Most definitely not the best it has ever been but price has been bouncing around since the 268 Amazon deal blew up. Was $399 most places until yesterday but has shot back up across the board: 439 at OW, 499 at HN, 499 at JB. Worth keeping an eye out to see if any follow suit. In the meantime just think of the difference as a little donation to fund Bezos' rootin', tootin', union shootin' space cowboy adventures.

so its effectively tablet or smartphone architecture in a 2 in 1 format

    • +1

Smartphones are relatively powerful these days though and Chrome OS isn't demanding to run

New Duet model comes out next month with 13" screen and better specs. Also double the price..

    • +2

The Duet originally launch for $299US/$599AU.

Hopefully they don't do that again.

    • +1

I love my Duet and considered buying the new one until reading that it's only a 1080p screen. Maybe fine if it's going to be essentially a laptop, but that density is too low for me as a tablet - at least not going to be worth the price premium for me.

    • I've read it's the Duet 5 and will go on sale in October starting from US$429.

  • +1

more useful than an Android tablet and very good battery life. I use mine from previous deal pretty regularly.
I'd give this deal a tick if it was under $300 like before.

    • +3

OW agreed to price beat for 303, so pretty close!

      • did you go in store or call up from a price beat? and did you use amazon or bing lee advertised price?

        • +2

In store, Amazon price. OW site says no price matching on code discounts so Amazon was cheaper than the Bing Lee price delivered. I only showed them the Amazon price though.

        • +1

I just called them and did it that way. They put one aside for me and I can pick it up tomorrow. Any change in amazon price will not affect the quote I was given

Never understood what makes these Chromebooks significantly better than a tablet? Should have the same functionality and app support?

      • Apparently the browser experience on Chrome OS is much superior to android. That with touch screen and a keyboard is what made me buy this. I don't think there is anything better in this price range

  • purchased at last Amazon $298 deal. Very happy with the products.

It took times to get used to chromebook tho..my one need to plug directly to the wall to be charged..

  • Compared to android tablets around the same price I think this is a great deal

  • Wanted a lightweight device for my commute at a good price point.
Used a few Amazon gift cards (one for adding a Mastercard Debt card to Amazon for $20 etc) so was happy with that.

  • How decent is this for Zoom meetings? 2MP camera sounds a bit poor, what about the wifi reach? Does it have good enough range

  • Fantastic device and is great for web surfing, video conferencing and consuming media.

why i feel mine is sluggish? maybe we cant install too many apps from google store ?
sometimes need to press few times to open any app

    • Exactly my experience. I had the Samsung Tab S2 with 3GB RAM before this and that worked flawless but with this I find it a bit sluggish especially when there are a few apps open. I have to close the apps to get it back working. I think Chrome OS doesn't seem to manage the background tasks same as Android so it chews up more RAM in my experience. If you are happy with Android tablet and more used to that interface I would stick with that, I wouldn't move to Chrome OS unless your main use case is webpage browsing in Chrome. There are some really good deals on Android tablets lately.

      • ChromeOS manages background tasks better than Android if web browsing, doing things from websites and web apps (PWAs) are your thing.

It's when getting a Chromebook to do Android apps that it is slower than Android natively doing it.

    • Nothing wrong with you. Duet just lagging, slow and poor performance tabled with lots of bugs. Like using 5 old Chinese tablet, same experience

      • But so many saying theirs is fast?

        • They probably upgraded from their 2004 Asus laptop

        • Fast for what ? Maybe for installation updates for chrome os. But its happening almost every day

  • I assume this needs a hard surface to sit on? That the hinge can't support the screen on it's own?

    • It can. It's rigid similar to a surface tablet

    Great bang for buck

    • +1

if you have the buck you can always get a great bang

  • +1

The 7 year software updates on this is really important to me - an older Galaxy tab a in our house can't update the Facebook app and the version installed doesn't load. I keep my tablet longer than my phone (usually a victim of dropping), so this was the biggest factor for me.

I mainly use it as a tablet for browsing, ebooks, social media and YouTube so couldn't justify the price of an iPad, especially with limited storage (a mysterious 'Other' that doesn't go away after factory reset and deleting apps). After trying other tablets at JB, I think this has great performance. Thanks to software support, desktop chrome and the keyboard, you can use this duet for more and for longer than comparable (<$400) tablets.

First thing you should do (if you use it as a tablet)is download an extension- user agent switcher - so it loads mobile view by default instead of desktop. You can toggle it off as well.

  • Do these come with the extra free google drive space? 100gb or something..?

    • +2

Yes just switched mine on and got an offer of 100gb Google One for 1 year. It applies to the first account you click the offer button with though even if you don't "checkout" so watch out for that. It also comes with 3 months youtube premium but only for accounts that haven't used premium before.

  • I've never used one of these chrome OS tabs.

How are they ap support wise vs android?

My mums ipad battery only last 30 min or so. Was thinking this might be a good replacement, she just needs an ap to borrow ebooks from the library though. I have no idea what ap libraries use to check if it is possible on this.

    • they run android apps from the play store and whatever the chrome apps are. they seem to be chrome browser extensions, from the chrome web store

    • +4

They run most Android apps, but not always perfectly.

What they do give you is a full desktop version of Chrome, which for me is better than the Android version, let alone the even-more-crippled IOS version.
Android support is just a bonus that lets you play games, or install an offline eBook reader.

And if you are into Linux, the Linux support can be handy. e.g. running a Python IDE. But keep in mind it only has 4GB.

      • I was looking for my mum who really just needs a web browser and the "borrowbox" ap for the library. A quick google suggests it does work on newer Chromebooks.

Would be good if the kids could use these for school but they insist on windows last time i checked. That pretty weird when they use google for everything.

        • +2

but they insist on windows last time i checked.

Depends on the school. And don't go by official policy. Call the school, and ask for the IT support guys. They will tell you what students actually use, and what works.
My kids' high school uses Microsoft services such as Office-365, but MS has good support for Linux and MacOS these days. So in practise, kids can use almost any device they want, including Chromebooks. But official school documents don't mention it.

  • This review looks promising:

With chromebooks, as long as the display and battery are good, they are good machines. This is a good price too, so for general computing it's very good

  • +2

Thanks OP, price beat at OW $303

  • +1

    Looks like a great device!

  • +1

Ok I pulled the trigger and went for it, finger corssed it's as good as reviews say!

  • I must say I bought this a few months ago on the Amazon deal which was about $270.

I've just sold it on as I wasn't impressed with it. Just too slow in my opinion, was expecting something better for a unit with an RRP of $500

  • On a bit of a side note- What's everyone's experience ordering from Bing Lee? Made a order a week ago, to the day (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/653180), and it's status is still sitting at "Processing".

    • +1

I ordered a toaster from them a few weeks back with delivery expected in 5 to 6 days. After two weeks there wasn't a single update and their contact team couldn't provide any indication of when it would even ship. Ended up cancelling for a refund.

      • Cheers for that- Ended up putting through an order cancellation.

  • Since this runs on an ARMs chip does that mean more google play store apps are supported in this chromebook? or does this machine support all the same Android apps listed on Intel chromebooks?

the new duet is coming out in couple of weeks, so the price of this one will drop
