Unity 3D Game Development Tools with iOS and Android Tool Kits FOR FREE

1070

This game engine was used to develop some very popular games of late (http://unity3d.com/gallery/made-with-unity/game-list) including Blood and Glory, Jelly Defence, ShadowGun, Battleheart and Muffin Knight.

I think the basic Windows dev tools are always free but till 8th April so are the IOS and Android dev kits.

Speak of the devil, I was looking at buying the android one a couple of days ago, and I've been fiddling around in unity for the past hour or so. Bargain of the year so far for me!

    • Limited features but its ok, for building 2d game

    • Do you remember how much it is usually then?

      • +1

The iOS and Android licences are usually (US)$400 each

  • Nice find OP. +1 from me.

    • ^ This. +1 from me too.

    • It might be free now, but I think the developer intends to resume charging for it again in the future, so it's probably best not to share the serials in public. (The serials are unique and tied to your account, rather than being one common serial for everyone.)

Edit: Sorry, I shouldn't have replied directly to your comment, to allow you to edit it… guess a mod might have to intervene.

    • Our's is different… & we got only -one- ser no. …?

      How large was/were the download(s)?

      • I bought one version at a time and got 2 diff serial..
        Ios was just ova 900mb

      • I kept adding the same free items to the cart (which kept showing 1 item) and 6 serial keys were sent in one email.

  • Great find… Mattwilko aren't the serials tied to your account? Plus there is Internet activation as well.

  • Trying to register an account to get my own serials but they don't seem to want to send me my activation email. Anyone else had trouble registering?

    • Check your spam folder if anything
I got mine straight away after clicking through the cart

    • I had problems using there site. The emails came through after 15mins+ and there site is very very slow?

  • So, is this a cross-platform SDK

(Run it on PC &/or Mac,
to make programs for Android, etc.)?

(Are -both- a PC -and- a Mac needed,
or just one of thesem as well as
    the target system(s)?)

    • You need to be running it on a mac to publish the game for iOS.

      • Thanks.

And can we "make" (or whatever) the Android program,
ie, without needing to push it up to the Market?

Eg, how to hand it to our Android phone, tab, etc.?

    • +1

The editor has both Windows and Mac versions, and you can create web, standalone and Android projects on both PC and Mac; I believe you can create Mac standalone clients on Windows too. iOS authoring specifically requires a Mac, though.

  • LOVE THIS

  • So, are there libraries for native Android / iOS device access (eg, GPS for location, waiting SMS, etc.)?

  • Awesome, thanks OP. A friend and I have been looking for cross platform engines for a month or two without really finding what we were looking for, and unity looks perfect, plus free :)

  • So, this version is fully legal? As in, I could make something with it, sell it and keep all the profit legally?

    • As far as I know it is a full license.

"Can we sell games and make money with the free version of Unity?

Yes! You certainly can— and without royalties nor paying any revenue share! If your game is a commercial success, we hope you'll upgrade to Unity Pro! :)"

    • As long as you're not developing for a company that has a annual turnover of over 100k a year, or alternatively not working for a educational institute with a annual budget of over 100k.

It also is missing a few features of the full version:
      http://unity3d.com/unity/licenses

Still, awesome deal to get started.

  • Excellent, I really wanted it from months ago but the $400 put me off. However I have a feeling they are about to release a new version that is way better :) but still can't beat it. Thanks leemako.

BTW guys I registered the the android and IOS version and got only one serial code. Can I use this same code on my mac for the ios version and windows pc for android version.

Glad to bring it to every ones attention, hope there are a few talented people out there inspired enough to make their own Indie titles - ive always been one to have the great ideas but no coding skills :( .

I love how gaming has become a lot like the film industry now, because in part to tools like this fast tracking the process - the smaller crews with big ideas can release some art house awesome which is more inspired than the EA Big Game 2012 crap out there. Big love to the Indie devs out there.

I'm a developer and I don't think it's so much due to tools like this, but more so the market places like iTunes, Android Market and Steam. Previously there was basically no way for indie devs to get a publisher to handle payment, hosting, and advertising.

Another big problem (that still is a problem) for someone like myself is knowing people with artistic talent to do graphics & music for you.

      • Your very right, the way we distribute media and reach the target audience is the real reason for Indie progress. I guess tools like this can help to ease that learning curve for those just starting out as developers. I still wouldnt know where to start with making a game but will have a play about with Unity any way.

  • leemako I love you!! This just saved me $800! Deal of the year imo!

Question, if I register for the key and install the software AFTER the free period, will I have to pay for it?

    • No, the key is what dictates your licenses and it is not a specific installer.

  • +1

    Software error:

    at /var/www/localhost/htdocs/download.cgi line 23.

    cannot download Mac version. :(

  • +1

Hehe, I'm glad I linked you to this leemako, seems the people at large appreciate the savings also! I have installed, registered and activated on PC and all working lovely jubblies.

I cannot comment on whether the licence will still work after the free period. I presume what you are getting here is a permanent licence to use and publish apps for Android / iOs (as if you actually bought the software to do that) and that this licence will be good for the life of the product (or as long as their activation servers still accept your serials)

Anyway I got the deal from an online Game Dev group which had promoted it. Glad to share the love!

  • Seems their servers are being hammered at this stage as I can't even activate over the internet.

    Really amazing deal
Anyone want to make an iOS game? I'm a sprite artist myself

    • +1

Maybe! got a link or email?

    • Should publish it on Android too, I mean you have the license :P No changes needed either.

  • Unreal! Been toying with the idea of buying this for ages. Thanks so much.

    • +4

      Not Unreal, Unity.

  • +3

If you have (or might get at some point) a team, be sure to "buy" 4 copies of everything :)

  • 1 word…. !!!Legendary!!!

  • Thanks!
