Private Internet Access VPN: 115% Cashback on Subscription Plans @ ShopBack

1007

Shopback is offering 115% cashback on Private Internet Access VPN plans. Options include:

  • $19.79 for 1 month
  • $109 for 3 Months + 3 years
  • $65 for 1 year
  1. Shopback are a total scam company and will pretty much never track your purchases (likely on purpose) and you will be required to go through a lengthy manual claim process that can take 120 days or longer for them to pay you back, sometimes they will just not bother doing it and will start ignoring you (see here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/606088#comment-10122323)
  2. PIA was a good VPN that was bought out by a scummy malware company (who also bought ExpressVPN and Cyberghost and lots of websites who do VPN reviews) and is now likely highly compromised. These charlatans have the gall to call themselves "The World's Most Trusted VPN", probably based on reviews they awarded to themselves.

That said, they are offering 115% cashback on your purchase which amounts to around 15 dollars to sell your information and waste your time.

So, knowing those things, proceed if you wish. shrug

    Love the honest description.
What are other VPN options that are as fast as PIA?

    • +2

Also keen to know! With a bunch of VPN companies possibly turning rogue, I'm not sure which way I should be turning!

    • +3

i went with Nord VPN - they are great and have a sale on right now - $110 AUF for 2 years and you can get 30% cashback

      • +1

        Boosted to 95% now.

      • +8

Aren't these guys even worse RE: Dodgy behaviour? Owned by Tesonet now… Would steer far and wide for anything you actually wanted to remain private.

        • +1

Everyone is dodgy now. Even Proton VPN are logging locations now by court order.

        • +4

Yes, privacy concerns after their parent company was caught selling customers data. Might be why they are offering to pay you to use it.

          • @chyawala: I just want to "community connect" C2C so to speak, which PIA does fast. Just don't like ShopBack.

    • +7

      Mullvad

    • +2

I've been with Windscribe for a few years, i'm sure there will be some comments about how they treat my information, but no I haven't had any issues with them. They sometimes have 3 year deals.

    • +5

Surfshark are ok plus they're not based in a five eyes country.

      • I have also heard good things about Surfshark. Probaby where i am going after my PIA subscription ends.

        • I have SS and I wont be renewing. I posted on another post the reasons why.

          • @antojamo: Im interested in seeing your reasoning, but can't find the other post in your history. Do you have a link?

            • @fenric:

              • Application can take several minutes to open. Tested on multiple PC's
              • Default configuration works most of the time, but sometimes it doesnt and you have to manually change what protocol it uses
              • Web pages randomly don't work. For example, im trying to watch Youtube now and the video wont start. Turn off the VPN off and it works right away. Other times page contents will not load properly
              • Inconsistent speed. Occasionally I get single digit Mbps down and Kbps up.. Turn VPN off and its back to 100/20M
    • I live in Melbourne and I did a big test with a bunch of different VPNS and server locations to find the fastest, you can see the full findings here: https://imgur.com/a/QNfacnu

Overall I found Mullvad and Nord to be pretty much neck and neck. Though if you live in Melbourne, Mull has the better Melbourne server.

I would proceed with extreme caution as on a closer look, it does not even seem that PIA offers 2 year subscriptions as was advertised but it does seem that the same offer would apply to the 3 year subscriptions which would equate to 16.35 cashback but I wouldn't put anything past Shopback to reject your claim.

    • Reading how horribly SB treated you, you still posted this mess involving two shady companies as a deal?

Your disclaimers alone make this an anti-deal.

      • +56

If I didn't, someone else would post it without the same disclaimers.

        • +1

Hella good point ! I respect your pov. Honestly at a loss whether I'm supposed to up or neg your warning deal though 😅

          • @paradoxez: Zilver…

He's the hero we need, but not the one we deserve.

        • -1

          Thank you for your service!

    • Any relation to Zilver chinese restaurant or do you just like its food?

    • +4

Similar deal happened months ago where it was 100% cashback. I got my cashback tracked without hassle. And this vpn is good for torrenting. I think you are a bit exaggerating. I had issue with sb before as well but they arent that bad.

      • +1

I got stung by SB last year when they got breached. Since then I get heaps of spam and cold calls.

  • +37

Friends don’t let friends get Kape Technologies products: https://restoreprivacy.com/kape-technologies-owns-expressvpn…

  • Would this still be fine for just general getting around Netfilx/youtube geo-blocking?

    • +4

Doesn't work for netflix since netflix started cracking down on vpn

      • +1

YMMV, PIA still works on Netflix for me.

    • +2

ExpressVpn was the only vpn provider that worked for me on netflix (decent speed and good support). However, I am not with it anymore. I wasn't able to get pia, nord, surf etc to work consistently for Netflix back then.

      • pia , keepsolid and windscribe worked for me.

    • +2

      nord vpn works with netflix
      PIA doesnt

      • +1

This is my experience as well. I've got a 3yr sub with both PIA and Nord (both through 100% shopback deals. Both have been paid out)

  • +15

Came to check the deal, stayed for the salty remarks.

  • +9

    Upvote for the description.

  • +11

14/14 cash back tracked and paid from shopback.
These threads always remind me of the bonus point CC threads: never once been rejected from any of the banks either after >20 cards.

    • I have 1000+ cashbacks totalling $3000+. In the recent 100 cashbacks, about 50 didn't track. They use to track 90-95% of the time.

Compared to cashrewards about 95% has been consistently tracked.

      • +2

Opposite for me, shopback tracks about 99% of the time and cash rewards tracks about 50% of the time and cash rewards also rejects like 90% of my claims as well

        • +1

I guess people have very different experiences with both CB and SB.

On the contrary to people's comments here, my experience with SB has been near perfect. On the other hand got effed over by CB & never used them again since.

So it's obvious,it's gonna happen [non-tracked purchases] with both these companies. The other choice is to only use them when you were going to buy regardless.

  • +4

The previous 100% worked for me. Not just tracked, cashed out to a bank account. Granted this does not say anything about how many other people didn't have it tracked.

    • Not using Shopback a lot. But I did just for the previous 100% PIA offer, and it worked: Tracked promptly. Approved on time. Withdrawn no issue.

  • If you have already used pia do you just setup with a new email for a new user. Last time I done a pia cashback it didn't track due to already being a user but hasn't used it for a couple of years

    • +2

Yeah, new email. I used it previously and signed up again with a new email, cashback confirmed without issues from the 110% deal a few months ago, ~$120 back from the $109 for 3 years offer.

      • Same shopback account?

        • I mean that I was a subscriber of PIA in the past; this was before I had signed up to any cashback sites.

    • Does using the Gmail +text in email also work as new email address??? That way I can add +pia2021 to my email to know when I subscribed.
But by doing this does it make it harder to get PIA to move previous account balance to new account as emails don't match?

  • +7

If a product is free then you are the product.

In this case, the product is not only free but you get money for using it. So what does that tell you about the product and yourself?

    • +2

      Sh!t.
Does it apply to "free" injections? LOL

  • +9

Seems a little harsh on shopback, I've had everything but an amazon sale day get tracked, and when they finally tracked it, they also paid out for the duplicate transaction that shouldn't have tracked. So I'm going to say they are just a little incompetent at times.

    • +4

Same here, rarely had an issue and if i did it was resolved pretty quickly

    • +4

yeah same, I'm up to $657 back from Shopback ($75 on CR), havent really had too many issues.

  • +1

I got the cashback on the last deal. There business model might be that they hope people forget to cancel it once the two years is up and pay full price? Just a thought as to why they are doing such a good free deal?

  • +8

Wow so much hate for Shopback, everything I purchased through the Shopback app has tracked perfectly and I have been paid out cash from them.

  • +2

    Shopback AND Private Internet Access/KapeTech?

Get your popcorn and wait for the salty tears to flow.

  • Better off getting the 3 years + bonus 3 months for $109.

  • +3

Re shopback: I've experienced a ton of mysterious rejections as well. Really starting to feel like they should be banned from ozb

    • I recently had a rejection from them that said I didn't click through the correct way for the purchase to track… I was using their own app so I'll be damned what I was supposed to do differently!!!

    • yeah, i purchased $700 router from wireless1 few weeks back and mine was rejected just saying seller rejected and that common bullet points lists was provided without any actual fact why it was rejected.

few months back purchased a mobile phone worth of $400 from banggood and exactly same situation. Rejected without providing any detail at all.

    • +3

Why should they be banned when there's loads of people that have never had an issue with them? Saved $100's with them.
Your experience does not reflect that of everyone.
Kind of sounds like user error.

      • +2

Must be a lot of 'user error' going around…

        • +3

That's what it sounds like. People using VPN's, adblockers, having items already added to cart or refreshing pages etc. Plenty of legitimate ways to invalidate your claim.
Just incredibly "odd" that many people have every 2nd claim rejected, whilst many more have never had a single claim rejected. The issue clearly isn't common to Shopback, rather some individuals.

      • +1

Your experience does not reflect that of everyone.

        But yours does?

        • sigh
If I was implying that my experience should reflect all then I'd be calling those with issues liars.

If the issue was with shopback and not users, then ALL users would experience these issues. But that's not the case. The issue seems to persist for some, but never for others, strongly implying the issue resides with differences in user habits. There are many disclosed ways to invalidate your cashback.

    • +2

Hey @Wafflel @Brightland & @rashed4004, would you be able to send me a DM with your ShopBack account email + some info on the rejections?
I'd be happy to take a look into it.

      Cheers!

  • +2

If you want a good reliable VPN service don't go with PIA. I've been with them for over 5 years and there service is terrible. Especially there Australian servers. Used to be good when I first signed up. I've still got 10 months left on my subscription. But like alot of people will be changing to a different VPN service once it expires.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/38pp6zj3?p=172

    • +2

I've been using for 5+ years too and with the exception of the SYDNEY server being awfully crap most of this year until a month or 2 back, my experience has been largely positive. I only use the windows and android clients, and only for certain use cases, but i do use it every day. Even when gaming sometimes. On Sydney and Melb servers for example atm i hit near on max of my 250mbps NBN speed. I also use Singapore and Japan regularly. That whirlpool thread is a bit of a dogs breakfast.

It's crappy that most of the big VPNs including PIA are now owned by those dodgy malware muppets but for my basic needs its still OK, unless they are handing over personalized (rather than anonymized) then my tin foil had has bigger fish to fry.

      • My experience with PIA reflects Xizor above.

  • +6

My shopback experience = 100% good. Much better than cashrewards in fact.

    • THEY TRACK THE SAME

      • +1

Nope, cash rewards never seems to track for me and reject most claims, never actually had an issue with shopback

      • NO THEY DON'T!

    • Opposite for me (and many others.)

  • Noob question: How is these VPN’s different to the one that Antivirus companies like Norton VPN and Kaspersky, Bit defender sells? Which one is trustworthy & reliable?
    Cheers

  • +2

Shopback are a total scam company and will pretty much never track your purchases (likely on purpose) and you will be required to go through a lengthy manual claim process that can take 120 days or longer for them to pay you back, sometimes they will just not bother doing it and will start ignoring you

Can't say I've had an issue with Shopback, and even taken up a >100% cashback on PIA offer before 🤷‍♂️

  • +2

Used to spend thousands through shopback.. Now only use them for gift cards. Way too many rejected claims

    • Hey @toobzy, if you'd like for me to assist you with a rejection please feel free to send me a DM.

  • +3

Everyone here bitching on Shopback probably also browses on a VPN w/ adblock enabled unironically.

    • +1

I learnt the hard way tracking does not often work when using VPN (both cashrewards and shopback). Purchases were small so minor lesson. Both work fine for me 95% of the time.

    • +4

This. They made it very clear that you must turn off adblock/VPN and stay on the website without navigating away. Make sure you add the item in cart one by one and not have a prefilled cart and checkout straight as it couldn't be tracked. Not to mention shopback usually does not work with coupons so most users here is guilty of doing one things I mentioned.

      • +3

lol you got negged because some dumb shits can't read and refuse to accept they're wrong.

    • The conspiracy around not tracking is it really did track but Shopback don't want to share the cashback. I think that's highly unlikely it's the refusuals to pay 2 or 3 months later for some ambiguous reason is the suspicious bit, that I feel they quite possibly are taking the full cashback

In my case used Shopback for 2 items , both tracked, and they paid out on both, approx $220

    • I actively make sure no VPN, no cookie blocking, still much better results with CR.

  • -1

Still waiting for Shopback to pay keeps saying processing since last month won't be using Shopback for bigger cashbacks again

    • +3

It remains pending until the merchant clears it (time varies from merchant to merchant)… there should be an "Available by" date. If still processing beyond that then you've got a problem…

      • -2

I got a problem looks like Shopback is not responding to my request for answers

        • +2

What date does the "Available By" say? It's a largely automated business, you don't need to reach out to them.

    • Hey @Babban, could you send me a DM with your account email so I can take a look at this for you?

  • All challenge I participated failed because ShopBack not tracking. Only reason I use Sb because u can shop using such as aliexpress app on mobile phone which is more convenient than cashreward. But it's useless if they don't track sometime

  • +1

i got the cashback on 110% promo few months back. havent use the vpn much actually

  • +3

Using Shopback since 2018 and never had any of my cashbacks fail LOL. Same for Cashrewards. Disabling all other chrome extensions and anti-virus was the only step I took before activating Shopback.

    • +3

Same. Used for years and never had a problem. Only ever had issues with Cashrewards but most of those paid out too.

  • +1

Best sales pitch so far for the day!

  • +5

most accurate description of shopback ever written

  • Edgy!

  • +2

Shopback confirmed my cashback from a previous 100%+ deal with both PIA and Nord. Both are now in my bank account. Would highly recommend.

I was very happy with Nord (and still am) but the constant updating and frequently requiring me to sign in again has been a minor inconvenience. PIA has been just as stable and fast so I use that mostly now.

I will say Nord has never given me any issues with Netflix in any country. Works perfectly.

Pia on the other hand doesn't work with Netflix at all.

    • +1

hope Nord can also offer 115%
