      Whats a celeron?

      You must be young 😉

      • I'm young at heart, yes

      • yeah, i havent had a celery stick since primary school!

A chip that should've been canned with Core 2 Duo.

  • are these things usable? let's say having 3-4 tabs open on chrome + fb messenger

    • Chromebooks are generally better with less resources than Windows based machines.

      • But these are Windows laptop tho…..

Should be OK better with 8GB ram

Both laptops have Gemini Lake (i.e. Goldmont plus cores that can trace their lineage back to the Silvermont Atom chips in 2013) based processors. This means:

    1. The RAM modules are likely soldered
    2. They probably are built to the lowest acceptable standards
    3. A current gen smartphone will have more processing power than either
    • A current gen smartphone will have more processing power than either

Yeah, after I checked even i5 2500 faster than Celeron N4020

      • N4020 should be good for router or NAS CPU.
but if the user only need to view simple webpage, just watch some FHD video, it should be capable.
but big problem is the potentially soldered 4GB RAM, making it much less useful in windows environment.

  • this laptop has a weird numpad placement. Is this a new thing?

I own this laptop but the intel Celeron version, with 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC storage.

The reason I bought this cheap laptop, is that it is fanless (noiseless) and so I can remote desktop into a more powerful computer at the other side of my house, it works pretty well for that.

    My thoughts:
The wifi card sometimes works well sometimes has dropouts, I'm planning to purchase another wifi card (AX200) off ebay to see if it makes it better. But yeah the wifi card is 1x1 so be warned if you can't tolerate that. I however generally use ethernet where possible using a USB-C ethernet adapter.

Also you can add your own m.2 SSD drive, (which size, I don't know) I have no use for that as I remote desktop to another computer.

RAM is not replaceable but for my use case 4GB just enough for me.

The touchpad has the numberpad/calculator, I rarely use it, in the early days I used to accidently bump the button to turn it on, however I haven't had that happen much lately, possibly because of muscle memory or something like that. So you'll get used to it.

The battery for my use case (remote desktop) is pretty good, 1 hour consumes 10% battery on average, so I anticipate up to 10 hours at most of usage depending on your brightness levels I guess.

From time to time, I stream TV shows/movies from streaming services on it, I'd say maybe double the battery consumption, 20% per hour. As long as you keep the processor cool it'll work fine for 1080p content, however if it gets too hot, the video will start getting choppy, and you have to take a break until the processor cools down.

Same for game streaming, I've tried that too, if it gets hot, you'll have to take a break until the processor cools down.

Overall I'd say a good computer for office work.

    • Thanks for sharing, whats your thoughts on the laptop's screen

I'd say it's good enough as long as you don't need anything colour accurate, max brightness is good enough for indoors, I've used this laptop while on a train once and from what I recall, I think it was just acceptable, I could still work on my word documents without major issues, maybe some people might find it dark, if you read the jbhifi reviewer here: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-e410-14-full-hd-lapt…

But for me, I generally only use it at home, and mostly at night in a dark room, the picture quality is good enough for me, even for the occasional tv/movie streams, which is good enough for me (maybe not for some people), but mostly I'm generally using to look at documents, good enough for me.

Oh yeah, and on that review you'll see a complaint about the sound, the speakers are good enough for a quiet room. But I've had to crank up the volume pretty high for some things. I also use headphones as well, it's good that is has a 3.5mm headphone jack because the microphone isn't good so I use the apple earpods with it, much better microphone with that.
