Sony E-Mount 35mm F1.8 FE $699.95 ($649 after Sony Cashback Redemption) @ Ted's Cameras

80

Amazing lens which Teds has for $699.95, but when combined with Sony cashback brings it an incredible $649.99.

I believe this is the lowest price this lens has been.

For full-frame members of the Sony E-Mount, comes this Sony FE 35mm f1.8 lens, providing a classic and familiar focal length in a portable and lightweight package. This lens allows you to take advantage of the compact nature of the Sony Mirrorless system while still accessing the premium qualities that make Sony a class-leader. A reliable lens, the 35mm f1.8 is dust and moisture-resistant, while it features a Linear AF motor for fast and near-silent performance - this is a suitable option for both stills and videos.

if you are not already with sony, canon 32mm is far better for similar price.

What made you compare a 85mm to a 32mm? lol

  • Question for the experts here: is this a better lens than the 35mm f2.8 Zeiss? I'd think not? But the price seems to be much higher than the 35mm f1.8.

Is it simply due to the Zeiss branding?

    • I’m not an expert but have stayed away from this lens for the same reason - I own the Sony Zeiss 35 2.8. The benefits of the Zeiss are the Zeiss micro contrast and pop. It’s also more compact. The one posted is faster, has much nicer bokeh and renders similar to the 35mm F2 on the RX1 (which is a terrific lens). This makes it a lot harder to ignore this lens. For this price it’s a fantastic buy if you don’t have a 35mm for your A7x system

      • Thanks for your comments.

Yeah I've got the Zeiss 35 2.8 on my A7III, but just wondering if the 1.8 will be an improvement over that.

    • I'm assuming with Zeiss you are getting a optically superior lens, sharper and less chromatic aberration on the edges of your image. Zeiss and Leica have been in the camera/lens game for a very long time. If you really want your shallow dof then the 1.8 would suit.

-ah, I see you guys have cover it

    • You pay a premium for the Zeiss brand but the Zeiss it is a more premium lens. The Zeiss is half the size (36mm vs 73mm) and is considerably lighter (280 grams vs 120 grams) which makes it easier to handle and more portable. There are improvements in the lens quality but nothing that will be too noticeable in most circumstances. If you are using it frequently or taking it traveling, paying for lighter weight, smaller form factor and minor quality improvements might be justifiable but for most people this is the better choice.

The f1.8 vs f2.8 is also going to have an impact but that is more based on how you use the camera rather than quality. Either could be the better choice depending on the types of photos you are taking

    • I got my 35 2.8mm few years ago for 6xx.

I don't think the 2.8 is a better lens, it's just a smaller and lighter lens and zeiss do carry a premium.

If similar price go get this instead of the zeiss

    • Thanks for the comments guys, appreciate it. The Zeiss 2.8 is indeed much smaller and therefore more portable i suppose as compared to the 1.8.

I've got a 24-70 2.8 GM sitting in my basket for now and when I do decide to pull the trigger on it, so will probably save the money on this one to spend on that.

      • if you consider the sony 24-70gm, do consider the sigma version, similar sharpness but cheaper

        • Is photo quality comparable?

Might do, but if i can get the 24-70 gm for a good price, i'll pull the plug on that. Especially with the cashback making a comeback…

          • @squarepants: I rented the GM and ended up buying the Sigma (and would return if it wasn't good) but my experience with the Sigma was exactly the same so kept it. Looked at plenty of youtube reviews and both seemed on the same level which is why I pulled the trigger. Only thing to be aware of is the Sigma seems to have an issue with dust inside the lens (apparently fixed on newer batches) - it doesn't affect picture quality and I know Sigma will clean it out and replace the seal free of charge but I cbf right now. Just something to be aware of - I don't believe the GM has as big an issue with dust. It's also slightly heavier but at this weight it's not a huge difference. If you can get a GM for 2k with cashback go for it!

            • @timesoldroman: Thanks for the insights. Definitely sub 2k! Got it pricematched for 1985 at the moment, with gift cards and cashback, should bring it down to a more palatable level.
