          Probably if not gaming just for browsing / scrolling then… Perhaps not worth it. Depends on user…

          The integrated APU (Vega 8) is still capable of some light /low gaming especially on older or esport style titles though…

        120 or 144hz is a huge quality of life improvement over 60hz

        once you go high frequency there's no going back

        and to those worried about battery life, you can always run it at 60hz in windows settings if you need extra hour or so

          Well said especially when the technology is adapting to higher refresh rate. Once you scroll which you are doing all the time you can actually feel slow in 60 hz. There is no going back at least for me

        I have been using it plugged in generally but the battery life seems decent, I want to say 8 hours with general browsing and some videos without battery saver or anything on. I ran a lot of cookie clicker on it too and it had closer to 6 with that. I ordered on July 23rd and it was in my hand around Sept 3rd, so roughly 6 weeks. The estimated was for November but it updated right before it shipped to mid Sept.

        The full spec, 5800H, 3050 and 120hz was 1470. I also bought a year extended warranty with on site servicing for $70 for a total of $1540.

      do you mind if I ask if you have any temperature problems?

      I have an old Toshiba i7(2nd Gen) + GeFore GT 540M with 8GB RAM that overheats and shuts down during Zoom meetings!

      I've been reluctant to buy a powerful laptop ever since.
      Sure, after almost ten years, I still use it and right now it could use a clean up and fresh thermal paste, but it's always been a disappointment - it struggles with photo editing, it's never been able to play games without shutting down quite quickly - most taxing things tried were Football Manager and, recently, Roblox. (although I've just today discovered that maybe I need to manually configure programs to run use the graphics card not the integrated graphics!).
      Still, when the ambient temps get above mid-20s, BSOD is a constant worry.

      Have you tried any taxing activities?
      How does it fare?
      And do you use any additional cooling methods / air con etc?

      And how does text look for office work - not on the small side?

        Just buy PS5 or Xbox separately

          seriously? did peoples' muscles somehow deteriorate to the point of not being able to carry around 1.9kgs over the lockdowns??
          just a year or two ago, this is what all 60Hz FHD 15.6" laptops with no dGPUs weighed.. a measly 671 square centimetres

          The way I see it, for an extra 100grams, not only am I getting 742 square centimetres + a dedicated (albeit, pretty average) GPU
          I'm getting WQHD 2560 × 1440 = 3686400 @ 120Hz = 442Million (glorious 350nit) pixels/sec blasted at my face

          no choice-supportive bias here..

    It’s a great deal for someone that doesn’t want to have dedicated GPU. Previously they were charging $350 for rtx 3050 and now it’s $850.

    Any reviews on IdeaPad 5 Pro 14ITL6 ( https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/austudentbeans/au/en/austudentb… ) ??? After upgrading the memory to 16GB Soldered DDR4-3200 and using code, it comes down to $1182 from $1594.

    Just looking for general home use, no gaming, probably bit of software programming. Happy for alternate recommendations if any out there.

          The main difference is the screen size, 13.3 inch and 16 inch are different animals altogether, in terms of whether upgrading to 120hz and the 3050 would make much difference, for gaming you'll notice the difference if you push above 60 frames, and for things like browsing you'll notice a slight bump in smoothness. Decide whether you want a 13.3 or 16 inch laptop and there's your answer!

          I went full fat for the Ryzen 9 (partly to get 32GB RAM, otherwise not much benefit of the Ryzen 7, RTX 3050, 120Hz Display but only 512GB SSD (as the $400 jump to 1TB is just nuts) But if you don't need 32GB the Ryzen 7 is plenty enough. Typing this on a Lenovo Ryzen 7 4800U.

    Bought it from the last deal with maxed out specs to 32ram and 5900hx. Once I took it out of the box I realized it's way too heavy for portability. It's a workstation laptop to replace your PC.

        Not having a Sim card slot is a deal breaker. I don't want to connect it to my mobile as I am on a basic phone plan without much data. But I want to get a dedicated sim data plan for the laptop as I know I'll be using data on the laptop

          Don't think sim cards are common amongst laptops unless maybe more business orientated laptops might have em.

          If you really don't want to connect to your phones hotspot, you can probably get a usb modem where you can insert your sim card that way. There are also portable dedicated battery hotspots

          I was given a HP EliteBook 840 G5 for work and it has a SIM slot. I haven't tried it but I read that it'll do 4G. The newer G6 also had SIM slots.

          I can recommend the Elitebooks, although the matte display on mine is really dim in sunlight. Not great for outdoor use. Super sturdy build though

    Ordered a Thinkpad P14s Gen 2 for delivery early October yesterday on the edu store with the EDUCOMM code. EDU Store Link

    Ryzen Pro 5850U
    Windows 10 Pro

    512GB SSD
    3 Year Premier Support (you couldn't downgrade the support on this model, it's included effectively as standard)
    300nits 14" FHD IPS screen

    For a total of $1583.10.

    Unfortunately the base config can't be configured (yet) as it's a new release. But it's a decent base config. Interestingly the 5650U version (same other specs) is $30 for an end of Sept ship date.

    If you're interested in something more Thinkpady (albeit with a shittier screen), this is an absolute cracker of a deal. I have a secondary BenQ PD2700U for all my delicious colour accurate workflow so this suited well. Upgrading from an X250, so this should be a nice little update.

    The T14 Gen 2 is basically the same model (apart from not having the same ISV certified drivers like the P series which is super useful for CAD), but once you spec it out with all the extras above, it comes out to be quite a bit more, although you can upgrade the screen on it instead. So basically take a look and see where your priorities lay. Tacking on the same warranty and CPU (and RAM) to the base T14 Gen 2 brings it to about $50 more than the P14s Gen 2 (or with standard 1yr warranty $155 cheaper), but you only get 256GB SSD and Windows Home with this config on the T14 for that sort of price (you can upgrade further but $$). If you are planning to upgrade those to something else, this could be an option as well for some.

        A note for others, the T14s has a single heatpipe, whereas the regular T14 has a dual heatpipe (but smaller battery). The P14s/15s both have dual heatpipes, so it shouldn't be the cooling solution on those. What Intel CPU did you get?

      Don't think its worth the asking price right now, about $1389 for a 5600H/16GB/RTX 3050/60Hz panel or $1569 for a 5800H/16GB/RTX 3050/120Hz panel.

      The Dell G15 5515 with a 5600H/8GB(user upgrade-able RAM)/RTX 3050/120Hz panel has been on sale for $899 before and despite the 5515 120Hz display being a turd, I don't think this is worth nearly $450 more (about $100 to upgrade to a 120hz panel with Lenovo vs paying $50 for a 8GB stick of RAM).

      The 3050 here is only 35 Watts. I think that's the lowest powered variety. I don't think there'd be that much difference to 1650. A higher powered 3050, say 80 Watts beats it by 35% maybe.
