  • Building a new machine soon and will need a new license .. not being a student and not looking too much into this so far - is this a good price best way to get a licensed copy of the OS?

    • DSE selling the windows 7 home premium for $224

      • You can't compare this with DSE's retail license. This is an OEM license. MSY is selling this for $93.

        PRODUCT DESCRIPTION (in red text):

        "Note condition:
this is an OEM product, must be sold for system builders or together with our system package"

    • either this or oem. up to you or grab someone who had access to msdn or msdnaa

If you really wanted to be cheap you could enrol into a course but never actually enrol into any subjects.

Windows 7 = $90. Finding out your OS is obsolete in 6 months = priceless.

    • Truefact, windows 8 is out soon. If you're feeling adventurous and need an OS right now, go get the consumer preview of windows 8. Keep that until the full release (could leapfrog to beta and RC builds when they're out) and then get the new OS when it's out.

OEM is still a legit copy, they get in trouble, not you. Windows 7 will still be a good operating system long after Windows 8 is released. It's actually the first genuinely good operating system they have ever released, in my personal opinion.

If this came on a time when I had a bit of spare cash, I'd follow through on what I have always said, that Windows 7 is the first one I'd actually pay for if it was at a decent price.

  • or windows 8 for free, consumer preview until start of 2013

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/consumer-previe…

…works fine for me and has built in virus protection, bit strange at first not having a start button

    • Does the consumer preview have the full features of win 7?

      • Well it's Windows 8 so it's different to Windows 7, but it's not crippled or intentionally missing features if that's what you mean. They may remove features from OS to OS but overall you are getting a lot more in Windows 8 than you are with Window 7.

        • So if I install Win 8 on my computer currently running Win 7 all the programs will still work fine? Like steam, chrome and all diff games? Or better to run it virtually just to try it out?

        • Yes, for the most part, everything works identically as it does on Windows 7 now as it does on Windows 8. Even video card drivers are supporting W8. Steam, Chrome and others work fine.

You won't be able to test games in your virtual environment so best to install on a new partition and try out to begin with.

      • yes it has the features of win 7 …it has a new start menu screen instead of start button and search screen, at first i didn't like it, but u can change the icons so it actually is useful …the new look is with tablets and touch screen in mind

…the only negative is i couldn't install my printer software for dell printer and sometimes my screen blacks out, but that is probably because i am on a mac with windows lol

    • but even if it works perfectly without any driver problems or what not - this will expire at some point right? possibly giving you short notice and having to buy high priced retail? I think from memory the windows 7 betas all expired about 3 month after the official release.

      • +1

No short notice, it's completely transparent from day 1 how long it will last for.

        http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-w…

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview will last until January 15th, 2013.

        To check the expiration date:
        1. Hold down the Windows key and press R
        2. Type: winver
        3. Press Enter

With Windows 8 expected to launch in Oct-Nov timeframe, you will have plenty of time to buy the final OS. You will also be able to get your data off it as Windows 7 gave you 2 hours before shutting down. In fact, you could upgrade from Windows 7 Beta to RC and extend the expiration date by another 9 months (http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php/2009/06/upgrade-your…)

  • Guys - don't forget you can get the Windows 7 "home premium family" pack for about $200… that gives you 3 licences for less than the price of 2 singles.

  • I personally try not to buy OEM vision if can. u get urself trouble in a long run with the software. buy real version for piece of mind as window 7 last years

    • Huh? How would you get into trouble? I bought an OEM version of Windows XP from a guy on eBay who sold it with a SATA cable to claim that it was "hardware" - rofl. 6 years later, haven't had any issues yet.

What's the cheapest, most appropriate license you can get away with using in a VM such as Parallels or Fusion on a Mac? Retail, OEM or Upgrade license?
