  • How easy are these to use for beginners?

    • +1

I would recommend them as an excellent first choice. These three printers are "i3 style" and come partially assembled, which means its a fairly simple assembly process. Once you download the printer "slicer" software Cura, there are ready-to-go presets for both the Mega-S and Mega-X (use the Mega-S profile for Mega Pro). All you will need to do then is (1) assemble (2) level the bed (3) insert filament (4) install software (5) copy file to SD card (6) aaaand print!

I haven't tried the Mega Pro laser engraver feature, so I can't comment on that.

      • Thanks for the reply!

What were the main reasons that the customers returned them for?

        • I'm not privy to the reasons sorry!

          • @pinchies: When it states free returns, within the 30 days, does that include change of mind?

      • I bought the X & Pro (2nd one is for a family member) - so looking forward to it.. complete beginners here! This seems like a great tutorial for us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVX-Vi98640

  • Great prices!

    • Madness! $116 for a 3D printer delivered! And people wonder why I have so many 3D printers…

      • Must be something wrong with them hence why they were returned…

        • +1

Or something wrong with the original purchaser - but seriously you can look in any 3d printing group and see people returning printers because they don't have the patience to properly level the bed and think the printer is to blame for the issues it causes…

  • Hmm, tempting.. already have a 200mm volume printer, 300mm would be good, but laser engraving would be pretty handy to have. If only the laser was on the 300mm.

Looks like the X comes with a kg of filament too

  • Mmm mega x is tempting. Not sure if the wife is keen for me to have a second printer though…

    • I have that same dilemma! 😁

  • can you add the laser engraver to the X pretty easily?

  • Tempting, but the last thing my sanity needs is another printer without auto levelling.. I’ll keep tinkering with the three I’ve got.

    • Is a printer without auto levelling a big problem?
What would you recommend for beginner in the 3D printer market?

      • +1

Levelling is one of the most important factors.
You don’t need it, however something with a BL-Touch probe makes life much easier.
I think some of the creality models come with auto levelling… I’m upgrading my older printers with BL Touch.
One of them is the Tronxy XS-300 but I believe the newer model comes with auto levelling.

I wouldn’t recommend to start with coreXY, pick a prusa clone much like the any cubic, but newer features that are generally desirable:
        * auto bed leveling
        * some sort of glass or film hotbed so you don’t need blue tape
        * it should have a good power supply and a reliable board with TMC drivers if possible. (Again avoiding frustration)

        • Never tried auto levelling but I printed some stabilisers for mine (essentially stiffening the springs and keeping them straight) and it's rock solid now. Barely have to touch it anymore after setting up with them installed, and that seemed to be much easier too.

          • @bamzero: Yeah I don’t even bother with springs on mine. Swap them with silicone dampers.

            • @RaihaX: Yeh I did see those after I added the stabilisers, look like a good idea.

The Mega Pro looks like it comes with some leveling module that beeps when the level is right.

      • Not hugely, just a bit more effort to get it right occasionally unless your bed is warped. I've only bothered levelling a couple of times (Mega S) in the two months I've owned it as it stays true pretty well.

      • Prusa Mini!

All my time spent on research pointed me to Prusa (genuine, not clone) for all the time i get to spend printing rather than tweaking and adjusting my machine.

Considering i've still done some minor tweaks and mods to my machine, i can only imagine how much time you'd spend tinkering with something else, especially something like the Ender 3 which is highly reccomended usually.

      • I have the original i3 Mega X and Chiron, never used auto leveling tbh, always went with manual way with the thin paper on the bed and under the nozzle on 4 corners of the heatbed, I printed hundreds of models and it works great. it's not very hard, with practice you'll do it in no time, so don't hesitate to buy a printer if it doesn't have auto leveling.
What you need to focus on when buying a printer is :
        - Print Quality.
        - Stepper Motor drive type ( can have effect on print quality and noise)
        - Print bed Size.
        - Printer noise in general and how easy is it to change fans to silent ones because most printers comes with a noisy motherboard fan.
        - Power resume function is a plus.
        - Type of heatbed material ( example: glass, flexplate etc…)

That's all I can remember for now, hope it helps

Interested OP, but any reason/s so many were returned?

I'm not privy to the reasons sorry!

Any chance you can find out?

    • probably had some fault that was recalled and now fixed

  • +2

Bought the mega Pro 2 - a good excuse to clean the shed and prepare the workshop with my son's! What's ~$180 anyway? Guess I need to become accustomed with the couch when wifey finds out… 😅

    • What's ~$180 anyway?

A fair bit of money wasted if it turns out to be crap or a problem waiting to happen in 366 days time.

      • +1

Hehe - there was some sarcasm there, perhaps didn't convey it as well! But that said, first 3d printer and an opportunity to engage with my boys (even I that means collectively tinkering/learning/modifying/fixing things).

    • Did it show shipping when you checked out? Couldn't get it to work with my eBay plus

      • Shipping inclusive of my order. I think $176 in total (or there about) - did you use the second code the OP noted?

        • Yeah I did

  • Thanks. Added an X to the collection to tinker with. Cannot be as bad as my CR10s which originally came with a free warped frame and bed but taught me a lot about fixing issues. A few of these returns are probably from people who are a bit shell shocked when first starting out.. I'm used to tinkering with them now so this is a pretty good deal.

  • I'd return my Mega S as well if I could buy another this cheap :)

    • Tempted to buy the Mega X and try to sell my 2 month old Mega S… is it worth sleeping on the couch for (or just buy new stepper drivers and fans).

  • I'm getting $50 postage (with eBay plus) - $259 for the Mega X. Deal gone?

    • im getting the same thing

  • -1

Gday op what are can you use a 3D printers for? I am a beginnner and currently have no real use for one. Although I’m looking to spend some money and learn something :)

    • My main inspiration thus far has come from HotasDIY two thirds done on a joystick build, with rudder pedals to follow.

As we speak the printer is churning out this VRGM gun stock for the Reverb G2.

Once you have it you'll also find things all around the house which have annoyed you and you can now fix.

  • Upvoted for honesty and not more “refurbished” lies

  • +1

Sorry, shipping was free, it’s now showing as $50. Consider this deal expired, but I’m going to try figure out what is going on. 😕

  • Apologies — speaking to AnyCubic they tell me the eBay promotion coupon was an accident and was not supposed to be offered for this clearance. For this reason they have bumped up the shipping cost to cover… and I wasn’t informed of this. 🤦‍♂️

I think the right thing to do now is make a new Ozbargain post since the price has materially changed? I’m going to ask the mods and go from there.

What this means is — lucky ducks who have already placed an order, you’ve scored a double discount bargain. For new orders, you can still place an order using the coupon but the $50 shipping cost is here to stay. There is the possibility that after the 14th the coupon will expire and the $50 shipping fee will also be removed. However, that also depends on the stock available as well.

  • +1

Glad to hear they'll honour the existing orders.

Was tossing up whether to get one, in the end decided to buy first and ask forgiveness later 😃

The more I read about it after though the more I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it so would have been pretty disappointed in them if they cancelled.

BTW, any suggestions on making a laser shield so if the kids walk in the room they won't burn their eyes out?

    • I think safety with the Laser is a serious concern. 1.5W is much lower than a industrial laser cutter, but I think all lasers should be treated with great respect. It’s still 300x stronger than a laser pointer. What is the wavelength (units are nm) of the laser? I couldn’t see that listed. You can get coloured acrylic sheets to block certain wavelengths. From memory, I think orange/amber acrylic is generally suitable as a shield against UV light. Another simple option would be a large black plastic box, with a WebCam inside.

    Shipping now updated to $30

    • Mega Pro back in stock too, $210.8/$206.28 with new delivery price.

  • Custom firmware here if anyone wants to try when they receive.

Looks like first mod to be printed might be this for the spool holder

    • Any obvious reasons to update? Noob to 3d printer world, thanks.

      • I'd stick with stock firmware for now so you don't introduce any unknown variables until you get a handle on it.

Some interesting features in the custom but prob more so of you're going to make mods to it, adding BL Touch, changing fans etc.

For the S and Pro the expanded print area is handy.

        • Thanks man, can get the IT side of it done, but yeah I have zero practical experience.. will leave it stock until I have printed my first toilet roll holder :)

          • @ilikecheapcrap: Also not sure how good the customs laser support for the Pro is, looks like has only been added recently and my guess is not as user friendly (no BMP support, so would only work when controlled by a connected PC.)

Have fun with it. Check out Teaching Tech for lots of useful info too. I've heard the guy Michael is very helpful if you've got questions too.

            • @bamzero: Thank you so much.
Actually bought the X for myself and the pro for my sister, so between us hopefully we get some fun out of it, much appreciated.

  • Is the laser on this any good at all? I can't seem to see any indepth or decent reviews outside those tersting it as part of a review focussed on the 3d printing. Would be good to know how it stacks up against the laser add-ons like the creality laser addition.

  • For someone starting out 3d printing would one of these or the Ender3-V2 be better? I'm looking for better value for money and overall satisfaction. Don't mind tinkering.

  • Hello! Interested in getting the mega X but seems the discount has ended?

May I still get the discount?
If not, may I know when will be the next sale?

    • The singles day coupon is still valid until 14/11 but the seller added $30 shipping after this was posted so you're looking at $244.40/$239.04 for the X now, depending whether you have eBay Plus or not.

Got my mega x in the mail this arvo it was brand new and unopened. I've set it up and started printing going fine, wouldn't say the stepper motors are silent, it's a noisy printer compared to my ender3 with a skr mini e3 v2.

    • Got mine a couple days ago as well…..looks brand new to me as well
My first printer so I not sure what a quiet one is supposed to be like. I think alot of the sound is coming from the power supply fan so might change that out

    • How did you go with it so far? Did you have to do much to get it to a good place? Or already pretty decent out of the box? I'm keen to get one as a second for a second printer as well.

      • It's really easy to set up maybe 20 mins to build. I just put on a new roll of filament, leveled the bed and it's been printing fine. The GUI menus are a bit funny but you find where everything is quickly.

      • Yeah was super easy to setup. Friend of mine came over to help me level the bed and teach me how to adjust on the fly ….done about 40hrs of printing so far …trying my best not to start modding it

        • I'd already printed the spool holder mod in anticipation using my old machine :) (model linked in comment above). Good fit, I assume will suit the X as well. Sadly too big (even just the metal part) for the tiny hubs of the Cocoon rolls I have but fits the others ok. Looks like I'll have to print a freestanding TUSH as well (I use a version that clips on the top of my CCT and it works great.)

Have ordered silicon spacers for the heat bed from Aliexpress. Those big wheels are great for adjustment, but so easy to bump and knock the level. Don't know if the silicon might be bit firmer and resist the bump a bit better. (Ordered these 18mm ones, fingers crossed they do the job after the long wait)

Haven't even got to printing on it yet though, so far only tried the laser which worked amazing well out of the box, haven't even needed to mess with the focus as seemed pretty good.

          • @bamzero: Got any pics of what you've done with the laser keen to see how it is?

            • @la838: https://imgbox.com/g/XQFKaTfmug

Haven't done much yet apart from few test runs with the supplied sample images. Took a couple of photos with the macro mode of my phone, admittedly they look better in real life where you can't see that much detail :) The source images are on there as well.

The dino is 41x41mm and the landscape is 78x99mm. The dino was printed at 15% intensity on both the card and wood, I had already wiped down the card so it looks a little lighter, the wood was straight after the burn but does look a little lighter after a wipe down.

The landscape I varied the intensity during the print, 15% was losing too much detail, 25% looked to dark so backed it down to 18% which didn't look too bad but still lost a bit of fine detail (ie the floors inside the buildings). Focus or intensity or both, not sure yet but still a little fine tuning needed.

The material and it's "burnability" varies a whole lot. Printing on white card with the same settings didn't make a mark and needs intensity bumped up a whole lot.

              • @bamzero: ahh nice, that's pretty impressive honestly!

  • had it for a week+, finally decide to open the box during the weekend.

super easy to put together and got it running in like 15mins no problem.

first 1cm layers looks good so far! cant complain for 100$+ machine. coming from anet8 back then and hypercube.
