chances you reckon?

  • Just got notification that it's shipped, added engraving option.

    • did they check your edu credentials?

      • Not yet

  • Anyone ended up receiving theirs? I ordered mine week ago and been stuck at arriving 24/09 but hasn't been shipped, I checked this morning and now saying Arrives 07/10/2021 - 12/10/2021

I'll try and see if I can pick it up rather than waiting that long.

    • Mine has been pushed back till the end of October it seems :(

    • Anyone ended up receiving theirs?

Yes. But I ordered at 7:30 a.m. the day of the announcement. 256GB WiFi + Cellular in Space Gray.

Bought via Education Store for the first time, but didn't have to verify as I used an edu.au e-mail for my shipping update (university staff)

      • What do you think of it?

        • The Smart Folio is a rip at $95 (as someone who bought one). Get a different case. But the iPad mini definitely flies compared to my old iPad mini 4! Things load faster (some apps crash though; looking at you Westpac)

          • @kerfuffle: How does the screen compare. Do you like the extra realestate? I have a mini 4, as well, still going strong. However, I mostly use my Pro 11” because of the full screen.

            • @try2bhelpful: Long story short: it's better than the iPad Mini 4. If I didn't like the extra real estate, I wouldn't have upgraded …

              • @kerfuffle: True Dat.

Maybe I should’ve worded it as “do you think the extra realestate was worth the money?”.

                • @try2bhelpful: If I didn't, I wouldn't have bought it …

                • @try2bhelpful: I will update you once I receive mine, I get what you trying to say, even after purchasing I am still thinking if it was the right decision or not, screen might be bit too small but lets wait and see :)

                  • @RobotWizard: Thanks. I look forward to it.

I will be happy when we get out of lockdown to go look at one in person. The main reason I went across to the Pro 11” was the full screen. I find the button annoying. It makes the footprint too big for the screen realestate you get. The problem with the 11” is it is awkward to stick it into my bag. The mini tucked in nicely, including into small sling bags. It worked well for travelling.

                    • @try2bhelpful: Just received mine an hour ago and absolutely no regrets, I've got iPad 7th Gen, iPad Pro 1st gen 12.9 and this. So comparing all this is by far the best in terms of screen quality and portability, its so small and light yet such a good quality product, Me personally I am very happy with the purchase, not having button and chin like normal iPad definitely gives it that premium look :)

                      • @RobotWizard: Thanks for the update. I’m getting excited about having a good look at this. It will be hard to justify given my iPad Pro 11, and existing mini 4. but I might be able to talk myself into it. Enjoy.

          • @kerfuffle: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣..🤡

    • Update: Got a message on 24th night saying it has been shipped now from Sydney warehosue, so can safely ignore the dates, hopefully should be here in next few days, Canberra store has no stock for the one I wanted.

  • I wish there was a 128gb version. I only use like 5 apps but I still am paranoid about a 64gb ipad

    • Just go ahead and get the 64gb, if u really want the device.

    • There is a 256gb version

      • I don't think that they want the 256gb version. As they might think that it has too much memory.

  • Is there any way to get these discounts for high school students? My daughter is in year 10. Looking at the store, they seem to require the student be at a university.

    • As far as I know it should be available for students K-12 as well

      https://www.apple.com/au/education/k12/

The store should be accessible from there

      • Unfortunately, that page only says to visit a store or go online (with a link to the normal retail pricing store).

  • got it delivered this mrng.

  • Perfect, and available for pick up in any colour other than purple!

  • I'm returning my iPad mini 6 back because there is a jelly scroll effect, head ups!

    https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/pw24ev/new_ipad_mini…

    • +1

Are you really noticing it in day to day use? If I try to replicate it, it does happen but doesn’t affect my day to day life.
Everything else has been amazing, especially the centre stage feature

      • Yes, I got my iPad mini 6 256gb + cellular purple for the use of tons of resourceful offline ebooks & safari web. I noticed this when I’m casually scrolling fast or slow in portrait mode the screen goes wonky, not acceptable at $1,100. Now the refund is going back to my Apple ID which sucks but then I’ll wait for the iPad mini 7 for a hardware issue fix and also might have better deep colour options if that’s another 2 years later, my money won’t age by the time we’re out of lockdown and living life.. the iPad mini 6 will get old by then.

        • +1

In all honesty once you see these things you can’t unsee them. If it bothers you then you should return it. If Apple fixes the issue you can rebuy it or, as you said, next years version. It is the advantage of buying from Apple or Costco, if you don’t like it you can send it back.

          • @try2bhelpful: It’s like opening your third eye, I got a courier coming to pick it up, apple acknowledges it and says it’s normal but to a degree I agree with them but on mini 6 lcd screen is very noticeable and looks like my screen is melting 😂
Shame, love the concept but they didn’t nail it 110% for a premium brand.
There’s rumours where people saying iOS 15.1 fixes it but then ifixit said it’s a hardware issue and there’s some people say that I just got the bad apple. Who knows.
Good thing I can return it and keep my eye on the news and then repurchase it!

            • @Alp3r: Yup. That is my view as well. If you aren’t satisfied then send it back. If they do fix it then you can repurchase it. Even if it is a hardware issue they might be able to “retweak” it in software to reduce the effect. I, actually, returned an iPad once because it wasn’t what I wanted. I bought one a couple of years later when they hit the mark.
