Energizer Smart Charger + 4 Rechargeable AA Batt $9.99 (Save $31.99) @ Woolies Palmyra WA

710

I found this at my local Woolies this afternoon. There were plenty there. A four pack of AA rechargeable batteries was ~$26 I think so this was a good buy. I got two packs just for the extra batteries.
Perfect for the little man's Skylanders portal that chews through batteries like there's no tomorrow :)

You copped a Neg vote for that LOL

Maybe should not have admitted it, coz there's lots of sensitive types around here ROFL

      • +16

LOL, who cares. Neg away. If it's one thing i've learnt, tightarses hate it when other tightarses get a deal and they don't. Which is why Broden got brodened. Personally, i would have flogged these for at least 30 bux on ebay.

        Yeh, neg away, bitches!

      • +18

It's not about being sensitive type but in this case the OP should have bought them all and then put them on ebay without even posting it here.

And while he is at it just post an ebay bargain for everyone to see how you can buy them for 15$+PH

        K.

    • +8

Charming attitude there. Because why help other people get a bargain if you can make money doing, and adding, nothing?

      • -1

For those that can't get to a store that has this deal, maybe having it offered on eBay for a $5 premium plus postage costs is a better outcome for them. I see many items go for prices that make no sense on eBay and assume it must be because the item will be delivered to someone who can't get access to the item easily.

That is in reply to "adding nothing". That may not always be true. I agree we need the sharing of deals for this community to work

        • +1

Oh crap… I meant to give you a positive. Sorry :(

    • Lol, at least the guy is being honest.

  • +2

thanks for sharing.. will definitely check out my local woolies. i hope they have them

  • would it be hard to peel the labels off?

  • Anyone know if it charges AAA's as well?

    • +1

I checked it out at my local woolies, still $39.99 in sydney :( Lady said specials are state by state.
Charges 2 or 4 batteries at a time and does AA and AAA.

  • How are theses compared to eneloops?

    • +3

Terrible. They lose their charge very quickly.

      • Thanks.

  • Saw these at my local officeworks couldn't believe how expensive they were, do officeworks price match things on sale?

    • Yes. as long as they have in stock and not on Clearance.

  • +2

    Great value but please note:

These are not "smart" chargers that detect delta voltage change, they are regular timed "dumb" chargers and will happily cook your batteries unless you control the time. For eneloops you would need to stop them after ~ 6 hours.

    • +4

Exactly these are NOT smart charges!

      Features & Benefits:

Countdown timer shows how long until batteries are charged
Battery Fuel Gauge shows charge status
Bad Battery Alert detects alerts and shuts off charging when a non-NiMH or old NiMH battery is inserted
Large visual display can be viewed from across the room
Charges 2 or 4 AA or AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries
Charges batteries at a safe, steady rate which improves the long-term health of the NiMH battery
For approximate charge times, download the user manual.

I posted an actual smart charger and nobody even really voted. Yeah might be sour grapes but I just dont understand people some times :/

Repete THIS IS NOT A SMART CHARGER!!!

      • +1

I thought that was a goody monkeyc although I may have forgot to vote - I'll go do it now.
Just waiting to see if they turn up in one of the Sam's affiliates in Vic.

        • They won't. Head office said they aren't getting any more and only sold through Sams

      • +2

Yes, you were a bit hard done by on that deal - let the record show I did give you some love on that one.

Just shows that even the 'smart' Ozbargain crowd are easily enough fooled by products from time to time - that this was called a 'Smart charger' on its packet seems to have fooled folks that it had FULL intelligent charger capabilities - when in reality it's exactly as you said, a plain dumb charger.

        • Thanks for the love guys LOL

Can you tell us what -you- mean by a Smart Charger?

        Here's Energizer.com's answer:

        "What is a smart charger?
Smart chargers use microprocessor circuitry to monitor battery parameters such as temperature, voltage and state of charge. This information is used by the charger to determine when to terminate the charge."

I feel that, if you're smart enough to use rechargable cells,
your charger can't really be so "dumb". ;-)

Perhaps the store(s) are anticipating either a complaint for misrepresenting products?

That might explain the price, except OW had a similar deal with 4x AA 265 mAh NiMH cells,
        albeit years ago… :-)

        Another FAQ-answer, from Energizer.com:

"How is the capacity of a rechargeable battery determined?

Capacity is how much charge a battery can hold
often measured in units of mAh.

        An industry standard test procedure
        for determining rechargeable battery capacity
        is used by Energizer®.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) procedure
        is as follows:

        . Step 1 discharge new cells at 0.2 C to 1 volt.
        . Step 2 Charge cells at 0.1 C for 16 hours.
. Step 3 rest cells for 1 hour.
        . Step 4 discharge cells at 0.2 C to 1 volt.

Battery capacity is determined by the hours of service
to 1 volt times the discharge rate (mA x hours = mAh)."

        Do you agree…? ;-)

The worst thing about this charger is that it charges in pairs. If one battery is flat and the other is full or half full then it will charge them as one. Hence one will be over charged/under charged. See specs - Charges 2 or 4 AA or AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries.

Neg if u will but im trying to help you out.

      • I voted for you… LOL… i also bought 2 of them at full price.. but who cares.. was damn cheap even at 10 bucks and charger works great.

  • +2

Kind of tricky for average consumers….smart chargers, intelligent chargers…..next they'll be marketing them as street-wise chargers, savvy chargers.

But yup this one is less a smart charger and more a simple charger - not quite totally dumb but little better.

Alas in testing Energizer rechargables also don't stack up that well against their Duracell counterparts. That all said for $10 its a reasonable deal.

Combine this charger with a $5 wall plug-twist-timer and you'll have a reasonable solution for most people.

    • wise charger?

  • None at FGate Vic. Apparently they are a promotional item at some stores and not others. Does not seem to be state restricted however so ring around your local stores.

I guess not such a great deal compared to the eneloops recently @ 8 for $20, as the dumb charger seems useless if its going to overcharge batteries etc.

  • +1

After using Low Self Discharge (LSD) batteries like Eneloops I don't bother with anything else now. This is still a good price though.

  • Thanks - Woolies Pally still had some!

  • ONLY PALMYRA - don't bother looking anywhere else. Somebody over-ordered.
Lady there said they only had what was on display. Probably all gone by now.
I grabbed a bunch. The batteries alone sell for $25/pack.

And yes m0nkeycheese, it really is a smart charger. The "countdown" is just a rough estimate of the number of hours remaining.
Correct it is slow, and only in pairs.
So no good if your gadget uses 3 cells, but that is unusual. (LED torch?)

Can you please explain how it can determine the difference between a flat and charged cell if they are charged parallel in the same circuit? Thats not smart in my book!

btw I dont care that much, just helping people make an informed choice

      • Can you please explain how it can determine the difference between a flat and charged cell if they are charged parallel in the same circuit?

Obviously you want a matched pair. Works well for devices that take 2 or 4 cells. And you keep set together for life, which is a good idea anyway.

It should detect when the first one reaches full charge. Since this is an 8-hour charger, it doesn't have to be exact. Still much better than a 15-hr dumb trickle charge.

If you want a really smart charger, see
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65596

        • The point im trying to make is that a real smart charger has the ability to detect each battery independently hence it being smart. Even if both batteries were used in a pair they would both not be exactly the same over time as they would deteriorate at different rates.

I obviously know what a smart charger is no need to link one 0___0

        • Well, it may not be the smartest. But technically it is smart.
I took it that your drew the logical but incorrect inference that it was timer-based.

I obviously know what a smart charger is no need to link one 0___0

That was not for your benefit :-) (unless you missed the deal)

  • yep went to local woolies, its not on sale anywhere else.

  • +1

Hey m0nkeycheese , I tried so hard to get your deal at Sams in Vic, but got no love at all. Does that mean you get a "virtual" plus vote?

  • Someone wrote: "The worst thing about this charger is that it charges in pairs. If one battery is flat and the other is full or half full then it will charge them as one. Hence one will be over charged/under charged."

All you'd need to do is buy one of those Chinese cell voltage meters (some even read digitally), costing -under- $5 incl shipping.

Place similarly discharged cells (in pairs) into each of 2 sets of charging bays.

I don't know, however, how you're going to distinguish between

    • flat but rechargeable -and-
    • flat and- no longer able to hold full charge (as much as they did when new)…?

    Anybody know?

    • +1

Yes, buy an actual smart charger. Not this

      • +1

        Can you recommend a cheapie?

  • +1

Still some left at Palmyra @ 1230…about ten left..
