Emby Premiere Lifetime Subscription US$99 (~A$138.50), Was US$119 @ Emby

80

Been holding out for Emby Premiere seeing how Plex is dying a slow death. Finally refreshed and saw the Black Friday deal. Get in quick as I think it's this weekend only.

Monthly and yearly plans are still the same price.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2021

If you're not going to use Plex, why not just use Jellyfin? It's a fork of Emby when the Emby developers decided to make the project closed source.

    • Might check it out first. The feature list I was using to compare was a year old it turns out and it seems Jellyfin has more features now.

      • I think I read the same one as you and thought Emby would be the better choice.

Have you found an updated list or care to share some of your findings?

Since your OP what did you decide on after your research and why?

        • Haven't tried Jellyfin yet but have installed it to test tonight. Straight up I prefer the layout and buttons for Emby over Plex but there are features in the free version of Plex that Emby doesn't have (eg. shuffle play is a premiere subscription for Emby). Will give Jellyfin a bit of a shot over the weekend but if it doesn't live up to Emby I'll buy a sub.

Well I went and played with Jellyfin and it appears just as good as Emby. Already got mum setup to sync my library from her place via the Jellyfin addon with OSMC, plus I've got it setup on my phone as well. Seems to work perfectly fine.

          • @Tacooo: Thanks for the update.

From a few quick videos it looks like Jellyfin would do most of what I want it to (haven’t had a chance to test either).

Due to how infrequent it gies on sale I just bough it and will test them both a bit later this year.

From my research what I can see JF has going for it, is that it is built on the last open source version of Emby.

The devs are meant to be more community driven and very responsive to requests and user input, Emby is more responsive but can shut users out and Plex seems to be the worst when it comes to fixings issues, bugs or adding in features.

Why is plex dying? Just curious to know.

    • Plex seems to be focusing on things its users don't actually want.

      • +2

There are some features it has implemented over the last couple of years that are a bit meh for me and I'll probably never use (e.g. plex movies), but is it missing features that users are screaming out for, though?

I was amazed when they integrated TV series intro detection into the platform. Some actual streaming services don't even offer that i.e. paramount +

        • but is it missing features that users are screaming out for, though?

Yes. A very big yes. bug reports and feature requests get ignored for years. The Android app has been severely gimped forever. some subtitles still force transcoding for example.

Plex is a media service, that is so focused on adding new features, that they neglect keeping the basics working properly.

        • Yeah, it's had enough features for me for about 10 years now. In fact I wish they'd stop touching it.

    • They've been ignoring user requests for years and moving to a more commercial model with their live TV crap that dominates the interface.

      • with their live TV crap that dominates the interface.

        Where?

        • +2

Probably talking about the new user (or app) experience. You're showing the interface AFTER hiding away the other content. Initially, it's a very confusing and weird experience that prioritises the plex movie content over your own libraries. You have to pin your libraries, and unpin the default ones.

Clicking what doesn't apply to you isn't difficult.

            • +2

              @Axelstrife:

              1. You give your mother access to plex
              2. She sees this screen - and she doesn't know what to tick (How is she supposed to know what are your libraries and what are the plex ones)
              3. Now her plex interface is cluttered with this plex movie stuff with content she'd never want to watch.

Add on the complaints of ads when something from the plex movie stuff is played.

You then have to walk her through how to customize her interface on the phone.

@mahdoo: If they are so incompetent that they cannot read and follow the VERY simple on screen instruction then maybe technology is not for them, it's literally check boxes select what you don't want.

                • +4

@Axelstrife: You clearly haven't shared your plex library with many people :P

                  • -1

@mahdoo: Make their account for them and tell them to reset password. Next!

                    • @askbargain: Settings are a per app thing. Plex don't give server owners control over client apps..

                  • -1

@mahdoo: You have some insanely incompetent people in your life if you are serious that they cannot even untick a few boxes.

                    • +2

@Axelstrife: It's not about unticking them. Look at the screenshot and tell me how you're supposed to know what each library is.

Plex needs to add at least an owner in brackets next to them

                      (Plex)
                      (Username)

Or something. It's designed in a deliberately confusing way to prevent people from automatically unticking them.

Seriously, share your library with your friends and you'll notice how lazy regular people are. If it's not obvious, it's not going to be done. Most people don't even bother to go into their settings and configure their remote viewing quality. You're expecting too much from normal people.

                      • @mahdoo: Untick all except the first two.

^ All it takes in once sentence via text, email or over the phone.

I do share my plex library.

                      • @mahdoo:

I completely agree, and for this reason I wouldn't share my Plex library with these folk. Just let them sort out their own content 🤷‍♂️

It's not a Plex issue and it's not your issue either !

  • Am I the only one hearing these words for the first time?
Really curious if can subscribe to one of these and get rid of Netflix/PrimeVideo etc.

    • This is explained in every Plex deal. Look back at past Plex deals to find the answer to your question. Emby is very similar to Plex, so the same applies.

    • This is not an application to serve you media from other streaming services. This is a media player for files you have stored locally. Great for people sailing the high seas.

        Aye me matey!

  • +3

Highly rate Emby… so easy to setup and no training of end users ( family and MIL ) makes it a big win in my book… Looks better that PLEX imho…

    • Agree - Emby is brilliant.

  • I had always read Emby price to be $99 I guess I was looking at US pricing.

As someone who has not been following the price trends closely but looking at recent feedback Emby seems to be preferred over Plex some questions:

What is the typical lowest price this goes on sale for?

Why get Premier? (A lot of comments seem to suggest free is just fine)

How well does it handle 4K HDR transcoding?

Do you need Premier to transcode (like Plex)

Are the transcode system requirements similar to Plex i.e. will it run well on a 920+?

I think it makes sharing your library much easier? Which is good because I want to share my library with family.

Comments from peoples experience migrating from Kodi are appreciated as well.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Having tried Plex, Jellyfin and Emby I can say that Emby works the best. Plex and Jellyfin both had player issues playing a video. Emby did not and has not ever given me an error. Plex and Jellyfin have both thrown an error saying video cannot be played.

    I have purchased this.

    • They surely have their differences when they all use mpv!

    • Thanks for the feedback, most of the information I have found online especially YouTube is outdated and long videos that do not get to the point.

I can’t even get a straight answer on if “Premier” gets you better transcoding like Plex pass or not.

      • I can answer this one. Premier gets you hardware transcoding and HDR tone mapping to start off with.

        • Thanks, have no idea why that is so hard to find from a quick google search but it seems if your serious about giving people remote access to your library you’ll need HW transcode.

I would only stream HDR and 4K content on my local network so I’m not sure how HDR tone mapping works? Is it only for remote streams, I thought if your hardware supports it on a local network no transcoding is required and it plays the files natively (will be using a 2019 Shield Pro)?

Or is it for hardware that can’t support it natively for playback?

EDIT: wait I just realised HDR tone mapping where it colour corrects HDR content on the fly for non HDR TVs, right?

  • So if you pay up for Emby Premiere, one of the features you get is 'Free Apps' lol.

    • Some of the apps have limitations that require either inapp purchase or premiere

  • I went Plex having tried Plex, Emby and Jellyfin, mostly due to some more enhanced features for sharing content on average network connections. My missus was working in Japan, and only Plex was capable of streaming Live TV via xTeve or any hosted content without stalling or dropping out completely. That pretty much clinched it for me. Both the iOS and Android apps do what we need them to as well, and there's an app for our LG TV, Telstra TV, etc, so seamless end user experience.

Does emby get cheaper. I have lifetime Plex but was wondering about getting an emby as well just in case I change over in the future.

  • Lifetime = life time of the version, not life time of the user.

    • You're getting confused with j-river ;-)

      • That's a name I've not heard in a long time.
