    Got one. Big fan. Even bought one for family member overseas that had the same Breville machine as me. It's that good, compared to using the lightweight crappy one that comes with the unit.

      I picked one up too, I noticed that I have trouble applying just the right pressure every time I tamp - hopefully this helps!

          I find that if I apply different pressure when I tamp, it can cause channelling or differences in extraction time between shots. I think this should at least help with consistency.

            @poppingtags: Absolutely, thats what I meant by good level. This is apparent if you use single shot basket. I still use the stock one as Iam used to applying proper pressure. If we can get a 53.3mm, that would be further better.

    I find that you really only need the distributor, not the tamper. A waste of time to use both.
    So the 'distributor only' model is possibly better if this is all you use, as it has a better handle/top.

      I find both quite useful. I have a fantastic weighted tamper but this is just much easier to ensure a good level.

        After using the distributor it's already tamped down and level more than adequately in my experience. I've attempted to use a tamper afterwards and find there's no further tamping required, you just run the risk of cracking the puck with the additional movements. Given this you'd quickly tire of the extra effort to make negligible/no/worse difference. Tamping and leveling with a single rotation or two is much more efficient.

        Your mileage may differ, but this has been my experience. And I have seen others post similar findings.

        The 'distributor only' model is nicer to use and in appearance if this is all your interested in using.

          Yeah but if you have the distributor tamper model you don't set them both to the same depth.

            @WatchNerd: Yes - if you want to incur additional effort you'd set them at different depths. If you want to save effort with no difference in outcome (subjective, but try it yourself) you set the distributor to the right depth and do it in a single motion.

                    @WatchNerd: If you're using a knife it sounds like you're already going through quite a few motions so the extra effort may not be noticeable.
                    An interesting quote from that page "You cannot fix bad distribution with a tamp, but can ruin a good distribution with a tamp.".

                    imho using a dosing ring to catch all the grinds, a quick shake to level out, then the distributor tool is the quickest and delivers the most consistent outcome.

          I watched someone talk about how just using a distributor to tamp could actually work out better.

          Something about how compact the grounds can be packed if you set the distributor to the level that you tamp, because you are twisting and pressing at the same time (instead of just downward pressure). Therefore something about how you can adjust the grinds accordingly.

          Eh just sharing what i have heard.

      Wouldn't a distributor tool compact high areas and therefore creating uneven density?

      I always use hand to push grounds around to level the best I can to ensure even pressure across the puck.

        It would if you pushed it straight down, but you rotate it as you let the weight compress the puck. I use a naked portafilter and can see there is no channelling. Anyway, as I said your mileage may differ - but this is the opinion from someone that uses it multiple times a day.

      Improved consistency. Once you have it set you don't have to worry about pressure you are applying.

      I would add it has become a much more useful tool paired with a half decent grinder. I picked up a Breville Smart Grinder Pro a week or so ago, and now that I have that dialed in for my Breville Bambino, together with this tamper, I get the same coffee every single time.

    Bought the 58mm Matow tamp/distributor recently from Amazon. Complained and got a refund and sent it back.

    The ends are different diameters. They don't fit my Breville dual boiler portafilter.
