Qantas SYD/MEL/BNE/ADL to Hong Kong $399 One Way

490

As part of Qantas Grand Prix Sale, currently on Domestic and International Flights.
From experience, sale may end sooner than stated on their site (21 March).

Works out to be ~$800 return for a return flight to Hong Kong (Qantas - includes checked in bags, meals, in-flight entertainment, QFF points etc.) which I think is a great deal.

Travel Periods:
01 May 2012 - 31 May 2012
01 Aug 2012 - 31 Aug 2012

A few other specials worth mentioning (have different Travel Periods to HKG deal, prices shown from SYD although generally looks to be the same as MEL/BNE/ADL):
Shanghai (Pudong) - $399 one way
Mumbai - $999 return
Johannesburg - $1599 return

Great! Was waiting for specials to happen and just booked my next trip. Thanks! Hate the $30 credit card transaction fee from Qantas though… that's 3.75% premium on my $800 ticket, what a rip off!!!

    • +3

Agree. 3.75% credit card surcharge is a rip-off (especially considering that they pay to CC issuer possibly about 0.5-0.7% and it's tax deductible for them anyway)

OMG just found out I had to pay an extra $20 per flight if I want to pre-select my seats! When has Qantas international dropped to the same standard as Jetstar and other budget flights!!?? DISLIKE!

      • i thought that should be free considering the price you are paying..since when has it been first come first served?! will they charge checked in luggage in future too? =O

This is a good price, in current times at least, I paid this amount for a trip to HK last year.

Also, I buy $50 vouchers and then apply them to circumvent the credit card fee for domestic flights - this might work for international as well.

    • Do you have the URL to buy $50 vouchers? Did you use one $50 vouhcer with the balance paid by your credit card for each of your domestic flights?

        http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/gift-vouchers/globa…

        T&Cs:

Must be wholly redeemed in one transaction for adult base fares (excludes surcharges, fees and taxes) of equal or higher value to the voucher amount. Surcharges, fees and taxes apply to all fares paid with a voucher and must be paid by credit card at the time of redemption.

Damn it! I wish I knew this trick before I hit that PAY button, I would had saved $30!! There goes my bottle of Vodka from Duty Free…

        • U cant get free travel insurance from ur cc if u purchase the voucher first if ur credit card give u free travel insurance. The other trick. Bring to flight centre for price beat and ask them to waive the fee

        • Thanks, bragains & nnnnnnnnng, i'll definitely give it a go next time I fly with Qantas.

        • As I stated below, using a prepaid voucher doesn't negate the insurance on any of my cards. I'd suggest you read your PDS for your travel insurance, and if your provider decides that paying for a flight voucher doesn't constitute paying for the travel, take your business elsewhere

        • +1

For me its complicated, i rather do price beat with flight centre, got discount and free cc fee

Note that Qantas gift vouchers are not true "credit" vouchers. Rather, they are treated as an empty shell bookings. Make sure you that you have all the necessary passengers recorded when purchasing the gift voucher. You will not be able to change the passenger list once the gift voucher is purchased.

Also as per the T&Cs, beware that gift vouchers can only be used to pay for the "base" fares.

Do not purchase a $500 gift voucher to pay for a $500 return ticket as the gift voucher cannot be used to to pay taxes and surchages component of the fare. You will not be given the option to redeem for sale fares if the base component of the fare is less than the gift voucher value and will be forced to redeem to a higher fare such as Super Saver fare. Best to stick to the minimum voucher amount which is $50.

        • wrong post

        • <moving post>

      • yes, I pay for the voucher and the remaining balance with a credit card (so complementary travel insurance still covers the purchase)

I found out about this with the 10x bonus point voucher promotion Qantas ran just before the end of last year

        • Damn. 10x points. That should really boost your ffq.

I buy my Qantas tix through zuji and not get charged the cc surcharge. Expedia passes them along now, didn't used to, and they're more expensive. So zuji has my business now.

Zuji currently showing the same price of $797 for the date I looked at for Aug12

      • Zuji doesn't charge any booking fees unlike some other online travel sites which charge booking fees.

        • <moving post>

      • Unless Zuji prices are significantly cheaper I'd rather go direct with Qantas. Zuji charges quite an expensive administration fee if you want to change your booking ($55) or cancel your flights ($110) which is on top of any fees that may be charged by the airline. Plus I get bonus frequent flyer points on my credit card by booking directly with Qantas.

Although the current Zuji $20 hotel evoucher promotion when paying with Mastercard may be attractive for some people.

        • Cairnsn, do you have to buy one $50 voucher per passenger or per booking if there are more than one passenger for a booking?

        • +1

Joe888, when purchasing Qantas gift vouchers you will need to select how many passengers there will be travelling. You can put up to 9 passengers on a single gift voucher. When redeeming you must purchase the same number of tickets as there are passengers listed on the gift voucher. That is, if you buy a gift voucher for 2 people, then you will need to purchase a minimum of 2 flights, one for each passenger.

Basically a gift voucher is an empty flight booking (shell) without any confirmed flight details (date, time, departure city and destination etc). Redeeming the voucher is basically the process of adding flights to your booking. The gift voucher reference number will be the same booking reference number once you've selected your flights.

You can still purchase one gift voucher per person, but this means they will be on separate bookings and you will have to go through the processing of linking the bookings if, for example, you want to be seated together.

What about the airport taxes and ticketing fees??

These little rascals added another $525 to the price of my Cathay Pacific $798 return ticket Sydney/Beijing…

    • there are no extra taxes or fees for most of the destinations listed… but this is specific to the destination, just part of the research needed before you plan to travel…

  • You must pay for the full ticket using your credit card or the insurance isnt valid. Using a prepaid voucher negates the insurance. However, if you bought the vouchers using the cc you might get away with it, but I dont think so.

    • Using a prepaid voucher doesn't negate the insurance on any of my cards. I'd suggest you read your PDS for your travel insurance, and if your provider decides that paying for a flight voucher doesn't constitute paying for the travel, take your business elsewhere

    • Depends on the card. Some cards require you to pay for your entire flight with your credit card. Some cards requires a minimum spend on pre-paid flights and accommodation and other cards have no activation criteria at all. As mentioned already, best to check your PDS.

You may be risking it on a technicality for those cards that require you to pay the entire amount on your card before travel insurance is activated. Does you travel insurance provider consider you to have paid for your "entire" flight if you purchased a gift voucher with your credit card and used the same card again to pay for the remainder of the flight?

      • Does you travel insurance provider consider you to have paid for your "entire" flight if you purchased a gift voucher with your credit card and used the same card again to pay for the remainder of the flight?

        Yes.

  • was looking at this last night, but there is other charges

    $797*

    • Includes surcharges, fees and taxes except [local airport taxes] collected at time of check-in.

How much is it and why doesn't Qantas mention this in their price, are they trying to trick people??

    • The local airport taxes apply for departures from airports such as Jakarta where you still have to pay the airport tax at the airport on departure, rather than having it included in the ticket which is what most airports have now moved to. For Hong Kong it isn't an issue.

    • $797 "includes" all surcharges, fees and taxes so $797 is what you pay (besides the $30 Credit Card fee, or you can pay by BPAY). The flight ticket actually cost $421 and the rest ($372) is for fuel surcharge and airport taxes.

By the way guys, Virgin Atlantic has a similar price during the same May period for $798.86 without the CC fee I think. I am so pissed off now, as I would rather fly Virgin than Qantas. At least it'll let me choose my seats right after I booked my tickets!! AARRRRRR

    • if you were QFF Silver or above, you could choose them.

  • crap price to queenstown. and i need a flight to SH in between OCT and DEC.

  • Good prices for sure

Bought mine for 199 return as i work for Qantas … mauhahahaa

    • What a great way to start your holiday by not getting on the flight because it's full with full-paying passengers, waiting and visiting the airport everyday until you get on? Even for staff this is a great deal.
