  • How does this work when you have used an Australian address for your Google account that’s linked to your YouTube account?

    Does this cause any issues?

    • +97

Yes the internet police come knocking on your door. But since you have a different address they can't find you

      • +6

        Lol.

But seriously Google has a long history of permanently banning accounts and even preventing the person behind that account from opening a new one when accounts violate their terms of service. I’m sure this is a (very minor) violation but considering the amount I have invested in Google saving a few dollars a month is not worth taking much risk that I be banned forever…

        • +14

Google does the same thing with their off-shore tax shenanigans. Imagine the uproar if they punished their users for doing the same thing…

          • +5

@psdillon: There wouldn't be uproar. Like most problems, only a very small group would be affected. And therefore "no one" will care.

        • +1

How much did u invest in google?

          • +8

@Chchnu: Referring to the fact that my entire families emails for the last 14 years have been linked to my legacy (free) Google Apps For Your Domain setup, ~150gb of photos in Google Photos, ~100 places tagged in various Google maps lists. Home assistant automation setup in Google Cloud, owning half a dozen Google Home devices, a couple of older android phones and Google arranged the registration of my domain… would not be fun to rebuild all that…

            • +2

@stirlo: Yea ok then if thats the case maybe dont do the VPN thing lol.

            • +3

@stirlo: They definitely have you by the giblets.

            • @stirlo: Damn you accidentally reminded me of how annoying it will be to not have all my tagged places in Google Maps.

            • +1

@stirlo: Me too, email accounts with my personal domain managed with Google, only US$10 each year.

            • +2

@stirlo: The legacy free google apps (now GSuite) for your own domain is the bomb. That has me right there. Plus I'm fully into the Android cult - those Apple people are going to hell. When I opened my gmail account, I actually imported years of mail I had. I've got mail going back to 2000. That large history combined with google's search has come in handy now and then.

        • How does it feel shitting your bed every night because someone somewhere in the world got asked to leave their bed

      • +1

I guess it should be an Argentina police who comes to Australia and knock on your door, telling you "your address is wrong".

    • +7

Strangely on the India plan i seem to have been charged $14.95 the last two months wtf?

      • +4

They’re onto you. No issues with mine still.

    • +2

Never heard of any issues. Also, the user experience with YouTube is unaffected by it.

  • +2

Enjoying YouTube Premium for the whole family for 6 months now on this plan. Thank you

  • +28

If you are subscribing to YT Premium to avoid the incessant ads, there are FREE options - YouTube Vanced is one or ad blockers. No downloads of course.

    • +21

Doesn't help when you watch it on a tv like I do the majority of the time.

      • +9

If you have android tv then smart youtbe tv is the option for you.

        • +4

Given OZB favourite TV is the LG OLED, most people are out of luck.

      • +1

        Samsung dex to your phone.

    • +7

Why neg? Half the people on here are happy to bankrupt a business most days 😂

      • +1

My concern isn’t Google. It’s the creators. Least by me using the VPN they still get something.

Plus it lets me use an AppleTV and not Android TV with modded apks.

        • -3

          Sure it is.

        • -1

The creators get paid by view and like. So, use the ad blocker and like their videos.

          • +4

@Miroslav: No they get paid per ad shown in a view or number of premium views. No ads or no premium equals no pay.

Deeper Connect available on Indiegogo works well. Will save you a lifetime of VPN subscriptions as well.

      • Deeper connect is a Pi Tor device i think.
        https://linustechtips.com/topic/1218319-has-anyone-tested-th…

        • From your link:

Deeper Network is unlike TOR in implementation and avoids a lot of TOR’s pitfalls. Deeper Network is based off of a truly decentralized implementation (public blockchain and a unique consensus algorithm); it is able to offer faster connection, more privacy and security. The Deeper Connect Mini is a user friendly device designed with user experience in mind while abstracting away the implementation details.

        • Just skip past the huge response from the pessimistic fool that calls himself manikyath and read Deeper Connects response.

    • +2

I would like to add there is also a extension called Sponsorblock on chrome. Basically what it does is it blocks sponsor segments from youtube videos.

      • -2

This is also now built into Youtube Vanced.

    • -2

Wait. We pay Google money and they STILL throw ads at us?!

      WTF is the point, then?

    • Exactly, Adblock Plus for example works like a charm - no YT ads at all. I guess browsers with built in ad blockers (Opera, Brave, Vivaldi, …) would be as useful.

      • Opera doesn't, I used to use it for this reason. There are specific yt extensions that you can add

Adblock plus' ability comes and goes. It isn't even as effective at blocking display image ads as it used to be

        • As far as Youtube is concerned, I've been using Adblock Plus daily for almost 10 years to watch my playlists with no ads and never had a problem. I've used it with original Opera and various chromium based browsers.

Regarding web pages and ads on them, Adblock lets a few though from time to time, then they fix it. A game of cat and mouse I guess.

    • +2

The main reason I used the vpn method to get premium was so i can play videos in the background. Really helpful for getting the little one to bed with lullabies or white noise. No ads is just an additional bonus

      • you can play videos in the background on your android phone if you open the video on chrome

  • +3

I’ve been doing the same thing with the India version. Soo good! I cant live without ad-free youtube and playing YouTube in the background on my phone and when locked

    • +7

Haha do you get bollywood music in your recommendations?

      • +1

        Yes

      • +3

The YouTube music app tries to do this when you first download it, but there's a menu in the settings where you can pick your favourite artists and genres and just choose the western ones which makes it normal again. YouTube itself just gives recommendations based upon your activity so it's totally fine

      • Nope. Not how it works. It would be exactly the same as having a membership with an Aus address.

      • +1

No I don’t at all. I dunno why? I always just get my actual recommendations

      • +1

At first yes, and then it comes in waves, all this Indian culture movie and music recommendations, but google must learn you're not interested, but the last wave of indian stuff was only a few weeks ago even though I signed up to india YT a couple of years ago

        • +1

Not true. I’ve had it for I think around 18m/2y and it’s no different to what it was before.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: No, it is true. Just because you haven't experienced something doesn't mean it hasn't happened for others.

My experience has been very similar to what that poster stated.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Same for me - I've been using YT Premium that I signed up for with an Indian address and I've never seen any Indian recommendations come through.

            • +1

@Flying Ace: Must be the lucky few ;). I’m not willing to risk it for 80 odd cents. Still so cheap as is.

      • +4

Initially but it goes away quickly based on your viewing history

any similar deal for Spotify and Netflix?

    • Here is one for Netflix with Turkey vpn
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/608762

      • +3

I tried setting up a Netflix account through Turkey without luck.

        • I got it to work but was super hard. Then, i am able to connect but my family overseas (with America) can't connect to Netflix now, so i might have to change to Brazil instead of Turkey.

      • Thats more expensive than this deal. Are you going to post deals to every country's youtube pricing now since it seems you dont care about price.

    • Yes, I'm in a Spotify family as well - recommends me normal music based on my interests but some of the "editors picks" which is a complete different category are Bollywood playlists lol

Netflix I was in but a lot harder to do so scrapped it and used Stan (and Amazon Prime video!) instead

My 2¢: it's a lot easier to just join an OzB family that already has it set up, get a discounted price without any worries

  • +2

i really need to move from India to Argentina.

its charging me ~$3.36 on the 8th June for a family subs.

    • I also need to make the switch.
Let me know how you go moving to Argentina - if you need to make a new account or whatever…
I had some issues trying to get other OzBargainers on board as part of my family when I signed up in India.

    • Don’t, see my comment below.

      • What comment below? Raising the foreign currency tax?

    • I was born there. I’ll sell you my passport for the right price.

      • -1

You can sell your partner visa sponsorship to chinese girls for like 80k. Just find an agent to sort you out.

        • Far out. That’s not bad haha. I’m an Oz Citizen. Came here when I was real young in the late 80s. No place like Australia!

  • +13

Been a happy Indian customer for years now. Without doubt my most used Ozb purchase!

  • +2

Coincidentally I was trying to sign up a friend last night to YT Premium India subscription and found out that YT India subscriptions are no longer available so went with Argentina.

  • +6

Just remember what happened when they raised the foreign currency tax and we Netflix users had to flee to Turkey.

    • +5

Emigrating seems like an extreme measure.

    • Are those drastic foreign currency tax an Argentinian thing?

Is the tax simply an exchange rate?

  • -1

Netflix $12 a month, Youtube Premium $15 a month, what a joke. $1.62 is fair.

    • +4

You’re an employers dreams. I could just cut your wage in half and you would think it’s fair.

        • +5

Not quite there. Only in my 30s. It’s ok, once you leave mum and dads, my comment will make a lot more sense :P

      • +2

So, Google makes billions of dollars, you make them "loose" $11 and that's is equivalent to cutting your salary in half?

        • +1

No, I was just making a point, in jest of course, but still a point - It’s outrageous that some people think they can decide what is a fair price for a service/product. It’s simple, don’t like the price? Don’t pay! It’s a free market.

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]:

some people think they can decide what is a fair price for a service/product.

            Hmm.

            It’s simple, don’t like the price? Don’t pay! It’s a free market.

That IS deciding a fair price for a service/product. ;)

            • @the discombobulated panda: Haha I knew someone was going to say that. Yes, good point, but people shouldn’t feel they are entitled to determine a fair price or criticise companies or people because they have a lot of money. They are free to become a billionaire themselves and donate 95% of it instead of acting like an envious brat. But hey, just my opinion.

  • +1

Im on the Indian version. Only problem is it blocks about 15% of my 80's playlist.

    • +2

Same here, never had an issue though.

Also use VPN to argentina to get Tidal HiFi. Only found a select few songs/artists that you don't get locally, however, for the $2-3 per month for a multi device plan I cannot complain.

      • Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of joining Tidal after I learnt they have best quality music compared to Spotify / YouTube Music / Apple Music / Amazon Music / Deezer

  • If you change from India to Argentina, do you just update the address?

    • +6

I don’t think it’s worth the risk of changing to save a few $$

  • -8

Hey OP. You mentioned 28 degrees MC is no fee. But I search and found out from this website that Purchase and cash advance rate of 21.99% p.a.

There's up to 55 days interest free for purchases so if you pay off the bill each month you're fine.

And the award of OZB 2021 goes to @Lone star 🌟
I mean what are you expecting from them

    Just call me Diego

  • +1

Are people using secondary google accounts for this?

    • +2

      Yes

    • +3

I've been a happy Indian sub users for over a year not sure its worth changing for ~80c a month. To answer your question I used my existing account and never had a problem.

    • +4

Used it on my main for close to two years now, no issues
