For those that weren't aware (as I wasn't until just recently), Red Island is a brand of Cobram Estate
    https://www.cobramestateolives.com.au/our-brands/

    • +5

if i remember correctly - the cobram brand is made from olives cobram grows - the red island is made from olives cobram buys from other growers

      • +1

So is Cobram Estate worth the extra money? It's almost double the price of Red River

        • +5

they're both about the same price when they are on sale - at the moment cobram isnt on sale whereas red island is

        • +1

FYI this week's specials at Woolies (VIC at least) include Cobram 3L tin for $36 ($9 saving)
It regularly goes on discount at Coles too, sometimes the smaller bottles are cheaper per L than the tins.

We've been using Cobram for 2 years now, it really is worth the extra dollars plus, we only need 2 or 3 tins a year.

It should also be noted that both brands are the top two performers in choices test with
cobram having a score of 85% and the red island having a score of 79%.

Cobram tastes better. Like a tier above.

  • Amazing tasting EVOO, thanks for posting.

  • Also at coles

    • says in the post ;)

      • Not many people read description like me 😝

  • what is the best brand for Extra Virgin?

    • +2

      cobram estate IMHO

How do you find Aussie olive oils eg. like Cobram Estate, compared with popular and cheaper European brands, like Monini or La Espanola?

I'm not an expert, I'm usually torn between less expensive vs less miles the bottles make, but at the end of the day, I couldn't tell one from another.

        • +2

I do like Monini, RI is similar in taste and aroma I find.

        • +2

Choice magazine did a test a few years ago. La Espanola was not bad, but markedly lower than Cobram/Red Island. The top 5 were Australian, with the sixth being Always Fresh (Spain). The only poor Australian ones down the list were Coles Extra Virign and The Olive Tree (Aldi) Australian Extra Virgin.

I wouldn't trust the European brands. So many substitute canola instead, as shown in the 4 Corners report recently.

I just buy Australian EVOO from reputable groves, supports local and tastes great.

          • @Bozman: Saw that report as well. Worse ingredients than Canola in some cases.
I thought there was something strange about the euro oils - they don't seem to cook as well as Australian oil. Have only used them when I needed bulk oil but won't bother anymore.
I always try to buy Australia/New Zealand in any product.

        • We used to buy Espanola but once Cobram started appearing on Coles shelves we gave it a try (that was when it retailed $36 and went on special at $29ish).

As others have said here, the critical reviews have shown Red Island rates a little lower than Cobram, but we've adjusted to the increased price by waiting for the discounted sales - fairly regular between Coles and Woolies.

        • +1

EVOO's don't have a long shelf life either, so by the time the Euro stuff gets shipped across to Australia most likely it's already rancid, though of course unless you know your oils you wont be able to tell.

And the Italians and Spaniards have had a very long time to learn how to adulterate and cut down their oils, so much so that they've got it down to an art form.

Hence imo it's easier to trust the local farmers.

Have people compared this to Woolies' Organic blend? Thoughts?

  • Good size even though a little more expensive than the 1L for $9 when it's on sale. Apparently it's recommended to always use olive oil within 4-6 weeks from the date of opening.

    • +1

But like many sensitive things, you can store it in the fridge for greater longevity.

      • +2

Note that EVOO will thicken/solidify at low temperatures!

        • +2

And thin again at room temp. Someone could portion into smaller bottles if they really wanted to go to that effort.

  • This is good oil

  • +1

    It is really good stuff

This is delicious oil. I was going to put it up myself at some point, just to recommend it.
I thought it was part of one farm, and they really took care of the soil or something, but as said above it's a part of the Cobram Estate bigger brand or something, I dont know what that means then :/

  • Thanks, this is one of our favourites. For those with prime who don’t want to leave there house for this, it’s even cheaper per ml atm on amazon for the big bottle at $9 for a litre https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00JM18EUG?psc=1&smid=ANEGB3WVE…
