  • Wish I waited, bought mine with the exact specs from the EDU store for ~$50 more. All in all this is a great laptop, no issues so far.

    • How long ago and did you enjoy using it so far?

      • A month ago. No concerns so far, loving it!

I've been playing New World, Valorant and a few other games on the highest settings and the thermals have been pretty cool for a laptop.

        • +22

A month of use for $50. Don't look back.

    • $50 a month is fine. If you bought it last week, than F.

  • This a good deal or should I hold out for something else?

Need something portable for both work and gaming.

    • I have this, the charging block (300W) it comes with is pretty big and heavy, so I wouldn't say that it's portable. You can charge it with a USB C (100W) but it'll be slow-charging and you'll run out of battery power pretty quickly if you are gaming. Portability wise it's not that great but build quality, cooling and actual performance is pretty amazing. Check out Jarrod Tech's reviews on Youtube.

      • wait a minute, you can charge it with usb c??? so we just plug into usb c slot and it will charge?

        • USB C port on the back supports power delivery, I don't think the one on the right hand side does. It's a slow charge .

      • I have had all sorts of troubles with charging with the 100W usb. I had went through the Lenovo forums and a support case and they said it isn't supported. Despite the manual saying so.

This is definitely not portable. Also, gaming on it without the power brick plugged in is not recommended at all.
If you're keen on going for a laptop, then I can (half-heartedly) recommend the ASUS Tuf Dash 3070 or the Zephyrus 14 (which is more expensive). The Tuf Dash has an underpowered 3070 (which folks don't like, but it helps keep the thermals under control in a thin-ish chassis). It does have a trash screen though, which may be a deal breaker.

Or you can do what I did, and get a reasonably powered thin and light laptop for work (which is still potent enough to play a bit of rocket league et al on the go), and a mid-range gaming desktop OR eGPU. Costs a bit more, but you get the best (or relatively better) of both worlds.

      • Is that the one without a webcam?

A pity those new MBPs don’t have good games. Full performance on battery would be awesome if anyone bothered writing games fir them.

        • Yes that's the one. Weird design choice IMO

      • Thanks for your suggestions, I will check out the links you provided.

    • +6

      Depends on your use case.

This laptop would be perfect for those who want to bring it into the office for work related things - then you can use it with a 100W usb-c charger there.

After work, bring it home, plug in the 300W charger and game.

      • +3

This guy knows his charging routine.

    • That one has 1x16GB soldered and 1x16GB normal DIMM.
300 Nits vs 500nits on the legion
      15.6 instead of 16.0
      100W GPU instead of 130W

    • +2

You'll be paying $344 more for 16gb more RAM, but getting slightly worse screen and lower performing GPU.

  • +1

Great deal, Anyone considering purchasing, I highly recommend watching Jarrod’s Tech review. He answers every question you could have for this laptop.

I got the L5P at launch, this a great backpack for anyone worried about portability and transport.

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-pro-backpack-17/apd/460…)

I generally put it on my passenger seat, I've forgotten to buckle it and have floored it a few times resulting in the bag flying into the dash- I've been expecting an issue or the screen not to work- nothing so far.

    • Heads up that the linked laptop bag is currently 46% off, at $57.20 down from $104. Just bought one as a Christmas present for a child

    • +2

… and have floored it a few times resulting in the bag flying into the dash

It'll be your head or someone else's eventually. Don't be an idiot

      • Slides off my chair into the bottom of the dash, and slides into the footwell.

Was mentioning the durability of the bag and the brunt it takes the couple of times I have forgotten to buckle it it in.

It doesn't take much for a 2kg laptop to move forward. Thanks for the feedback mate

  • people who have access to Lenovo Education, for the same price you can extend warranty to 2 years on site, and guaranteed battery replacement within those 2 years

or leave warranty as is and have it cheaper

    p.s. hang on I think it's ryzen 5 instead of 7

  • 20 units left at the time of this comment.

This exact spec was well received at $2209 over 3 months ago last time it was posted on ozbargain so a pretty good deal!

  • Historical low?

    • Nope. It was maybe $100 cheaper in September

      • Thanks, I wait for BF

        • No guarantees there mate…..I'm on the fence at the moment of waiting or just pulling the trigger

  • Any sense in holding out until Black Friday?

    • +1

These units are already prebuilt and currently located in Chatswood ready for delivery, whereas you could possibly face a lengthy wait time if you choose to order through Lenovo themselves and even then the discount might not be as good as the one offered here. It's up to you.

  • +1

I bought the version with 3070 and 32gb ram. This is really a great laptop.

    • how big is the SSD and how much does it cost you ?

      • $2439 with 1TB ssd from edu store about 6 months ago.

  • Does anyone know if they have price protection in case they have better deals on Black Friday?

    • eBay has price guarantee where if you see it elsewhere for cheaper, they'll refund you a eBay voucher.

If you want price protection, you'll need to check with your credit card provider.

  • Still cheaper at Lenovo Edu store with the EDUCOMM coupon ! Even with upgrade to 2 year onsite warranty is just coming at around $2105 and there is room to shave off another $100 with a quick Live Chat. Remember the version with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 3070 and 3 year premium care used to sell for around $2500 when it was 1st launched. This year Holiday silly season prices are way higher than EOFY prices

    • I had a look at Lenovo Edu Store but they only have 3050Ti, not 3060

    • Looking through the deal history you've got to go back to April for that price with those specs. Damn, should have got one back then. The 1070 in my 5 year old Clevo is still pretty decent but has started to be let down by the CPU.

    • I found what I think is the same specs, for $2114 with the 1 year warranty and EDUCOMM. No upgrade offered via chat, despite mentioning can get it cheaper on eBay.

      • Yes I tried the same. The only 'cheaper' version would take 8 weeks for build and delivery.

  • +4

Is it just me or do "gaming" laptops always look so ridiculous?

Obviously not expecting the best build quality for this price with premium materials, but just need neutral colours, simple design without whacky angles and the "gamer" aesthetic…

Can't tell whether this sort of design is actually popular or whether manufacturers are trying to appeal to 14 year olds…

    • +2

      Yes I agree .

    • Are you referring to the 'Y' logo? It looks pretty clean to me but each to their own.

      • +1

imo. the legion 7 looks far better than the legion 5, I agree with a few reviewers that think the legion 5 design is done like so to not cannibalize the sales of the higher end 7 series.

  • +1

Shame it has that style of power plug! I've had my lenovo for a year and a half and unfortunately it has developed the common issue with the power plug receiver socket:
    https://tinyurl.com/uardpc9p
I have done a complete tear down and can describe at least four problematic design flaws. It's one of those designs that seem good on paper (or CAD) but in reality will eventually fail or relies on too many tolerances being perfect. If anyones really interested I can go into alot more detail.

Other than that fantastic laptop with good performance and thermals - when I bought my Y540 thanks to good thermals it beat same hardware competitors in benchmarks.
I love everything else about it other than the power port issue. Backwards firing ports are great for a docked setup. Touchpad and keyboard works well. Full numpad is great for CAD/Graphic Design/Modelling/Data Entry.
    No other complaints.

    • For anyones interest:
The plug uses 6 small pins to register for voltage source, due to play in the design of the plug those pins can catch and/or be bent. If you're lucky/patient you can bend them back into position. This is also true of the two large ground pins.
It seems the ideas is that most pins will touch so should be fine. In practice I had only had a low unknown number touching at any point which meant fiddling with the cable every now and then to re-register. Also having all the current goes through only some points meant the charger plug got extremely hot. I ended up having corrosion on the inside of the power brick.
I resolved it to reliability by soldering on a new plug with underdamaged pins (though I occasionally rebend them) and a replacement power brick. It's been a month and seems okay :)

I have other complaints about the design of the plug but above are the pertinent bits

    • Also the issue is made slightly worse because the plug is soldered on vs JST Barrel plugs which are often used on laptops.

  • Thanks for posting this.

Pulled the trigger. Tried a few times to get a better price through the education store, but no dice. Sales person seemed to hint that it won't come down further on Black Friday, but I'm OK with that risk. At least there is no long wait time on this order.

PSA: Check for dead pixels and speaker failure
Source: I claimed DOA 3 times for dead pixels issue.

  • good deal

  • Can anyone advice the difference between this spec I found in edu store:
Second Solid State Drive : 512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe

and the one listed in this deal? (Hard Drive: 512 GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe). This is the only difference I found in the specs and it's just slightly cheaper in edu store with code.

    • One is the customisable build which doesn't have the premium warranty. The other is the same as this and will cost $2114 with code

      • +1

I'm not sure what I'm missing but with code in edu store, the cost is $2042 (albeit with 8 weeks* waiting). I think the specs are the same?

        Processor : AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H (8C / 16T, 3.2 / 4.4GHz, 4MB L2 / 16MB L3)
        Memory : 2x 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4-3200
Second Solid State Drive : 512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe
        Display : 16.0" WQXGA (2560x1600) IPS 500nits Anti-glare, 165Hz, 100% sRGB, Dolby Vision, HDR 400, Free-Sync, G-Sync, DC dimmer
        Graphic Card : NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3060 6GB GDDR6, Boost Clock 1425 / 1702MHz, TGP 130W

Edit: Just looked at the model and seems this is just the Storm Grey ver. Not sure if the colour is the only reason for price diff?

        • +1

have a look again, it is the cheaper one has depot warranty, not premium. It is also the one you can customise because it isn't pre-built.

  • +2

I've had this exact model for about a week (ordered from the Education store in late October) and I've got mixed feelings. It doesn't have the RAM issue earlier versions had, so it's got great gaming performance and thermals, but I'm not fond of the screen at all.

Out of the box the colour temperature is VERY warm and needs a lot of tweaking to look reasonable. And my unit has really noticeable backlight bleed on all four corners.

Still tossing up if it's worth trying to get cosmetic things like these fixed, but I figured I'd share my experience.

  • I haven't owned a gaming laptop ever so just wanted a little more detail on the specs…
Can someone please confirm if this link below is correct for this specific laptop? Probably helpful for others as well…regardless i pulled the trigger on this deal as my last computer purchase was in 2009 a 17" MacBook Pro….still going strong using it now but time for an update.
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5…

    • +2

Confirmed. You made a decent purchase. The 130W makes the 3060 perform as some 3070 configurations. M.2 and RAM upgradeable. Great screen.

      • Thanks for confirming…Yay…i'm excited now…this was kind of a spontaneous buy for me so i'm glad it wasn't a terrible decision lol

        • Did you end up buying this?

  • +1

Hopeful optimism of the 3070 model at the BF sales.

    • +2

Not on sale, 8 weeks’ delivery. It’s been 8 weeks delivery for the last 12 weeks.

    • may be able to help you PM me

    • I can't even find where I could purchase the 3070 model. Anyone able to point me to the link?

      • There aren't any prebuilt 3070 models in Aus currently. You need to customize a build to add in the 3070, and as said above is currently an 8+ week wait to be built and ship from overseas.

The 8 weeks estimate has been displayed for months, if you really need the extra gpu power and order one I wouldn't be expecting to get it anytime soon. Probably Feb delivery realistically.

  • Does it have a full steel build ?

    • +1

The lid and removable lower panel are both metal. Probably more likely aluminium than steel, though. Not sure.

The areas surrounding the keyboard and sides are plastic. But I see that as win, since metal conducts heat all too well, so this keeps your fingers cooler while gaming.

  • +1

    Just ordered one for myself.

    • Ouch, refer Banville comment above about the major design flaw with the charging port… refer to link posted flagging this same issue by so many others.

      • +1

It's not a deal breaker for most people, just something good to be aware of as a possibility. The trick is to manage one's sense of risk with warranty or other strategies (budgeting). A lot of machines have "common" issues, which only affect a small number of machines. This was for the Y540, and it's not a given that it would apply to this machine, which has different thermals and other factors.

        • Yes True.

Noting that I have 3 lenovo devices which all failed within the first few years. And I have 5 Dell laptops with oldest going back to over 10 years old and they all still run fine today.

          • @Logical: Dell's these days run very hot though… My Alienware 15 r2 lasted 3 years with several board/battery replacements. They then replaced it with an M15. That lasted another 2 years and tended to run at 95C for the CPU and 70ish for the GPU… The battery was on its way out when I may have killed it by trying to test a faulty wifi card. Didn't even use it that often either.

        • I agree, I have added more info on to my comment above.
TLDR Soldering a new plug and getting a new charger solved 2 main issues. Might be a rare issue. I'd definitely recommend to people extended warranty on Lenovo laptops with this style of plug! :)
I think the problem is down to the plug design so shared amongst multiple models. The issue is made slightly worse too as the plug is soldered on rather than a JST barrel jack as is popular amongst many laptops.

  • For those who are still interested in buying this, go straight to Lenovo's website and talk to one of the agents. They offered me $2050 for this one so I instantly placed the order.

    • How long is the delivery going to be? When I posted this, I also checked the price on lenovo website and it was 6-8 weeks.

      • They said it would arrive in 2 business days.

    • Can confirm, but I did upgrade to 3 year warranty for an extra 139…

  • Anyone received a notification that their laptop has been posted? Seems like mine hasn't been dispatched. I purchased mine via eBay last Friday morning.

  • back to stock

    • thanks, removed OOS

  • thanks OP. Brought mine on thur and received monday.

    Very happy so far

Now looking for ram and nvme upgrade

  • Lenovo Chat has just offered me this for $2050 - At first they said they would not match ebay store so I asked what was best price they could do instead.
