What Subscriptions Do You Think Are Actually Worth It?

I know the usuals like Spotify and Netflix will be answers but I’m interested what other people think are actually worth it considering we live in age where everything is a subscription.

    Home & Contents Insurance
    Comprehensive Car Insurance

    • -1

Depends. Home insurance is necessary but you can save a bit by not having contents insurance. Someone steals your stuff? Get new stuff.

Comprehensive car? Depends what car. If you can afford a replacement you may be better off only having 3rd party. For a new car though comprehensive makes a lot of sense.

Donald Thump's new premium/paid social media platform :D

  • +1

Prime for sure, free delivery and quite a lot of good content to watch.

I had Netflix subscription nearly 10 years and last year started to suffer from Netflix syndrome. I literally spend so much time browsing rather than watching. Sometimes even gave up after 15 minutes and did something else. And then the monthly price started to go up, so I gave up.

I got Disney+ this year when someone recommended me to check it out and after a month trying it out bought the yearly subscription.

And I got a free 1 year Apple TV+ and didn't manage to use it even once lol

    • +5

I hadn't heard of the syndrome though but it makes sense. Netflix used to have a great curating algorithm but now it just shows garbage whenever I browse. Annoying thing is I semi-often hear of a movie I want to watch and find it on Netflix via Google, so they obviously have stuff I'd have been interested in.

I think the Amy Schumer voting changes damaged their curation a lot too.

    • +1

same here with Netflix, the new "play something" option helps a lot

    • I'm almost the same,

I have Amazon Prime for both the free deliveries and Prime Video
I tried cancelling Netflix but then my sons complained, I might try again
Disney + is pretty good so I also got the discounted yearly subscription
I have the free year of Apple TV+ and it's also good, Ted Lasso is worth it alone!
I have a discounted Youtube Premium sub mainly for Youtube music which I think is better than Spotify
I think I'm maxed out so won't go the Paramount sub,

forgot to add Optus Sport free as part of my phone account
Kayo $5/mth via a Telstra account membership
      Playstation Plus
      and eBay plus

  • -3

    All the subscriptions I have.

None of the ones I don't.

youtube premium just to get rid of ads

    • +19

Use Youtube Vanced (on Android) or SmartYoutubeTV (on Google TV) instead, as they're completely free and removes ads.

      • Any options for an LG OLED? I think it'd require me getting a shield or box and then running vanced or something off that. Otherwise for the convenience I think premium is alright..

        • +1

Most things don't work with LG. I had a shield hanging off of mine, but then LG had just "enough" stuff that I couldn't be bothered having two remotes and another box plugged in etc.

        • +2

I just bought a Google TV for 99 dollars just to use the SmartTubeNext app and its been so amazing having no ads or sponsors in any of my videos. Best 99 dollars I have spent in a long time.

          • -1

@PiratePete1911: Thanks for that, ill look into it :)

            • +1

@perhaps: I also bought the ethernet adapter to make sure I wouldnt have any playback issues, my mum complained about the wifi strength in hers so I decided to use ethernet for an extra 30 bucks.

              • -1

@PiratePete1911: 100% essential for all TV's/streaming devices IMO esp the LG, the wifi was very shoddy (constant dropouts, lag etc). I have mine hooked up to mesh router so the "media room" has really good connectivity + reliability of ethernet.

          • @PiratePete1911: STN is one of the greatest apps I’ve ever used. I’ve got mine installed on a Amazon fireTv and voice control works perfectly every time.

      • -1

Youtube Vanced is garbage. I tried it and its very buggy.

        • +2

second this. could not get it for the life of me to work on my phone. So went the indian youtube premium way.

        • +7

Been using it for years… It's been literally perfect, I haven't noticed a single difference between it and normal YouTube except no ads.

    • +1

there are dozens of free adblockers ? wtf

    • youtube premium is good. the normal subscription fee is bullshit tho. I got around it using india subscription using VPN and now it's worth it at $2 a month

    • +1

This is such a waste of money, use an adblock

      • I know. It boggles my mind!

Youtube Premium (Pay in rupee if you can figure it out)
    MUBI Annual
Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps (Discounted down to $28/m, with 3 free months a year by cancel threatening)

    • How'd you get Adobe CC discounted to $28 a month?

      • There are a few whirlpool threads where ppl have said that if they keep threatening to cancel, the customer retention team will offer discounts to people to get them to stay.

        • Basically this. The lowest I ever got it was $23/m but they're getting smart to people doing so only got $28/m this contract cycle — But with the three months free it worked out $24 cheaper anyway.

(Edit) Even going through the sub cancel page on the website will trigger a bot to give you some kind of deal, so you should check it out every couple of months because they add new deals depending on the market: Could be a couple bucks per month off the remainder of the contract, or a free month or two.

    • Mind elaborating on getting utube premium and pay in Rupee ( Taken its INR).

      • +1

The original guide on here has the "Expired" tag, but it seems Argentinian Peso works out cheaper by about a dollar per month and is the same process — Guide here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/630052 (VPN Required)

p.s. there were some VPN hacks posted here where it was under a dollar per month…

    Their YT channel is excellent.

NBA League pass if you're Argentinian or South African(or from any other country which is cheaper than the rip-off Australian price)

    • +1

I sub too - have been in Mexico for a few yrs now lol
But it is barely worth it as the app and site is terrible
The condensed games are poorly edited and slow to appear
      I could go on
Most streaming sites are around $10/mth which this is if you are smart
I think the quality of this service doesn't compare to say Netflix at a similar price, or especially at the double/full price

      • +1

I’ve not had any of those problems to be honest. I stream full HD games for the teams I’m following and I’ve not had any problems with the app(sometimes I watch on my ipad) or the website(other times, I watch on my htpc browser connected to the TV). My only issue of note is that my league pass login seems to get locked out sometimes and it’s not from me trying different passwords. Still, relatively minor because I can just reset the password quickly and continue

Not sure if there are any problems with the condensed games as I only watch the whole game streams.

For $80 a year and I get all 82 games of every team I’m following and the playoffs, I think it’s a bargain. Especially now that I’m working from home every day and I can just leave it on in the background while I’m working so I don’t miss anything :)

  • indian youtube premium. $7 for 3 months

    Tidal via VPN to Argentina.

The top Hi-Fi plan costs $145 Argentine Pesos (approx. $2 AUD) per month and the Family plan only adds on an extra $1AUD for up to 5 extra linked accounts.

Tidal (allegedly) pays their artists more per stream, almost triple that of Spotify, and it also has Hi-Fi streaming for audiophiles or those with decent audio setups (MQA is a different issue altogether).

Discoverability and UI aren't as good as Spotify's, but definitely looks worth it, especially at the price.

  • +6

My single most valuable subscription is YouTube premium. It comes with YouTube music and me and my family use both YouTube and YouTube .usic on a regular basis.

Also I've now subscribed to Google one for Google photos. I did try and run a self hosted nextcloud solution, and after a hardrove failure which scared the crap out of me… Decided to just get the Google one subscription.

Amazon prime - I wasn't using Amazon for a good one year, and now recently just been purchasing so much through prime. Sometimes I feel guilty that someone is making their way to deliver this one small thing to my house (like its a waste of fuel, packaging etc…).

Optus sport because it's free for me.

Netflix and Disney+ is hit and miss, I go through long periods of not using it and then when I go to cancel it there's some interesting content.

  • +1

Apart from Netflix, which is worth the subs, Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium with YouTube Music are good value for money.

Google Drive is convenient if you're in the Android ecosystem, however the storage tiers are way out of wack - 100GB, 200GB, 2TB. WTF is with the huge jump? Oh! Profit!!

HBO Max - want it. Need to jump through hoops to get it. Geo restrictions suck.

  • +3

Microsoft 365 Family - 6 users with 5 PC/Mac Office installs and 1TB of cloud space each, can usually get the renewals under $100 p.a. Great deal. Share the cost across those in the extended family, and we all get Office and cloud storage for SFA.

+1 to the Amazon Prime, I hate the company but between deliveries, great video selection, and a decent 'starter pack' of music streaming, it's too useful and too cheap to ignore. Every man has his price, and it seems like mine is $59 a year.

I got eBay Plus for "-$1" but I wouldn't pay for it. Too many limits, exclusions, and targeted-only offers (even within eBay Plus members, like that coupon a week or two ago.. stuff that!)

The one eBay treadmill worth getting on is free: if you somehow find yourself on the "List 5 items this month for only $1 FVF" list, it's amazing. Fortunately both my eBay accounts (only one of which is eBay Plus) have been on the targeted list every month for over a year now.

    • +1

Every man has his price, and it seems like mine is $59 a year.

      I'd watch this movie…

He was just an ordinary man. Though sometimes it felt like life was just passing him by. But when he signed up to Amazon Prime, something… changed. He felt different. The world looked at him differently. And in just 24 hours' time… 12 dead Russians, 5 dead Chinese, 3 or 4 dead Cubans. The world was once again safe for democracy bargains.

Spotify have a friend overseas that I pay him to get overseas rates lol

$3 per month for my Microsoft OneDrive for 1gb. I used it for uni and work. Don't know how I'll live with out it. So much easier to download than use a USB. Though I do have a USB but mostly OneDrive. As I can upload from my phone as well.

AminoZ member subscription. You pay them 10 per month, you get free shipping and the 10 per month goes into store credit. So if you buy supplements, to me, this is a no brainer.

    • +2

$3 per month for my Microsoft OneDrive for 1gb

      Ur rich

      • Extremely rich! I pay no more than 1.5c/mth per GB.

        • Where on earth are you paying only 1.5c a month per GB?

          • +1

@RandomFox: Might be a family plan signing up from different country

          • +1

            @RandomFox: 1TB for about $90 wit the 365 sub - 6ppl is $15 pa each…so 1GB is 0.125c per month (sorry miscalc'd)

  • +5

Windscribe lifetime subscription. Whenever I see vpn deals voted to front page I feel good that I don't need to pay anything anymore

  • +3

Spotify family plan shared with friends. About ~$3 a month is an absolute steal to be able to download music, choose what I want to play and not have ads. I listen to at least a couple hours of music a day so the cost per minute/hour is incredibly low.

OzBargain Premium Platinum Remastered Anniversary Directors Edition

    • I cancelled my subscription when they stopped the "free back massage with every message posted" offer. Not worth it for me any more.

  • +3

    $17 VPN crunchyroll

  • Argentinian YouTube Premium ($2/month), no ads and still supports the people I watch (they get same ad revenue as if an Aussie was watching the ads).

I like to support the content creators I watch in a tiny way, but the Aussie price is insane.

Amazon Prime as others have said is amazing too, although I wish other states then NSW/Vic got overnight delivery 2 day delivery isn't so bad and the free delivery from Amazon US 'hack' is handy occasionally too.

    • Do you have to create a new account for this to work, or can you sign up with a VPN using your original account?

I have so many saved videos and channel subscriptions that I'm not sure I would be bothered importing across.

      • +1

  • Hotstar+ - while i stream disney section wife streams indian tv shows.
Also youtube premium to avoids ads and other features. Both are Cheap as subscribed from india using vpn

  • Prime for obvious reasons.
Apple tv+ because I really like what they bring to the table.
Playstation+ as i do some multiplay there.

In general I like subscriptions where I can get good use of during when I’m subscribed and don’t feel like it’s rushed.

    • +1

Which shows/movies in particular on Apple TV+ would you recommend? I know everyone rates the morning show and Ted Lasso but I haven’t heard much about anything else

      • It's honestly not worth it. Give it a few more years to actually build up a proper catalogue. Makes sense why they drip feed episodes to make up for the lack of content.

Invasion on Apple TV plus is alright.

        • I got a free trial with an iPad and I was quite surprised at how little they offer. Seems like it would be a little value add if you're an Apple One subscriber, but totally not worth it on its own.

      • Your preferences might vary, and these are what I have watched and liked. (i’m no horror fan, so havent touched any from that collection)

top of the order are most liked.

Internet is only subscription I have… and google drive, but only to use my survey rewards.
I won't ever be paying a subscription for television or music or home automation or a fitness tracker or any app or other software.

    • You made no mention of your Reader's Digest or National Geographic upon your nightstand, good sir

Have you finished your crosswords yet? I would like to peruse the Phantom and Charlie Brown comics once you're done

      • +1

Nope, never paid for subscriptions before the internet age, certainly don't intend to now.

Hey, if you want to make perpetual donations to finance these companies go for it.

        • +4

Are you also making perpetual donations when you buy groceries? Go to the cinema? Hire a plumber?

Because we call that "buying goods and services". You give money to a supplier who gives you something you want in return. It's been a thing for a while now

          • +2

@GrueHunter: Yes of course. This isn't rocket science - I think you you could understand what a subscription is if you tried.

Will I pay Woolies a subscription for perpetual grocery deliveries? No.
Will I pay a subscription for unlimited movies at a cinema? No.
Will I pay a plumber a subscription to undertake whatever plumbing needs I need in the future? No.

It sounds like you do understand the difference. So now I don't understand the point of your question.
