        • But Indians can't store fat like other people.

          Any scientific evidence?

So they will develop chronic diseases like heart attacks, stroke, and cancer at an early age especially nowadays

Could it be due to sedentary lifestyle?

          Traditional Indian habits were healthy.

          How so?

They screwed their diet with this junk food.

If people it at their main diet, then they are screwed.

          • @RSmith:

            Any scientific evidence?

Blacks have more melanin in their skin than whites. That's an evolutionary advantage for them to protect them from the sun. Similarly, India is a subtropical climate where they don't have to worry about food and started agriculture a long time ago, and their body doesn't need to store fat unlike Caucasians where they had to survive harsh winters. So their body evolved to store more fat.

Could it be due to sedentary lifestyle?

Of course, that plays a part. But we can't generalize every Indian is sedentary. But as I mentioned above people who can't store fat are more susceptible to diseases.

            How so?

Traditionally Indian habits are based on dairy and agriculture. A lot of ghee was used in traditional cooking. Nowadays ghee is actively discouraged by doctors. And all processed foods contain cheap vegetable oils.

If people it at their main diet, then they are screwed.

Not that this is the main diet. But this is one of the thousands of products people doesn't consider unhealthy and eat on daily basis. Not everyone eats like this. But the proportion is increasing rapidly, which is causing severe problems at very youg age

            • @[Deactivated]: I think you will find that the real culprit might be the Indian sweets… rather than Parle G.

              • +1

@RSmith: Indians sweets? depends. Quality and traditional sweets are made from ghee which was consumed for many years using jaggery as a sweetener. If it's made with ghee and sugar it's not that bad. But if they are made with sugar and vegetable oil, then that's a recipe for a disaster which Parle-G is. Check its ingredients.

                • @[Deactivated]: Which sweets / biscuits do you recommend?

                  • @RSmith: Sweets, anything made with ghee. Biscuits, anything made with butter in coles or woolies. Still in moderation because there is sugar. They will be expensive because you get what you pay.
I recommend whatever made at home.

That's not an option for me… Any recommended brands at the supermarkets?

                      • @RSmith: have a look in the Bakery section in coles or woolies and check for ingredients that don't include vegetable oil and only butter. Food companies cannot make anything with butter and last long, because that is real. They only make with vegetable oil because that's not real food and preserve the taste for long. Real food doesn't last long.

        • Fortunately not seen anything like cancer or heart attacks in my circle. But when I can't get enough food on my plate then sugar/fat/cancer would be not on my worry list. We can sit hear and debate trillion hours but a daily wage earner would still eat this to fill his stomach and keep going….but some of your arguments do make sense but it can not be generalise to entire population…
