Private Internet Access VPN: 115% Cashback on Subscription Plans @ ShopBack

1007

Shopback is offering 115% cashback on Private Internet Access VPN plans. Options include:

  • $19.79 for 1 month
  • $109 for 3 Months + 3 years
  • $65 for 1 year
  1. Shopback are a total scam company and will pretty much never track your purchases (likely on purpose) and you will be required to go through a lengthy manual claim process that can take 120 days or longer for them to pay you back, sometimes they will just not bother doing it and will start ignoring you (see here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/606088#comment-10122323)
  2. PIA was a good VPN that was bought out by a scummy malware company (who also bought ExpressVPN and Cyberghost and lots of websites who do VPN reviews) and is now likely highly compromised. These charlatans have the gall to call themselves "The World's Most Trusted VPN", probably based on reviews they awarded to themselves.

That said, they are offering 115% cashback on your purchase which amounts to around 15 dollars to sell your information and waste your time.

So, knowing those things, proceed if you wish. shrug

      • They're offering 95% at the moment. Which is pretty good.

  • How to get rid of these dodgy services if one have already subscribed? Just an uninstall from the system will do?

  • Oh yes, the data breach specialists

  • I find it amusing how people bang in about X VPN is dodgey, but Y VPN is better & trustworthy. You are funneling all your data through an unknown companies network. They could quite easily do a Man-In-The-Attack (where they pretend to be say your bank, decrypt the traffic, re-encrypt & send it on

You shouldn't trust any of them. But it also depends on what you're using it for…. Streaming? Well who cares. Shopping? Mmm maybe, nut keep an eye on your credit card. Torrenting? You've probably ok, but use one based outside US & allies reach. Crypto trading? nope. Banking? nope. Even if the company doesn't do anything nefarious, someone else might hack in & do it, since VPNs are a prime target due to people funneling all their traffic through them.

Also look for one that offers split tunnel VPN, so you can decide which apps use the VPN & which (like banking) don't.

As for Shopback. How many have had issues using the Shopback app, rather then the browser addon? I'm guessing very few.

  • My shopback for ghostvpn a couple months ago is still pending =\

    • Hey @MagicTsukai, CyberGhost VPN has a 90 Day Pending Period as mentioned on their merchant page.

      Cheers!

Yea I think I understand that it comes within 90 days.

Most other purchases come within faster even with long pending periods.

ShopBack are known for deleting legitimate transactions from your account after they have been tracked (amongst other dodgy practices).

I've deleted my ShopBack account and will never use them again. Incompetent customer service and just outright dishonest.

Thanks OP for the honest description.

Hi @sena86, I'd like to clarify that we do not delete any transactions from your account.
If you could provide some screenshots to highlight what you are referring to, I'd be happy to get our tech team to look into it.
There could be a minor bug that we are unaware of?

If you're Missing Cashback or a claim has been Rejected, these are usually handled by the merchant's Affiliate Network and not by ShopBack directly.
Feel free to send me a DM if you'd like any further assistance.

      Thanks!

Hi @gotyourback, I appreciate you getting in touch, but after countless issues with ShopBack, I've deleted my account and won't be using them again.

Unfortunately transactions were deleted, and if I did not take screenshots of the previous state of my account I would never have got my money back.

It was a frustrating experience where the customer service representative kept trying to put the blame back on me. Only after about 25 emails was the issue finally rectified, even though I explained the issue and solution in the very first email. A few weeks later another issue occurred which triggered me to simply delete my account.

I've never had such issues with Cash Rewards and I've claimed well over $1500 with them.

I do appreciate that you (and everyone else who has used this rep account) make a genuine effort to help many on OzBargain here and that a lot of users have had their problems resolved. However, I would rather get less cashback with Cash Rewards and know that I'll get the cashback without having to send off so many emails.

        Cheers

Hey @sena86, I'm truly sorry I didn't get the chance to help prior to you deleting your account.

Could I kindly ask you to send me a DM with these screenshots (if you still have them on hand)?
It would be great if I could raise this with our team to look into.

I 100% agree that our Customer Service responses weren't up to scratch, and quite often didn't provide proper context.
Recently I assisted the team in re-writing some of our CS macro responses to be clearer and kinder (these should be implemented in the coming weeks).

I understand your decision here, and appreciate the honesty & feedback!
If you ever do decide to use our services again, just know that I'm happy to help if needed :)

          Have a good one!

Hey @zilver, I'm sorry to hear you've had a poor experience with us.
I've personally been in this role for around 7/8 months now, so I was not aware of the previous conversation between this account and yours.

I took some time to read over the conversation you had with our Customer Service team, and I'd like to apologise for the slow response times.
Although it was an extremely busy period and we had fewer CS agents, it's still not reasonable to wait several months for a resolution.
I'm glad the Cashback was provided to you in the end.

I did want to note that I looked at your account activity and noticed only 1 click-through from ShopBack to Amazon on October 13th 2020.
From what I understand, you then placed several orders from that individual click?

With Amazon, they only attribute the 1st order placed after clicking through advertisers links.
Any subsequent orders made will not be tracked unless you re-enter through our links again between transactions.
This is highlighted in our Amazon T&C's :)

Return to ShopBack and clickthrough to Amazon Australia every time you are adding a new item to cart and making a new transaction.

If you have any issues moving forward, please feel free to DM me directly as I'd be happy to assist if needed.

    Cheers!

Note suggestion from previous thread - don't disable auto renew option until cashback confirmed.

  • There seems to be a lot of bad stories from shopback. I am lucky in that I got my shopback from the last PIA deal. I did not cancel auto renew until I got the cashback in the shopback account. With paypal, this is easy and also keeps payment from PIA if you don't trust them. Probably don't use PIA if you don't trust the though…

  • Are there any other VPN providers that also provide a proxy service to connect? PIA's shadowsocks works quite well I have found.

  • Only reason I'm looking for VPN ATM is if it'll let me get Hotstar, which I doubt.

That said I might be moving to USA next year, and if the ISPs there really do screw over people who torrent, maybe I should get this just for that purpose…

  • Was with this company for a few years and had a good experience. Changed to them after getting a 'friendly email' from my ISP when using another VPN service. PIA apparently doesn't log anything. Not sure if 100% true but never got any 'friendly emails' again.

  • Unfortunately I still have 2 years on my subscription with PIA. Only use it to travel the seven seas though, not for any geo stuff.
    Anyone have any other recommendations?

  • I purchased on the last round and received shopback funds (now in my bank).

It's free and allows me to watch geoblocked content. I don't do any sensitive stuff on it. I'm under no illusions.

  • I haven't had an issue with shopback not tracking recently but cashback has caused me issues. I done it on my phone through the app and has tracked. so hopefully gets paid out. i only use the proxy server and then vpn for geoblocking so not to fussed on privacy. shopback page also shows "watch netflix from other countries" on the deals page. so if anyone was looking for that…. im guessing you need another country login for Netflix?

    • +1

      another country login for Netflix

Nope! You use one set of Netflix credentials and based on where in the world you are it shows content

  • Seems like Shopback has silently changed the cashback to 70% and not 115%.

    @gotyourback - what's going on??

    • I bought last night when it showed 115% and actually thought I should screen shot it then said nah it'll be right…. Really hope they don't try and stitch me up at 70%

      • Just got tracking and it's showing 115% value so that's good

  • This deal is marked expired, but I just bought PIA through Shopback tonight (27th Nov 2021). Paid $109 and got $126.80 cashback notification.
