Picked a random date, 5 nights

Agoda via Hotelscombined - $217 AUD

So this deal is $18 cheaper but certainly not $1000. Personally for $18, I'd book via HC instead of having to redeem a voucher where you are not sure if your dates will be available.

    • Not sure that includes breakfast and Pool Access Options with 1way and roundtrip Airport transfers. I was thinking about posting a comment on the discussion board, cuz they've got quick turnaround usually..but just wanted to find what the non-grabone crowd thought before i started giving them buying signals :)

btw, i think value of 1000 is for their pool access room with x2 way airport xfer and breakfast all day…

…i'm kinda drawn to their new building feel. I was in phuket four months ago and stayed at an awesome 3star hotel with wife n infant, reeeeeeally liked it - saved heaps, ate well and put excess $$ towards activities, etc.

The Agoda rate includes breakfast. Not sure about the pool. You would think a Pool View room would include being able to swim in the pool. I can't imagine airport transports would cost much at 15KM away.

Better yet, contact the hotel direct. Tell them you saw the deal and see if they can do the deal directly. With those group buy deals, the group buy company gets a big chunk of the commission, so I'm sure they'd be happy to make more money dealing directly.

        • thanks heaps neil! when i called the resort and asked about it, they advised special agoda price is $66 per night for pool view incl. breakfast - $330 - grabone $199 is about $100 cheaper. I also asked about how come agoda running specials, then they put it into perspective for me that as a business they have different revenue channels, and Agoda is one of them, where they receive bookings everyday. So to completely stop that channel (including hotels.com, booking.com, & more)they are restricting themselves and putting the revenue flow at risk….which actually makes sense!

I read the reviews on trip advisor, and I'm convinced this is legit and I'm saving even further than Agoda - off to koh samui for me :) :) :)

btw, I also found out Agoda take commissions too, so I think it's fair to share the love, don't you?

I think nick meant in the title. Anyway, I've added the name/location to the title for you.

      • oooh…ha ha, makes sense…

  • Keep in mind a few of the accommodation group buys deals have recently gone horrible wrong with hundreds of people showing up to hotels that they'd confirmed their bookings a couple of days before only to be told the middle man hadn't paid for the room, so they had no accommodation.

    • Really? Which ones?

      • +1

Ones sold with the middle man being "Villas Indonesia". Why Pay Full Price and Groupon are the two group buy sites I'm aware of that were involved. You can read more here (starts around the bottom of the first page and goes on for quite a few more pages):

        http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g294226-i7220-k49562…

I don't expect this one to have the same thing happen, but the point is that it adds the posibility of a problem. The money goes:

You —> Group Buy Site —> Middle Man —> Hotel

You've got three people who can screw up other than yourself, not counting the banks involved. If you book direct it's just you and the hotel at least. Which is worth the extra $18 IMO.

        • This thread also shows Spreets and Ouffer as involved group buy sites:

          http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g294226-i7220-k52481…

It's all Villas Indonesia at the core of it, but it seems like any group buy site that does holiday packages was most likely offering them.

        • in this case, after speaking directly to resort, it's You —> Group Buy Site —> Resort

while i didn't check how much if booking directly with resort, when speaking to resort directly they said grabone deal much better bcuz limited time offer.

after this detailed exercise of researching / verifying i've realized as long as u deal with ANY booking site or group buying site, merchant is always giving a commission to these intermediaries.

          It's extra $100, not $18 btw

    • hey tantryl, i was worried about this too and called. the deal is actually hosted by the resort directly which was comforting.

  • Yeah I got scammed by Villas Indonesia! Getting my money back from why pay full price!! Apparently the scammers got over $500k

  • The so-called RRP and 'savings' with all these deals are always total BS - especially the Thailand deals.

  • thanks to everyone for their comments & advice, it prompted me to contact resort directly and NOT buy something merely based on pricing and images on a daily deal site. im a skeptic, but i also believe in a fair go…thanks again guys! Going to Koh samui, and will be uploading my images & feedback from panalee!!!!!

Now, I just need to get the airfares…lolz! Anybody know of cheap deals to Koh Samui via s'pore, kl or surat thani?

  • Another holiday bargain…..
