[LatitudePay] JBL Charge 5: $119.15 (Was $199) + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ The Good Guys

260
HOUSE10

I've had my eye on the Charge 5 for a while and this is the cheapest price I've seen at least (post discounts). If you apply the 15% discount, then purchase via Latitude Pay, it drops to $119.15. You can also apply 4% cashback via Shopback.

This review from What Hi-Fi is what convinced me this speaker is a good option: "The Charge 5 is currently as good a sound as you can get in a portable Bluetooth speaker design for under AU$300."

The Charge 5 seems to get compared to the UE Megaboom 3 (related deal here), and while the MB3 might be slightly higher-specced, based on what I've read, given the Charge is a fair bit cheaper, felt it was better value for money.

Note: Blue and Red colours also available.

Pros:

  • Good quality sound
  • Loud
  • Strong build
  • Water and dust proof (IP67-rated)
  • Connects to other PartyBoost-enabled JBL speakers
  • Can be used as a powerbank for charging other devices
  • USB-C charging port
  • Bluetooth 5.1

Cons:

  • No aux input
  • No stereo sound (unless you connect two speakers)
  • Doesn't connect to older (Connect+ enabled) JBL speakers
  • Some may consider bulky

  • Are you taking about charge 5 or boom 3?

    • My bad, poor copy/paste effort!!

  • +1

I've had trouble finding anything decent in the $150- $200 range .
The Bad Guys is a rotten place .

  • Dang..I just paid $150 for it last month.

    • It's not too much of a difference at least! I nearly bought it via another deal for $165 last week - the only reason I didn't is by the time I went to buy it the deal has expired.

      You happy with it though??

  • Anybody use Latitude pay before ?

    Good/Bad experience ?

    • Good experience, no monthly fees like the other BNPL.

    • +1

Based on this one and only experience of mine, I think it's pretty good. Was quick and easy to sign up, and also quick and easy to use at checkout. I used it simply to get the discount, then paid the full amount off afterwards, and there are no fees for doing this. However, I personally wouldn't recommend a payment scheme like this if you don't actually have the money to cover the full purchase up-front. They're obviously designed to make money from late payment fees…

  • I was looking at this too… I'm a bit torn though. I currently have a Charge 4 and it'd be great to be able to connect a second unit.
But of course, the party modes are not compatible between the two generations!

I don't want to go backwards, and have to get a second Charge 4 for compatibility. It's frustrating that the Charge 5 won't play nicely with the connect+ system.

    • Agree - it's a bit sh%tty they're not compatible. It's similar to what Apple have done in the past when they change their proprietry connections…

For what it's worth, while reading reviews, there were at least a couple that said while the 5 has some good added features, it doesn't justify upgrading from the 4.

      • It still feels a bit weird spending on another 4 just so they can connect to each other, when the 5 is available.
        Haven’t committed yet ;)

thanks for posting! i was about to buy the megaboom posted, but after reading some reviews it seems like this is the real deal, with many reviewers actually preferring the sound quality of the charge 5 over the megaboom.

    • +2

You sound exactly like me last week ;) Haha. Glad it's helped!

  • this or the The Anker Soundcore Motion+, most review give the win to the Anker?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Soundcore-Bluetooth-Extended-Custo…

    • From what I've read that is a great (and less expensive) option. However I chose the Charge 5 over it for the following reasons. Just depends what you want it for and how you'll use it though!

      • Charge 5 is more rugged, one of my main uses will be camping trip so needs to be able to thrown around a bit. I read the Anker isn't built too solidly. The Charge also has a higher "IP" rating.
      • Charge has more battery life (and added bonus of being a powerbank).
      • Charge has dedicated power amplification: 30W for the woofer and 10W for the highs (also means more total output).
      • Charge can connect to more speakers (from what I read Anker can only connect two).
      • Charge has latest Bluetooth 5.1 (not sure how much of a benefit I'll get from this though).
  • How JBL compare to Bose guys?

    • +2

I think they're largely designed for different markets/users - JBL (and UE) seem more to be "lifestyle" speakers, built to play next to the pool, to get knocked around, connect with your friends' speakers. Whereas Bose is more "high end", play in your home, impress your pretentious friends with a brand name… (Ok I'm exaggerating but you get the idea haha)

I've owned a couple of Bose products in the past though and had issues/faults with both, and their customer support was hopeless. As such, I've vowed not to buy another Bose thing, so they were never part of my consideration set when I bought my bluetooth speaker. My personal opinion is with Bose you pay more for the same thing (or less).

If you're after that style of speaker though, check out the Anker Soundcore and Sonos Roam :)

      • the Sonos Roam is very disappointing in comparison especially for the price

  • can't select c&c. Website is weird.

    • I was told there was no stock near me, so went for delivery. Given all the discounts I was happy to pay the extra $8, so didn't look into C&C any further…

      • Yeah saw that so i opted for delivery too. But damn i can't even sign up to Latitudepay. Got denied.

        • +1

Spewin', sorry to hear! I actually checked my credit rating the other day in preparation to see what my chances were…

As an FYI, I read that AfterPay doesn't do a check when you sign up, so your chances of getting approved are way higher. So maybe keep an eye for deals/discounts using that?

          • @bdo207: Yeah good point. I think i'll contact Latitudepay and ask what happened. It's not that I can't pay for the speaker, but a credit score is a credit score.

      • Same no online stock within 500km and I'm in a Perth suburb. I went through shopback and that paid for the shipping almost.

  • Does this have a 'next track' button. How can it be 2021 but the highest end speakers still do not have a 'go back' and 'next track' button. I can't believe this.

    • +1

I wish it had the next track button. I don't know how we've gone BACKWARDS in terms of buttons. As a little condolence they have a next track feature by pressing play twice. No previous track tho!

      • +1

Aesthetics over function. The death of technology man.

Missed this deal, REALLY chuffed about no backwards button or voice commands. 134+8 from commercial though so ehhh. I'll wait for next deal or model.

  • +1

Looking at reviews its a good speaker. Probably not worth upgrading my Charge 4.
It is a bit disappointing the Charge 5 has dropped the 3.5mm jack port. Also, putting the USB on the outside and not in the rubber cover is an odd move. I guess its because the USB C is water proof. I still like it being under cover as it helps with dust protection, meaning less cleaning.

  • When do you see the latitude $50 discount get applied? I select latitude at the checkout and it just says 10 payments of $$17~

    • +2

When it sends you to the latitude site for confirmation you get the message it has been applied.

  • Got a blue one and paid the $8 delivery. Sweet thanks!

  • Thanks! I've had a JBL Charge 3 for a while and was looking to upgrade to a Charge 5. Ordered and picking up in the morning :)

    • Good stuff! And glad to hear C&C is working for some.

  • +1

FYI its on the GG commercial site for $132 if you dont want to mess with latitude pay (or get rejected for some stupid unknown reason…)

    • how yo buy from there?

      • have an ABN and sign up

  • I have been told stock of the black model in WA is expected mid to late November.
There is limited stock in store of some colours like 1 X blue at Cockburn central.
