[macOS] iStat Menus 75% off - Single Licence US$3.29 (~A$4.57) @ Bjango

1020

I've been using iStat Menus for years to get things like CPU usage, memory usage and data speeds in my menubar. Using a Mac feels naked without it installed!

It's only US$3.29 for a single licence, or $4.12 for a family licence that lets you use it on 5x Macs.

Not sure when the offer runs out.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2021

  • Given their frequent paid major updates, this might be more like an annual license in effect

    • What does that mean? Is this not a one-off payment? Are they changing to a subscription model?

      • +8

        It means that

Given their frequent paid major updates, this might be more like an annual license in effect.

You are buying a licence for the current version. Not a licence for all future versions.

    • +9

I just checked and last time I paid was in 2017 for ver 6 - which is still current. So 4+ years so far isn't bad.

      • Ok fair point, at one time one of their update cycles was close, and I was a little annoyed - this time is better.
But I wonder how long till the next major one - can’t be too long

        • +4

          It's $5.

          • +1

@jubjub: But we are a bunch of tight arses here. :-P

In all seriousness, that $5 is worth every penny in the quality of software that Marc and his team makes.

  • +2

Good software! Agree with decryption that not having it installed feels wrong.

  • @OP do you know how their license works if I need to change my machine? like can I register the new machine with same license or need to buy a new license?

    • +3

It's less $5! Support Australian software developers.

Or buy a family license for an extra $1, and don't use them all.

    • +3

I bought a lic yonks ago, never had an issue adding it to new Macs I've purchased over the years

    • +2

I've used the same licence on multiple Macs over the years.

  • Thanks OP, good find.
This is the first thing that goes onto my Macs - brilliant software.

  • Is the app quite lightweight itself?

    • +2

I just checked and the Daemon and app are using ~40MB ram each (on a 32GB system, so they may constrain further on a lower spec machine) and CPU is using between 1.5 - 2% of a core (M1 Max).
Over the years I've never really noticed it and I watch my system a lot.

Thanks, bought, now I just need to wait for Bartender4 on sale :D new MBP's notch takes too much menubar space!

    • Yes! been running the Bartender trial over the past couple of weeks and makes it sooo much better. I still can't believe how Apple has implement this. I'm not complaining about the extra screen space and smaller bezel, just that menu items (VPNs etc) simply disappear and you can't even click on where they should be…. (enough whinging from me..!)

    • +2

just need to wait for Bartender4 on sale

Hidden Bar is free on the Mac Appstore

    • Haha my sentiments exactly, new to Macs and need something to fill up the top menu bar!

  • +2

I like their consume app for iOS. Pity they stopped that app a long time ago.

    • Yeh I did too! Back in the early iPhone days lol ahhh the memories!

    • I still have screenshots of the app in my phone. The UI was brilliant at that time.

    Brilliant. Thankyou!

    • iStat Menu shows more. One of them being disk / file transfer speed. Also seem to get a lot more sensor information. RunCat is good though.

      • One of them being disk / file transfer speed

I swear I purchased something already that does this when I was in need of that info, haven't used in ages, can't remember what it was.

  • Sorry I'm fairly new to the mac world (Loving my MBP 14!)

Am I better off purchasing this from the website linked or from the App Store which seems to be listing it at $4.49?

    • +3

Depends, if you only have personal Mac devices, then App Store might be easier (especially you could have some Apple store credit from Apple gift cards).

If you have work Mac devices, then you may not want to login to your personal Apple Store account on the work mac, then a static license might be easier.

I bought the family pack and I was happy to buy direct from the developer's site… I figured they don't have to pay Apple that 30% commission.

      • Excellent appreciate your reply, that's a good point about separating the purchase from a personal account. Still getting my head around why some apps are in the app store while some are website only and what's the best practices for ensuring updates etc but I'll go with the static licence purchase for this one.

    • +1

I prefer buying from the developer directly - more money in their pocket because they don't need to pay Apple's 30% commission.

  • thanks ops. Just got one. And I am officially off the pirate train on this app. :D

    • But you are still on the train with other apps/softwares ?

  • Nice app. Is there an equivalent for windows?

  • Does the single use license allow me to activate it on another Mac and 'de-register' it off a previous Mac?

    • +1

It's $1.15 extra to get the multi licence, just do that.

  • +4

There is also a very similar open source alternative: https://github.com/exelban/stats that is quite comparable to iStats.
But I'd buy iStats to support the developers who are Aussie :)

  • +1

Great software. I use it for BOM weather in the menubar which does require annual fee, not an auto renewal, starting at $3.80 per year:
    https://bjango.com/help/istatmenus6/weather/

It's not updated that frequently and definitely doesn't feel like a pseudo subscription. I bought v6 two years ago and haven't been charged for updates. Version 7 probably will be.

Unfortunately since Big Sur, iStats doesn't support MacOS widgets:
    https://bjango.com/help/istatmenus6/knownissues/

The design matches their iOS weather app Snowflake <- which is also on Black Friday sale (and requires subscription for access to BOM data):
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/snowflake-weather/id1387828969…

  • Thanks OP!
Purchased, was only looking at istat menu the other day.

https://github.com/exelban/stats - this is an open-source project under MIT license that was initially created by a young software engineer from Ukraine, Serhiy Mytrovtsiy. He gets astonishing 9$ (NINE) per months on hist Patreon to support the development. My money goes to him this time. Especially in the current circumstances when Russia gathered an army to invade Ukraine (Bloomberg report, CIT report).

I installed this, iMac running 10.13.6 and it has frozen twice, if I mouse over it, I get spinning wheel of death.
Using 101% of my CPU and not responding, will have to restart again and see if i can remove it.

  • Got one. Thanks OP!

  • One of the first things I install on a new Mac. Good deal!

    • What else do you install on a new Mac?

      • Well it's need-specific, but it would be the Affinity Suite for graphic design.

  • Had trouble getting through but after about 12 goes it worked …. thanks OP :)

  • Thanks, I got it.

  • I feel like I need this after reading all the comments!

  • +4

Why not try stats, does the same thing, but free and open source.

    • +2

There is eul as well which I use on my home and work mac.

      • I've used both eul and Stats (concurrently even). eul unfortunately occasionally uses 100% CPU when I haven't seen Stats do the same. Shame too because I do like eul.

  • +2

not sure why I bought it but I bought it.

  • I went on to buy Snowflake, their weather app for $1.49 but it's just a rehash of the BOM data without the radars! If you want radars it's another $6 per year ….. Not happy Jan!

    • Of course your usage might be different, but the official BOM app is out of the running for me since it doesn’t have a Watch app or a Home Screen widget.

      • I feel their pitch on the App Store is bait n switch. The standard version shows pics of various radars alongside of other screens that do come with the regular version. It's only when you go back and look at the small text that Bjango put on the radar pics that they are only available with the "Plus"version for anothe $6 per year!

  • Thanks OP. Bought!

  • Nice share OP…been using Macs for a while now and somehow never heard of this app - "where have you been all my life?".

  • Activity Monitor gives basic info - for those who use restricted work MacBooks

  • Perfect. Been waiting for this to go on sale. Now I just need the bartender app too.
