Excellent price on this popular 802.11ac (WiFi 5) Router on Amazon.
Great to use in a mesh with other Asus routers.

Based on previous deals it should come with an AU plug too considering that it's shipping from Amazon UK.

Ahhh. Do I upgrade my 68U?

    Ehhhh.

    • +11

If you're upgrading, you might as well future-proof yourself and get a stronger router. Like the AX86U, instead of this AC86U.

      • I run the 68u as well, but my wifi is all ubiquiti, so upgrading router is independent. I kind of like having two separate systems even though the asus wifi is meant to be ok. A wifi 6 AP from ubiquiti and I am upgraded.
        Depends on price of ax86u.

    • Still happy with my Technicolor DJA0231, see no reason to upgrade atm when I can just mesh those at $10-15 each

  • There is so many wifi Rt-ax routers out now. Is it worth to get Rt-ac at this price?

    • +1

Could be useful if you've already got an Asus router an need to cover a dead zone, you can use this to mesh.

  • how is it compared to Taipan AC3200 (D-link DSL 4320L)?

  • +2

    Just wait for wifi6e

  • Whats the go to cheap modem for VPN for NBN homes (FTTC/FTTH/FTTB) ?

    • +1

I have the AC68U and I use the VPN server to remote back into my network and works great for me, connected directly to my NBN box (HFC). Using Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, not sure if that functionality is supported natively.

  • According to this in-depth guide wifi 6 is only about 10% faster than wifi 5. If you have to get a new router, get this one, skip wifi 6 and wait for wifi 6e.

    • You link says:

      A high quality Wi-Fi 6 router/AP — or 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5 "Wave 2" (2nd gen chipset) 4x4 router/AP — supporting beamforming and ALL DFS channels is the way to go right now

  • Thanks! Have been waiting for this to drop!

  • I great router got it during the $199 offer.

Simple setup and config, has not missed a beat so far!

    • Scorptec? Was that free delivery?

      • I think I collected it.

  • I’m so confused when it comes to these…
Is this a worthwhile upgrade from an archer D7 that I currently have connected from the hfc Nbn box and then into Tenda mw3 for coverage!? Thanks all

    • +2

Is your setup working? Do you want something different or are you just itching for a bargain?

      • +5

        This is not the way.

        This is ozbargain, not ozoverthink.

      • Setup works but not sure if by getting something else it would be better or worth the bargain

        • +1

Upgrade if you change to Gigabit or 250Mbps.

Come back to us after purchasing it.

… in OZBargain, you buy first and then ask questions..

      • +7

Exactly, you only get your ozb card when a package arrives that you completely forgot buying only to open and question why the hell you bought it in the first place.

    Any deals on the AX88u?

  • Do you lose all warranty buying it from Amazon UK?

    • You're buying it from amazon au.

    • Asus will most likely not honor any warranty but Amazon CS is top-notch. Worst case you still got ACL.

      • +4

Not on imported purchases as it’s sold by ‘Amazon UK’ which is not an Australian entity and therefore not bound by ACL.

        • +1

Hmm this is specifically stated by Amazon for their Global Store Items: "Manufacturer warranty may not apply but you may have other rights under law"

Regardless, I've never had any problem with Amazon Global Store, they've always either replaced or refunded items I've had issues with.

EDIT: you're right though, since I'm the registered importer of the product, neither Amazon AU or UK are bound by ACL. Guess their CS is just good.

          • @rookie317: Yep you’re at the mercy of Amazons grace, but usually they’re pretty good.

  • this vs nighthawk xr500??

  • +1

Got it. 5 best features for me over crappy ISP modem:

    1. USB drive for auto backups.
    2. Wifi range improvement.
    3. Accepts wifi modem as NBN backup via USB
    4. Parental controls
    5. Gaming ping much improved
  • +4

Had been using this for over half a year and it never missed a beat. The range is great and wifi 5 is sufficient.

We have 3 laptops, 4 iPads, 1 Galaxy Tab, 1 TV and 5 iPhones connected to it and we don’t need wifi6 as only 1 of those devices has it. Our NBN 50/20 would bottleneck wifi6 anyway. You would need NBN250 or higher to make use of wifi6 otherwise you are just wasting money in the name of “future proofing” when it doesn’t make any difference.

Get this if you have NBN100 or lower and not many wifi6 devices.

    • +1

+1 on all of the above here. This is a great device, perfect for NBN and the ASUS app is pretty full featured for management of features.

  • +1

I believe UK routers are limited in power for WiFi when compared to AUS versions and that's a HW limitation that cannot be removed by flashing firmware. Quite a few discussions on Whirlpool on the subject, not sure if this also applies to this septic model.

BTW if you don't need WiFi 6 this router is awesome, outstanding WiFi coverage!

  • Would this be an upgrade from Amplifi HD? I will still be using the Amplifi HD in bridge mode as an access point to maximise coverage.

  • This or the Google Nest Wifi? Pros and cons?

    • +1

On the Asus you can run a VPN server/client, traffic analyzer, URL filter and so on.

About the most you can do on Nest Wi-Fi is port forwarding and IPv6.

  • Showing $289.00 for me.

    • Scroll down bit further tis still $205.43
      Under " other sellers"

  • Thanks snappy1234, went to buy, showing "Temporarily out of stock"

    • Back in stock now and cheaper

  • +1

IMO not worth still getting AC router in 2021
    Should get AX instead
Wait for some good deals in few weeks time during Black Friday sales

    • None of my devices are AX capable. Will I still see even a smidgen improvement for the additional expense?

      • Obviously not while your all your devices and phones are all still wifi 5 technology. (introduced in 2014)
And fine if you never upgrade your devices.
But if you do upgrade any of your devices or phones then perhaps a wifi6 router might have been a better investment instead of a wifi 5 router.

  • +1

Be mindful of purchasing wifi kit that is not built for the AUS market.

There are some 5Ghz features that are hardware locked OUT of some, not all, hardware releases for the overseas market that are available AND are beneficial, in the AUS market.

There is a thread on SNBForums, if I find it soon I'll post it.

This is an issue with a number of grey imports you will find on eBay. Whilst cheap the hardware is missing features that allow full performance on the spectrum.
