I've had the Pro for a couple of weeks. Still getting used to it. It's not perfect, but is miles ahead of any Android TV box that I've tried before. I don't doubt that it's the clear winner out of all of them.

In my case, the Shield is a replacement for a Fetch Mighty and is for my elderly parents. Essentially, the Fetch has been used (in this household) as a Home & Away recording machine that can also do Netflix. 7Plus is clunky and ad-riddled, so DVR is much preferred by mum.

This isn't easy with the Shield, which is mostly geared towards streaming from networked sources, not live TV and recording. Shield can accept free to air TV with an addon TV tuner device, or over the internet as an IPTV stream. I decided to go with the IPTV (no need to buy another dongle and plug in the antenna).

There are a lot of ways to view IPTV streams on the Shield, but I only found one way to do so with EPG + full DVR functionality (PVR Live Plus and the Live Channels app) that didn't require messing about with extra hardware, rpi3, servers, etc. It seems to be running okay now and will record Home & Away whenever it's on.

Some of the ads are unusual (sex toys late at night - a confronting ad, but not a sleazy one surprisingly), I'm guessing because it's an internet stream then the stations involved don't need to follow the usual broadcast restrictions. My parents even reckon they've seen an automotive ad on an ABC stream. Supposedly, the ABC has accepted pre-roll advertising on its YouTube streams for a while now, so it's not as unlikely as I'd first thought.

The IPTV streams I'm using aren't rock solid. I had a Ch 10 stream stop working for a few minutes today because it thought I was outside Australia, and ABC Kids stream stopped with an error message (an ABC problem, not at my end).

The 7Plus app is on the Shield as a backup in case the DVR/stream fails during Home & Away for some reason. I'll hold off making a final judgement about using the Shield as a complete Fetch replacement for now. I am impressed though. Very impressed.

    • Thank you for sharing your experience. It is helpful.

Shield can accept free to air TV with an addon TV tuner device

      Where can you get one?

      • I think the homerun HD works, see here https://www.silicondust.com/

Some details here about using homerun with the 'live channels' app on android TV:

        https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/android_tv_live_channels

Edit: or construct something similar yourself with a pc running VDR with any usb tv tuner (eg Sony playTV) and the roboTV plugins for VDR and live channels. It's a bit more work though.

        • Thanks, when i checked a few weeks back, there was no stock.

I had a homerun many, many years ago. It was fantastic until firmware upgrade killed it…

      • Apart from the HomeRun, you can also use a USB dongle TV tuner. This is the only one for Australian digital TV (DVB-T) that I see people talking about: https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/webstore2/webstore_dualhd_eu…

Cons: Unlike the US tuner (ATSC), the Euro/UK/Aus tuner (DVB-T) isn't supported by the decent Live Channels app, so you either have to use the Plex app to watch TV (which is allegedly clunky and slow) or root your Shield and then do techy things to it to enable the DVB-T tuner to work with Live Channels.

It's unfortunate, which is why I found IPTV simpler.

        • Instead of rooting your shield, why not set up a server backend that does tuning, recording etc? vdr with robotv is an option, and I think there are other backends that works as well.

          • @tor: If you sell a pre configured box that does all of that, plug'n'play, then I'd consider it.

While I have the technical know-how to puzzle it out (with google assistance) for my own setup, I want it at an ease of use level for elderly family members who need it to "just work" with no maintenance or things breaking due to software updates or network reconfiguring. Is it going to work for the next five years with no tinkering beyond the occasional power-cycle?

Some of the ads are unusual (sex toys late at night - a confronting ad, but not a sleazy one surprisingly)

As the ads are personalised based on user activity, I’m guessing someone’s been secretly using the Shield for some sexy time ;-)

      • Amusing thought, but no. The ads started on day one. Also, I haven't seen any evidence of personalised ads - despite that being one of the main talking points of IPTV. There's no login for the IPTV service, so all they'd see is the household's router IP address (not static) and whatever other metadata the Shield transmits while requesting a video stream.

The sex toy ads are from Normal, an Aussie startup focusing on sexual wellness. It's strongly geared towards 30yo+ female customers.

Where was the ad showing? Was it on YouTube?

Is the Shield logged into a YouTube/Google account? User activity isn’t necessarily from use of the Shield, also based on activities associated with that Google account in general (such as on mobile phone, tablet, pc).

          • @Ebaygiftcards: Not YouTube, it was 7Bold stream I think, or maybe 9Honey. Not sure.

The Shield is logged into a Google account, but that account was pretty much unused until I put it on the Shield. Also, I doubt that the Shield/Android transmitted my device account to the IPTV stream provider. I could be wrong, but the stream isn't connected to any specific app. I can use any IPTV app that I want to access it. Actually, I could use any device, Windows box, Linux box, BEOS, OSX, etc that runs software that can resolve an m3u IPTV stream over HTTP.

    • Have you used a MiBox S? I'm considering moving from that to a Shield. I mainly use Kodi.

      • I used an original MiBox and it was pretty good for the time. I've looked at the MiBox S and it seems pretty kick arse for its price. What problems are you having with it that you want the Shield to solve?

This guy is only doing basic streaming, but prefers the MiBox over Shield because it does everything he wants for less than $100

Based on those reviews, I'd still get a Shield. Every time I cheaped out and bought something lesser, I always regretted not just ponying up for the Shield from the start. It has good support.

        • No major issues it's just getting a little long in the tooth. There's a few minor issues: no auto frame rate matching, Kodi is forced closed overnight while the MiBox stays on.

      • Do it, won't regret that move, also brings the power to use customs UI without the lag the mibox gets

        • Custom UI for Android or for Kodi?

          • @sween64: You can have a custom one for andorid of you wanna get rid of the add but I was referring to kodi skins

            • @DoesntEvenMatter: I use Arctic Horizon, it takes a little bit of time to build the custom widgets each start up but is otherwise fast enough (few seconds to load each page).

              • @sween64: I think I remember that. It was made but jurialmonkey I think. I just built my own and its almost instant. You might be loading too many widgets causing that little lag

I feel that we will see heavy discount on this old product during Black Friday sale this year. .

    • +1

We better! I got it on special for the same price almost exactly a year ago. This should be the normal price and special should be $200-$250. Its been out for two years now

      • -1

        and special should be $200-$250

Won't happen until they announce a replacement model.

  • Is there a version that has a built in HDD or one that you could install one inside of ?

These are awesome but I’d like to purchase one for the old man, and he’s not very cluey with downloading things to a USB

    • +2

Why not just attach an external SSD?

      • +3

Exactly. Download everything for your dad, put it on a hard drive and plug it in. I update my folks hard drive every couple months or so with new stuff

    • +2

Just plugin an external drive, even a HDD for cost. That's the big thing about the pro, it has usb ports to allow it. You'd plug it in then leave it there though.

For anybody with a 3D printer, I printed one of these and mounted it onto the back of my TV…

    Less clutter and cables…

    • wicked smaht

      • +1

        Yeah. It's a great idea.

I was looking at printing a normal stand for it and came across this.
It's a perfect fit, and takes another device out of the way, leaving less clutter.
Really well designed for ventilation and cable access.

I just used a couple of Command strips to attach it to the back of the TV, rather than screw holes.

Anybody tried xcloud with this? Is the basic OK or should one get the pro?

    • i'm interested in knowing too!!

Been waiting on a Black Friday sale for the pro from any store… seems like deals are already up but nothing with this.
