  • What is it, cheap USB day or something?

  • +2

I bought one of many different universal mobile battery chargers and it comes with USB port to charge too. $2.84 DELIVERED on eBay or any of those China online shops. So this is a thumbs down from me.

    • Sorry Op, but I agree it seems very expensive.
I bought a dual-port usb charger for ~$5 delivered late last year,

      I suppose they're "surge protected" & have a pass-thru power adaptor

      and OW is $20 for 1 http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Pow…

    • To be fair some of the cheapo chinese usb chargers are really woeful . My wifes phone goes crazy when charging with one very cheap charger and my sons tablet becomes unusable when plugged into some cheap chargers .

  • I won't neg the deal as it's not the exactly the same type of device (eg. no pass through and only 1 USB port for charging) but these type of things can be has much, much cheaper (1 x $2.60 US inc. delivery) elsewhere! As "Popo" said "China online shops" ;)

    • Good luck with the China products. I have not been so lucky with my China purchases and do not want to damage my expensive Apple devices to save a dollar. Is there a simple way to check the output of these Chinese devices we are buying on eBay? I don't believe mine is putting out what they suggest.

The output is insufficient to charge an iPad which needs 2.1 amps rather than 1 amp. I just discovered that issue two days ago. So this is a neg from me as it seems the rep does not know its own products. Also, a dual charger with the 2.1 output costs 11.99 on e-bay with delivery included(from Australia, safety-certified).

I actually use one of these products personally to charge an iPad, so I can tell you that it works with them :)

      • Sorry mate you cannot fool me. It works but takes a long time. Check the specifications - electrical measurements do not lie. Ask any IT expert but if you can read you can check it on the Apple page, the Apple forums, anywhere really.

        • +3

Correct, I won't argue that it takes longer to charge @ 1 Amp compared to 2.1, however that is quite different to what you said above when you commented that it was "insufficient to charge an iPad".

I'm actually an electronics engineer in a past life, so I hope I have a bit of a clue about this :)

Well, when you plug it in the iPad says "Not charging" - I do call that insufficient. Also, if it takes like 12 hours rather than 4 hours - again it is insufficient. Insufficient is not equal to "does not work". Many people's work is insufficient (especially Enron & Co) but that does not mean they do not work at all, right? :-)
Sorry that I am a word twister and seem pedantic but that is my job and I am proud to say that I am rather good at it.

        • That is certainly not something that I have seen using any of the Jackson products (on the iPad 1, 2 and 3), I can't speak for any other products on the market though.

    • The Jackson brand is a known mid range brand that is also sold in Bunnings. You can not compare these to the Chinese ones found on eBay - the 2cheapies I have bought on eBay were in the bin the first week. Based on RRP this is actually a reasonable deal. Postage kills it for me though. These do charge an ipad, though at 1A it would be slower so not ideal. The packaging even suggests it is for the iPad. The issue is Jackson should highlight on the packaging it would be slower at 1A over 2.1A. Most chargers people have issues with with ipads are the common 0.5A. So with this in mind it would be a good spare charger for your iphone and an emergency for the iPad. The Jackson charger is designed properly so should not show the "Charging not supported" you may have seen on other chargers. Mine works fine and I have never seen an issue. So reasonable deal, but buyer beware if you want to charge an ipad.

I have even tried a charger with the correct output but made by Dell. Guess what - the iPad2 recognised that it was a Dell product and still refused to charge. "Charging is not supported with this device".
Sorry but I stick with the correct output for $12 incl. delivery.

As I said above, I can't speak for any other products on the market, but I can say that the Jackson ones do work. Without getting into too much technical detail, a USB charger has to provide an appropriate "handshake" signal to the connected device that explains the capabilities of the charger. If an appropraite signal is not given, then some products (including the Apple range) simply won't accept a charge.
