    • These 5g deals sound awesome.
Especially when ur landlord wont pay the NBN connection fee.
Currently on optus 4g 500gb p/m, avergae speed is 20-30 mbps.
Looks like il be switching over to a 5g plan with telstra soon

Why should your landlord pay the connection fee? Do you ask your land lord to clean your toilet too?

        • Landlord should be paying the NBN connection fee

          • @shaibankek2: everyone iv asked says the same thing..
            but my landlord wont budge,
so these wireless plans are ideal

            • @minatosensei: Why don't you create a win-win proposal for both and offer to pay half?

              • @Buy2Much: Because if the other connection options are no longer available, the landlord should pay in full.

            • @minatosensei: I didn’t realise there’s a connection fee?
We had to get our apartment connected (renting) and the landlord didn’t have to pay anything. We spoke with our ISP and they just needed proof (email trial) that our landlord and strata/body Corp approved because they needed to do some drilling from outside apartment to inside and pass the cable through to a coax port.

We didn’t pay anything nor did our landlord. It did take forever for the NBN subcontractors to get it all going but they were paid by NBN.

      • surely the connection fee is less than $550

anyway just take them to QCAT/VCAT whatever, that's free

        • It's not, it's a $60 fee for instigating the hearing.

          • @Pixie13: It’s $whatever amount your landlord will raise your rent by come renewal time for instigating their anger.

          • @Pixie13: if i had no other option for internet use at home, then i may have investigated further.
but the wireless plans work around this, a 500gb download limit is ok for a single person like myself

            • @minatosensei: I was referring to the fact that taking a landlord to VCAT isn't free - I completely sympathise with your situation. I wish you all the best in the future.

        • It may be the wish of OZBs for the landlord to pay for the connection (judging by how many nags I got from raising this issue above).

The law did not require the land lord to provide the connection though
          https://www.tenants.org.au/factsheet-23-utilities

          • @syswong: Exactly right. I had the same experience few years ago. The property manager would advise the landlord what they must provide by law so the landlord cannot say no if it’s his responsibility. Which was why I suggested a win-win proposal of half each. Everyone would be happy and maintain a good relationship.

    • Didn’t they have 1tb for $85 a few days ago? I can only see $75 for 400g.

      • Different plan. That is home internet, for a fixed address. This is mobile internet, so you can take the dongle elsewhere.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/661107 for the $85 plan.

        • You sure it is for a fixed address? I cannot take that 5g modem to a different house?

          • @Rifulreinhardt: https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/broadband/5g-hom…

Can I use the 5G modem at another location?

No. Your 5G modem is locked to your property’s location, which means you can only use it to access our 5G network while it is at that address. In other locations, your speeds will be capped at 1.5Mbps or slowed further in busy periods.

            • @futaris: Thanks, that’s bad. I have a Optus 4g and I’m moving soon. Assuming it will not be capped at the new place.

            • @futaris: Hmm - the smaller Huawei 5G modem I got from JB-Hi-Fi on a 300 Gb plan doesn't have that limitation - then again as far as the network time is concerned, it thinks it's in Victoria anyway…

              • +1

@terrys: Jb hifi only sell mobile internet on 4G/5G. Telstra will sell home internet on 5G.

                • @futaris: Ah, that explains it. Thanks. I hope they don't mind me using it at home. $59 [ with $10 deal discount] for 300 GB that I never fully use beats $85 for a terabyte, but gamers, streamers and families stuck with FTTN MTM or worse would be better served and could use Telstra Air away from home.

    • +1

Telstra has a long history of taking fair to excellent devices and then turning them into garbage by installing their own mandatory firmware.

The firmware will do things like disable manual DHCP or limit IP leases to 24 hours, basic router things.

      • Spend ~5mins configuring it in bridge mode and connect it to a proper router. I run the M2 as a failover for my NBN connection with a data share SIM. It works great.

        • I’ve had an M1 Nighthawk hooked up to my parents router for six months, works great. 4GX at their house is far better that the satellite connection they were on.

  • Does anyone know if this locked to Telstra?

    • +3

Paid $180 from last deal, it is unlocked.

  • So the minimum is $130 + $20 plan = $150 for the 1st month. Then I take it we cancel the sim plan?

    • yes, cancel after one month, if you don't have any Telstra service.

  • So the orbi 4gx router is unlocked and can work with any other data-only sims correct? Like if I go with Vodafone?

Also, any one have recommendations for good plans that I can put in my home to use as internet (single person, studio, daily streaming/light gaming/zoom meetings)? Telstra’s $20 for 30gb a month seems too little but the next step up is $55 for 75gb and at that price point ($55 + $10 a month for the router for 12 months term = $65) I reckon there are potentially better options (eg. Nbn) than a 4g broadband network.

    • +1

      Yup. Already using Vodafone.

    • $45/65GB with woollies (with up to 300GB databank)
There’s also reference to a mythical $49/80GB plan which is offered occasionally(?)

  • Can I buy a $2 telstra Sim at Woolies/Coles to get a "service with Telstra" and access this offer?

  • Good deal for the modem, stack with $75/month for 24 months offer.

  • So 4GX doesn't have 5G?

  • If the satellite isn’t needed, Is this 4g modem an upgrade or downgrade from netgear M1?

  • Been sniffing at 4g modem/routers for my FiL. Any thoughts on how this would compare to a tplink mr600? Or even mr6400? And does Telstra bank data?

    • having this and mr6400. Netgear is much faster. MR600 is Cat 6. however, it takes long time to setup if you change to switching different telco.

  • +1

    mr600 is cat 6 only
    mr6400 cat 4 ???
    LBK1220 is CAT18 i say clear winner

  • Purchased a 4GX with the satellite. Now I have to work out how to set it up as a failover for my HFC NBN service which goes down quite a few times each month. I am hoping it is easy enough for a network noob like me! I currently have a Tp-link X20 mesh router (2 x further satellites) that is plugged into the NTD from NBN. Have looked at the Netgear Orbi manual but it is 100+ pages and refers to setting up fail over a few times. Wish me luck!

  • Walked into a store to look at the product (bigger than I expected). Paid $130 and got it outright. Happy. Thx OP.

  • so whats the difference between
    Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro

and the 4GX and the nighthawk 5g?

from my understanding the last two are not portable but would they be dramatically faster?

  • i will chat to telstra as i want to use the 200 GB on my phone plan with the Nighthawk 5g if i buy it. dont want to pay for extra data

    • How did this go did you get an extra Sim that data shares your existing mobile?

  • +1

So I successfully set this up with my HFC NBN as a automatic failover to 4G and all works great. A little slow to switch between the two but it generally is around 2 minutes. The satellite was DOA with corrupt firmware so I tossed it as was never going to use it anyway. I have TP-Link x20 wifi 6 system which still is in access mode now. Interesting that the Orbi now running as the router actually maxes out my NBN speed must have a better chip in it or something. I used to get 70/25 with the TP-Link x20 and now get 100/30 with the Orbi. All working great. Also confirm that it is not locked as using a Vodafone sim.

  • Couldn't order online for some reason (kept giving me an address error when I logged into my account), so picked one up in store today.
