Installing a virus to take care of viruses. Just stick with trusty Windows Defender

    • I don’t think that’s how it works…

Yea I agree maybe 15 years ago. I remember trying to uninstall Norton and you'd need to find a seperate tool to uninstall. These days however they are pretty up there with detection rates and minimal impact on system performance. They can't seem to shake their reputation from 15 years ago though…

Over the past couple months there have been a lot of PCs coming into me to repair that are getting stuck on startup repair screen and won't boot into Windows. Turns out one of the drivers Norton 360 has pushed out has caused instant BSOD during boot so you can't get into Windows. System restore doesn't fix it either, have to manually go into the registry keys and disable that driver before you can get into the PC as it's marked as an 'early boot' driver it even activates during safe mode boot.

Symantec fixed the issue with an updated driver, unfortunately when they updated the driver they have caused another issue that causes the machine to not boot. The driver is inside a Windows subfolder (not the correct path but example) C:\Windows\drivers\symelam\v2.1.3\symelam.sys — unfortunately since they have the version number in the path they have put a new version into a different folder and on a few of the machines i've repaired the registry key for the startup driver is still pointing to the old path and since Windows can't locate this early boot driver it fails to boot up and goes into startup repair.

          • @Agret: Interesting. Nearly all of our customers run Norton 360 Deluxe and I've had NONE come in with that issue. Can you link a fix URL in case this starts happeing?

While I share most peoples sentiments regarding that Microsoft Security (which is the new name for Windows/Microsoft Defender) is very capable and perfectly fine for most users, I still think that we should also look at the the merits of other vendors solutions. As regards to Norton they have recently acquired Avira and Avast which are two big European vendors, so if they start integrating antivirus signatures and technologies from these companies things could be become interesting.

    • Damn, that's a big monopoly. Avast bought out AVG around 3-4yrs ago too. I guess when you can't compete with the free solutions just buy them out and shut them down hey.

I'd rather go with Kaspersky, esp. for the same price. But I believe saveonit had a bit better price for 2 year subscription.

The free version of Kaspersky has everything you need, on the systems i've put it onto it uses less resources than Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentails

Good if you have an older PC that is struggling to run Windows 8/10.
