  • Not just for the Flex 5, would work with basically all modern Lenovo laptops except thinkpads and Lenovo laptops that charge over USB-C

    • I've had 4 Lenovo laptops in 8 years, none of them had the same charger!

      • My own Yoga is also different

  • Does this share same tip size for any other brands?

    • +1

The plug size is 4.0mm outer x 1.7mm inner I believe.

Brilliant thanks! We have a couple of Ideapad S145s at work and it's been a struggle to get spare chargers for them.

This is an excellent price for a good-quality 20V 3.25A PSU. It'll work great with e.g. a TS100, just replace the cable with a silicone one with a 5525 plug for better handling.

    • The Lenovo NZ site has the same item for NZ$109, so yes, a pretty good price.

    • Yeah nice idea, I just bought a PINECIL Soldering Iron, thinking of getting this silicon cable with a DC5525 Jack:
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000507169279.html

Then using an inline switch to connect it to the Power Supply:
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002567173254.html

Could use a XT60 connector or replace the entire cable as an alternative too.

      • Then using an inline switch to connect it to the Power Supply:

If you already have smart stuff you could hook it up to a smart socket so when you turn it on with your zigbee switch, it'll stay on for 3 hours then automatically turn off. Great for lazy people. :)

Could use a XT60 connector or replace the entire cable as an alternative too.

I snipped mine and soldered the silicone cable on, and heatshrinked the joint.

  • Is there a adapter for a USB-C tip?

Or maybe it also has a USB-C tip that i cant see in the picture.

    • No, it does not have the USB-C tip, round barrel plug only.

    • It is fixed 20V. You could in theory have a 20V->usb-PB adapter, but I've never seen one.

edit: thanks to eug below, I have now :-)

    • Yes, costs more than this charger

  • Indeed a very good price

  • Will it work with Ideapad Slim 5 Pro? Bought the laptop recently and good to have a spare charger.

    • I think the Ideapad Slim 5 Pro requires a 95W power supply, so no.

      • Cheers thanks

Hopefully this will work to convert Type-C USB Male to 5.5x2.1mm Female Jack

    • No, I dont think it will as the plug size is 4.0mm outer x 1.7mm inner I believe

    • +2

That looks dangerous. Does it have any electronics to do the voltage negotiation?

If not, some devices will take a charge, some will refuse to work, and others will emit smoke when hit with 20V.

Also, it is the wrong size. you'd need a 4mm -> 5.5mm adapter too.

    • +7

It won't fit as the socket size is different, but it is a very odd adaptor which could damage devices if it did fit. There is meant to be PD negotiation before it sends 20V down the line.

Something active like this would work. That can handle up to 45W, there are higher-powered ones around.

      • I agree with your caution, I have a few old HP barrel chargers and bought a HP specific adapter- as power is one of the few things that you need to be really careful with.

  • Appreciate the help of anyone who will respond to this:

I got a Lenovo 65W Charger Adapter which I'm currently using for my Lenovo Yoga, the charger is similar to this : https://www.adapter-laptop.com/ac-power-adapter/3318-65w-len…

My adapter can allow me to insert a USB-A cable. Now, can I use this charger and insert a USBA to USBC cable to charge another laptop that operates in 65W via usb-c port (Sample is HP Elitebook).

The only problem of mine is, which USB-A to USB-C cable shall I use that can support 65W. Will this one work? UGREEN 5A USB C Cable, 40W USB Type C Quick Charger Cable Charging Compatible with Huawei P30, P20 Lite, P20, P10, Mate 20, Mate 20 pro, Mate 10, Mate RS, Mate 9, Honor Play, Honor View 20 (1M) (link: https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Charging-Charger-Huawei-Por…)

    Again, appreciate your response pls.

You should not be able to insert a USB A-C cable and charge your laptop at 65W. If you plug an A to C cable in, it'll stay at 5V. The laptop can recognize that a charger is connected but it will stay at 5V as it can't perform negotiation.

With that charger Lenovo uses a proprietary plug and USB sideband signalling to negotiate the output voltage. If you look carefully at the charger socket (and the included cable) you'll see 2 additional pins on the sides that carry the USB-SB signals. One side of the charging cable has an extra bump at a corner to prevent you from plugging it into a standard USB-A port.

      • thanks for the info :)

    • That's a different adapter than shown in the deal.
To reach the full potential of the charger, the cable you use must support 20V 3.25A 65W.

That linked USB-C cable you shared supports 40W, not 65W.

Going to be difficult to find a budget cable like that. Can you get one from Lenovo? I'd expect around $20+.

  • Buy it and find adapters later? Or just get the GaN stuff from Amazon for triple the price :-)

  • Thanks op. This would make a nice compact power supply for my lipo charger.

  • +1

Thanks OP. My 2 daughters are using the Flex 5 for school so bought 2. Great post…

  • Thanks OP snatched one.

  • Bought one.
    Thanks, Cheapskate Paul!

Can anyone think of a good reason why Lenovo would be going out of their way to clear these out at barely above 'common-man' postage prices?

    • Hmm, maybe they have a ton of them and want to get rid of them before Type C becomes mandatory?

    • The same item on the Lenovo NZ website is NZ$109. My guess is that the A$ price should be A$102 but someone forgot a zero.

    • +1

I think you are right about the postage prices as it was sent via DHL Express. It took 3 days from when it left Shenzen to arrival at my home in Adelaide. It went via Hong Kong, Singapore & Melbourne. Pretty good for $12.

  • Thx OP. I checked out via cash rewards, I'll update if/when it updates.

Edit - tracked for $1.02 bringing it to $10.98, don't forget Cashrewards!

  • the plug looks for EURO wall plugs not AU??? but says AU?

  • +3

To all those commenters above who posted links to AliExpress pages with adapters/switches etc thanks, I bought 2 different things.
2 months later when they finally arrive I'll be thinking what the hell did I buy this for?!

  • Any similar charger available for Thinkpad laptops (USB-C)?

  • Haha just copped it. If anyone finds a good adapter to USB C for Thinkpads, please share

    • The one mentioned above will work, although it's limited to 45W.

    Will this work with Lenovo Flex 5 14" - Graphite Grey - i7-1165G7 CPU / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD (Model number: 82HS0088AU)

  • Looks like Lenovo may not honour this deal. The tracking of mine is showing:

    Thursday 21.10.2021
15:58 Local time | Returned to shipper
    SHENZHEN - CHINA MAINLAND

Lenovo has already charged me though.

    • Same here.

    • Me too. Very annoying. Now have to chase the payments for 2!

    • Same :/

  • Mine just arrived this morning. DHL tracking still says "Returned to shipper" but the Lenovo order portal says it has been delivered.

    • same
no idea whats with the shipping info, but turned up anyway :/

      • My item has been listed "returned to shipper". I sent a support request to Lenovo and they said it's still on its way. Will wait another few days and see…

  • Bought this for daughters laptop which is a Chromebook flex 5. Doesn't even have the barrel connector..
Now to find an alternative use for this power supply :/

  • Mine arrived today. Cable is super thin. Feels more like an AliExpress cable than a Lenovo. Either way thanks OP. Deal is good, just taken back on quality.

    • +1

I wouldn't worry about the cable as it's 20AWG which is fine for 3.25A over 2m. The voltage drop would be about 2.16% which is acceptable. Just as a reference, the max permissible voltage drop for USB is 5%.

Cheap aliexpress cables have more insulation than copper as plastic is cheaper, so a cheap cable may have the same thickness from the outside but have less copper than the Lenovo one. If you're comparing it to a USB cable, don't forget that USB cables have 4 wires and a shield so there's even less space for the power wires within.

  • Mine has not shown up yet :/ - anyone else still waiting ?

Edit: status says expected to ship Nov 17 / arrive Nov 26.
