Smr; to save people the google.

  • this any good for NVR camera system?

    • No.

  • This any good with computers? I would like to upgrade my hd space.

    • Yeah SMR good for storage/archive. Google SMR vs CMR if you want explanations.

      • Ok I'm not a techy person. From what I think I gathered is that SMR is good if I wanna store movies and stuff but if I'm constantly going to be moving stuff around then CMR is better? My husband does dl a lot and transfer it to portables, not sure if that's considered heavy usage

        • Yep. The big weakness of SMR is continuous writing of high speed files, especially big files. So downloading, storing and reading off it to move elsewhere is all fine.

The 6TB for $177 seems the better deal no? 4TB drives available for $99 from officeworks etc but 6TB drives are $219.

    • Thanks, that’s the lowest price for 6tb in quite a while

  • Is this ok for NAS use?

    • No, look for CMR.

  • I swear blue used to be cmr drives. I have one oldish blue that's cmr anyway.

They used to be, not anymore. The old 4TB Blue (WD40EZRZ) is CMR, but finding them brand new nowadays isn't easy, I'd imagine.

      • Yeah that's what I have (WD40EZRZ) 2 of them not one and still going strong.

  • differences between NAS drives and archive drives is time between last accessed and parking the heads to save energy, NAS drives wait longer before parking heads as they expect to see data, other drives park the heads earlier to save power and wind down. if you use an archive drive for NAS you wear the heads out quicker , has a WD green fail, looked at the stats and i had exceeded the specs for head parking as it was used for storing torrents ….. spinning up and moving head to save chunks of data then parking again ……. should have used a NAS drive which i do now …… and just have an archive drive for back-up ……

    • Its a WD drive, these are all user settable options with wdidle.

  • It's showing $139 for me.

  • Blah blah blah difference between CMR and SMR
