What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

I know Australia is not a big fan of Halloween, especially Trick or Treat, but surely you will watch a horror movie or two.

Hereditary is one of the best and is re-watchable.

Unpopular opinion, slasher movies, like Scream or Saw, are not horror movies. The antagonists are humans. Also, Casper and Ghost are not horror movies even though there are ghosts in tnem.

It's over. You can stop pissing your pants now.

      • This horror is based on reality and still ongoing. I would have linked the actual movie but YouTube requires you to be logged in and over 18.

        • watching this drastically reduced my intake of meat, that's for sure. when the film asks the question 'why should an animal die because you're hungry?', I didn't have a good sensible answer to this, totally stumped me and was a turning point in my thinking. still eat a bit of meat, but this question still rings in my head over and over. alot of these types of movies are a bit much but this one nails it.

          • @buckerooni: I eat meat but I think that in a few decades form now people will look back and consider the practice of killing an animal for food as savage and unacceptable. I think technology will get us there some day, when we'll be able to perfectly replicate all sorts of meat in lab.
I recognise, and I say this with no pride whatsoever, that I am too selfish to give up meat, cheese, fish etc, I just love eating them too much.

I was about 10 and at a sleepover birthday party. My brain was corrupted that night for many reasons.

    • +1

Top movie! Sardu and Ralphus are my idols.

    • +1

Ha. Me too. Disgusting movie. I saw it as a kid too.

  • +6

    My top 5:-
    Alien
    The Evil Dead
    The Shining
    Candyman (1991)
    Dracula (1958)

    • You watched Dr Sleep?

      • I haven't. Isn't that the sequel to The Shining? Any good?

        • +1

          Not bad

        • Imo it was actually better than The Shining. Very well made and a good follow up.

    • +1

Evil Dead and Alien used to scare the crap out of me as a kid
As an adult, Blair Witch had an effect on me when walking alone late at night.

    • The Evil Dead tops the list for me.

      • -1

The evil dead is not horror per se, its a horror comedy.

        • Not talking about Army of dead. the first part.

Lol… I had low expectations going in. Nothing like the original.

Generally I'm not a fan of horror movies, because they're too simple and usually irrational. You hardly ever have smart characters making smart choices. Not to mention plot holes and inconsistencies. But the worst is their predictability. Relying on pure jump-scares is like a bad comedy relying on a laughing track. With that said, here's my favourite (or least hated ones):

      -Host (2020)
      - Nightmare on Elm St (the original)
      - The Hills Have Eyes (2006 remake)
      - The Thing (Carpenter's)
      - Jaws (original)
      - The Descent (only saw it once)
      - Chucky (traumatised me at 4yo)
      - IT (traumatised me at 5yo)
      - Paranormal Activity 3 (best of the paranormals)
      - The Visit (nekkid gramma '~')

One's I keep hearing about but never got around to watching:
      - Sinister
      - Insidious
      - The V V itch
      - Hereditary
      - Conjuring (Devil made me do it)
      - As Above/So Below
      - The Empty Man
      - Terrifier
      - Hellraiser 2
      - The Ring (Japanese Version)
      - Scream
      - Babadook

      • +1

Hellraiser 2 isn't that great. The original is better imo. Also, if you're up for some reading, I'd recommend reading the Ring novel that was source material rather than watching the movie itself. The novel has much better exposition and is clearer on character motivations than the film, but it obviously lacks the sensory aspects of film.

    • OP asked for horror movies. Not horrible movies.

  • +3

Forbidden Planet. Technically Sci-Fi rather than Horror, but it scared the cr*p out of me when I was a kid!

  • +5

    The Vanishing.

  • To me the best horror films are ones that affect you on a psychological level. The “jump out go boo” ones are much better than the “buckets of blood” varieties. The more tension that is built the better.

    I recommend checking out
    The Haunting (1963)

    My list includes
Jaws; prior to the bits where you see the shark.
    Alien
Trilogy of Terror; the possessed native doll bit

Even some of the Aliens in Doctor Who where they play on your fear of the dark and the feeling you are being watched when no one is there.

To me a good horror film leaves with residual doubts even when your rational mind is saying “don’t be silly”.

the Vashta Nerada in Doctor Who's episodes Forest of the Dead & Silence in the Library
"hey, who turned out the lights?"

      • +1

Yup, that's what I'm talking about. The little bits of my monkey brain that keep sending out alerts even when the rational bit keeps trying to keep it together.

With the reboot series the Vashta Nerada, the Silence and the Weeping Angels were, particularly, unsettling baddies.

        • +1

I have an old wobbly brain too, but the 2 parter with the Vashta Nerada is one of my best; I wish they would (or wouldn't) make a come back
I have nightmares about the weeping angles - don't blink, just don't blink
The Doctor is back on tomorrow. Chibnal is leaving, as too is the lady doctor. I hope Matt Smith comes back

          • +3

@the Unforgiven: I think they problem with Jodie Whitaker was they made her too timid. She should’ve been more like Tennant’s Doctor in the library as the shadows approached.

The Doctor : [the shadows are advancing] Don't play games with me! You just killed someone I like, that is not a safe place to stand! I'm the Doctor, and you're in the biggest library in the Universe. Look me up.
[the shadows stop advancing, pause, and shrink rapidly]

She just wasn’t arrogant or kick arse enough.

I love, love, love River Song.

            • +2

@try2bhelpful: I don't like Jodie's daks (are they called knickerbockers?)
She always seemed to lead with her nose

There was one episode where she found another Doctor, but that story arc went no-where; she was more interesting than Jodie as the Doctor

Oh, I do hope it is River who is the next Doctor, but she can't be. But they always use their timey-wimey when it suits them

Forest of the Dead & Silence in the Library are my 3rd favorite Doctor episode behind Let's Kill Hitler & # 1 is the 50th anniversary episode

I will be up early to download the latest episode. No doubt it will have a Halloween feel to it

              • +1

@the Unforgiven: I would love it if they made it Catherine Tate as a reawakened Donna/Doctor. She was a fantastic companion. I got really sick of the female companions being soppy on the doctor.

Either that or the other doctor. Maybe that is why the arc didn’t finish. She looked pretty kick arse as well.

River was such a brilliant character and she was part time lord DNA from the Tardis. She was uploaded to the library so they might find a way.

                • +1

@try2bhelpful: Not Doctor/Donna again, I'd rather have River, or another female Doctor; Missy

Yeah, let's bring River back; and Matt Smith

We shall find out at Chritmas who the next Doctor is. Maybe it could be a Cyberman
It is Who, anything could happen

                  • @the Unforgiven: I would’ve loved to have seen a female doctor dealing with River and Missy.

                    • @try2bhelpful: Too many female Doctors then, have to throw a bloke in the mix

                      • -1

@the Unforgiven: Yeah, one, maybe two, out of thirteen is way too many, huh?

                        • @try2bhelpful: I thought you meant 3 on at the same time - River, Missy & the Doctor. That is 3 & not 13

                          • @the Unforgiven: Ahhh, misunderstanding. I was more talking about the dynamics between the characters if you made the Doctor female. We, certainly, saw some fluidity with the Doctor with Captain Jack.

Was Missy a doctor? I know River was; she had a PhD in Archeology.

                            • @try2bhelpful: Yes, Missy was a Doctor & Captain Jack ended up being Bo & the end of time! I liked Gwen ;) Torchwood could have gone more than 4 seasons. I miss K9 too
It all started doing my head in, all this timey-wimey, I prefer the old Doctor Who & the aliens like the Cybermen, the Daleks, the Ice Warriors, etc
I started watching Doctor Who in the 60's. It was the 2nd doctor, that is why I like Matt Smith, he is kind of the same

                              • @the Unforgiven: Tom Baker was my first Doctor so I'm keen on Sarah Jane. I'm glad they brought her back; It is a shame the actress died.

I quite like the new series there is a lot of humour in it and the production values are MUCH better. Some of the chromakey on the Jon Pertwee ones was really dodgy.

                                • @try2bhelpful: K9 used to always say 'yes mistress' to Sarah; she was the best companion
Jelly baby anyone? When I did that earlier this year when I went shopping, I think I only had 2 kids took 'em from me, no adults cottoned on. It was good to see Tom in the 50th Anniversary episode

The new episodes are hard for me to understand; is it to do with the broad accents? I had to watch today's episode twice to try & get what they were saying, also to try & get the plot line. I hope they get a Doctor & a companion/s soon that I could understand. The weeping angle scared me like usual, but why was it in it? And Clair? She seemed familiar, but my memory ain't what it used to be.

                                  • @the Unforgiven: I, actually, knitted myself a long Dr Who scarf. I use it to wrap around my Sous Vide container, now. Offering kids Jelly Babies might get you in trouble :).

Still to see the new one. Will look tonight.

                                    • @try2bhelpful: You don't live in Tassie, if you did, that scarf would be around your neck
I get into trouble all the time. It doesn't matter if I go out, or I stay in, I just get blamed for everything; I won't bore you with any details.
Life is better down here in Tassie, we only had one lock-down due to that big passenger ship earlier this year or last year; we all walk around mask free like there is no virus. All the borders are closed, so we are safe, we are a prison island this Van Diemen's Land
Did you make heads or tails out of that episode of Doctor Who? Could you understand them?

        • +4

Weeping Angels. One of the very best, where Dr Who only had a very minor part at the end.

          • @BOGOF: I think the episode was "Don't blink". Probably my favourite episode

            • +2

@dizzle: The episode was called 'Blink'
It was season 3 episode 10 of the 2005 reboot
              "Doctor Who S03E10 Blink"

              • @the Unforgiven: Liked by many it seems - and has great acclaim :

"Blink" received widespread critical acclaim, and is widely considered to be one of the best episodes of the show. Moffat won the BAFTA Craft and BAFTA Cymru awards for Best Writer, and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form; while for her single performance in the series, Mulligan won the Constellation Award for Best Female Performance in a 2007 Science Fiction Television Episode. In 2009 the episode was voted the second best Doctor Who story ever by readers of Doctor Who Magazine.

                • @bluesky: It is a brilliant episode, but it is not my favourite
I wonder if it has something to do with Tennant as the Doctor

I forgot there was a new episode out today
The Halloween Apocalypse - On Halloween, all across the universe, terrifying forces are stirring. The life of Dan Lewis is about to change forever. Why is the Doctor chasing Karvanista? What is the Flux?

  • +4

    Prisoner
    Midsommar (same director as hereditary)
    Life

    • +4

+1 for Midsommar. That was cooked hahahah

    • i’d almost skip Hereditary and go straight to Midsommar - Hereditary felt like it was a draft version of Midsommar

      • They're both very fked up in their own unique way imo, though Midsommar was deff more heavy and wtf.

Even if Hereditary was a draft, it's still better than 95% of the unoriginal horror movies released around the same time.

Suspiria is also another one to add to the list (new and old Suspiria).
