Watch the Instagram reel here.

Called the store prior to posting and confirmed the avocados are product of Australia. Product of Vietnam on the pricing sheet is a typo. The boxes have the correct branding.

Old mate is the Steve Irwin of fruit and veg.

Dude needs a gig on Better Homes & Gardens or something.

    • That show is still going?

  • +2

    Time to make some guac!

  • +4

I’m in love with their super discounts. Great videos every week showing how it should be done.

  • +2

That's wild, how is it possible?

    • +17

It's not, it's a loss-leader. Everybody here is losing money.
There's no free lunch, somebody is paying for you not to.

      • +12

Not just that, but Skippy's likely works in the same way most of these shops work.

They simply purchased a truck load of avocados that the supermarkets didn't want due to age, quality or size and also most likely because there is excess of avocados at suppliers right now.

Skippy's likely didn't pay very much for these avacados.

        • +2

There's an excess… All the supermarkets and independents around me in WA ain't selling any under 2$. Meh 😕

    • +2

They have loss leaders like this outside of the store. Once you go in though the produce is quite expensive and a lot more than Woolies, coles.

  • +5

Need to find a place in Vic like this.

There are some but they are not as cheap

    • +3

Avocados are grown locally in SE QLD at this time of year. Transportation and various middlemen basically mean you'll never get something like this in VIC for avos.

      • I wonder why these are from Vietnam then, Seems very odd. 🤔 Surely it would be cheaper to source them locally.

        • +5

          read the description challenge: impossible

        • They aren’t (see OP).
Australian exports and imports of avos are pretty close. Imports dominated by NZ.

    • Henry's Mercato is good if you catch the daily deals. Still looking for something similar in the Nothern suburbs.

      • +1

Yeah they are ok, IGA Dallas is cheaper though but the quality is not as good.
Then you have Saccas Fine Foods which is sometimes good

        • I'll give those a go, thanks for the rec

  • Can I hire someone to ship me some avocados to melb

    • +1

      How much you paying 👀

    • Want some to, depending on cost of shipment

    • +1

They would be rotten by the time they got to you.
Produce is literally rotting on the shelf.

  • +4

Was waiting for the hass to hit the markets.. just fed up with the shepard ones

    • Agreed. Hass number 1, Shepard no 2, Sharwill basically on par with Shephard and Reed only good for chicken feed.

    • For myself I prefer Shepard. But more of a local purchase for me rather than something subject to transport.

  • +1

Almost worth the return flight back to Melbourne with a case full of Hass.

  • Did he cut through the pit of the avocado, that’s impressive :)

  • +7

does anyone else find him hot..

    • No.

  • How much are the growers getting if the retail customer pays so little?

    • -1

They often have to PAY for somebody to take it away… These costs get passed on to the workers… There's no free lunch.

    • +1

it's probably cheaper it's sad how much perfectly good fruit & veg is dumped either because there is a surplus, it doesn't meet Colesworth specifications or has an imperfection. The grower then has to pay to dump it so selling for something is cheaper

      • +1

No need to support colesworth however there is always going to be a surplus. The alternative is they aim for 'just enough' and you have a shortage 50% of the time.

A shortage of food creates other issues…

        • Thank you, I feel like this point is never raised in media - I only learnt about it through Cameron Murray's podcast recently.

          • @Elusive8985: The other thing never raised in the media is that a grower gets a significant premium to the market with a colesworth contract.

But to meet spec it costs more to produce compared as opposed to the cost structure targeting wholesale markets.

The risk is if the spec isn’t met for a shipment and it is rejected (often perfectly good) then the price they could obtain at the wholesale market is below cost. Even more so for weekend farmers’ markets.

But usually, a producer with a colesworth contract makes a fair bit more money than a wholesale market producer. An outcome of supermarket dominance amongst shoppers. And I suspect, in a few decades time it will lead to vertical integration and corporate farming conglomerates.

I haven't watched the video - but the screenshot attached says 9c Avos, and clearly says 'Product of Vietnam'. Whereas the title says 'Australian Hass Avocados'.

Are these Aussie or overseas sourced?

  • Is it true that I heard fruit & veg fresh produce stores makes quite good profits, especially if you run a few stores or a franchise? Have heard family dynasties are built over this.

    • If the store's as big as Aldi or bigger inside a shipping center, then yeah.

    • The farmers are the ones that make the big dollars!

      • Yes generally speaking all farmers here in Oz are a least millionaires.

I was asking about fresh produce store owners.

  • why does Victoria Point only get the offers

  • +2

I love seeing people go to the effort of posting these local bargains, keep it up!

  • +4

Finally I can have smashed avo AND save for a house!

    • +2

As long as you're not eating eggs with your smashed avo toast.

      • I'll just wait for those meddling kids to egg my new home

        • Sadly, I think they'll just throw rocks instead now. Much cheaper.

    • yes, just avoid buying lettuce right now (over 4.50 per unit here in melb!!)

  • Any stores in Perth or Hobart that is similar like this?

    • +1

      Perth or Hobart

      Mr Worldwide!

  • +1

Even cheaper than Cocos but Cocos is open 24/7 so I can go after work.

  • ah this guy. Millennial pause 🤣

  • +5

Can't see it mentioned before, apologies if I missed it… Limit 10 avos per customer.

  • Oz bargain local meet up. If you spot a Mac Pac jacket in black it's an Oz bargainer

  • What political party is this guy apart of so i can go and vote for him this election

  • +1

gotta travel through the jammed traffic in CRB road lol

    • +1

Quicker to walk there at the moment.
Only a few more weeks and it will be completed apparently

  • Inner city mortgage, here I come!

  • Would it look sus if I travelled on a budget Scoot/Jetstar flight to QLD, from WA.. and returned with a 20KG suitcase and carry on full of avocados 😂 I'd throw in a few pineapples and lady fingers.

  • +1

I've seen his tiktoks too, thought it was too good to be true so I checked the Google reviews… And I was right, tons of reviews about fruit not being fresh (ironically) and overall bad quality.

"Skippy's Fresh Frootz" is just the name, they probably didn't want to skirt the law and imply it's "Fruit" is fresh so used "Frootz".

Clever move, people can never say the business claimed it sells fresh fruit.

And these 150+ seagulls here eat it up. ItZ A BarGAIN!
