Low-Earth Orbit Satellite Internet (up to 370Mbps/51.6Mbps) $139/Month + $809 Hardware Delivered @ Starlink (Excludes NT)

3780

I have checked address
[NSW][VIC][SA][WA][TAS][QLD][ACT] I've tried all these addresses and only [NT] Northern Territory was not covered so this is basically Australia Wide.
QLD and WA only seems to cover some areas right now.

Elon Musk’s space venture - Starlink is now available for orders now!

Starlink is a satellite internet service providing high-speed, low latency broadband internet with speeds from 50Mb/s to 400Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms. Early users are reporting speeds of 300Mbps+.

I've been checking every month and its now out of preorder for 99% of Australian addresses

You will need to pay $809 for hardware ($709 satellite dish +$100 shipping) and a $139/month service fee.

This looks like an attractive option for those on NBN satellite. Also can be worthwhile to replace a slower NBN connection due to the exorbitant prices for a NBN FTTP upgrade.

Starlink is now out of beta, and max speeds have doubled from 150mbps to 250mbps+ for most reviewers I saw on Youtube
"As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations and improve our networking software, data speed, latency and uptime will improve dramatically."

As a point of reference, the best speeds I have seen on Youtube achieved on Starlink in Australia are
Download: 370 Mbps
Upload: 51.6 Mbps
Ping: 20 ms

    • Which video ?

    • He also admitted after this that he didn’t allow long enough for the service to settle in as some viewers commented.

      • Hi signed up for an early Beta what did he expect. Like they intend to deploy 10k Satellites!!

    • My God, the salt in those comments.

  • +10

All the smoothbrains on FTTP in this comment section talking about how they wont switch.

No shit you wont. Its not for you. Its for the (profanity) who voted in our current government that became unlucky enough to get stuck with shitty internet and everyone else dragged along with em.

It’s like saying I’m on 200k a year job I don’t know what the problem is. Is money really a problem? Can’t people just go get a better job?

I feel once Musk has his 10,000 satellites up there, and Bezos sends up his couple of thousand, and then whatever China got cooking, they're gonna start crashing into each and by the end of the decade, we won't have any satellites at all…

If you are communicating with satellites then does this mean you by-pass Government meta-data tracking?

Digital Sky Litter. IMO, and there is far too much space junk floating around the earth if you ask me.

While this may sound off topic, check this link out, over time the compounding effects of sky junk will gradually take its affects upon some or all of us.

  • Not available all areas. Mine is apparently sometime in 2022.

  • Is this suitable now or in the future for mobile usage i.e. remote travellers?

  • Anyone have any thoughts as to whether the cost of this might come down over time as the economies of scale increase?

    • The new smaller square dishes are supposed to be cheaper than the original round dishes.

      • Yeah there's the upfront equipment cost, I'm mindful though of the monthly cost

  • No luck in Macedon Ranges 😞

  • Starlink expects to expand service in your area by mid 2022. You will receive a notification once your Starlink is ready to ship.

    Bugga.

    • I had the same error. Check addresses around you moving outwards. The geoblocking is about 10 miles per cell for (in imperial units). I did that for an address about 4km away — not even an address, just a street. And it let me place the order.

Then after I placed the order I was able to move the service to my house and it updated straight away.

This is of course dependent on the amount of subscribers in the area. Once you move to a new area you might not be able to move back to the old one at least for the time being, helpful to know for grey nomads. Although Elon said this is changing "this year"… Then again he also said my Tesla would be FSD 2 years ago…

I've had Starlink for a few months now.. Previously could only get satellite NBN out here and no one offered unlimited services.
I've had no problems so far, and it's just on the ground, haven't installed it on the roof as yet.

    • -1

First of all, we don't give a s**** about you showing off your current internet speed and setup.

Your question about satellite vs your existing fixed nbn connection make no sense, and you clearly don't understand what satellite is aiming for.

      • -7

You got upset and abusive for my connection package.
Talking about technology and jealous, this is showing off? You twisted mind.

    • +3

if the wfh trends persist in long run, probably i will think of buying a holiday house bit further away from cities and current satellite technology clearly make this choice far more easier than before.

      • Give this man a gold stars, think outside the box. I like it.

    Metro Brisbane here.

Does Elon Musk have to fix every Australian government failure?

    • He doesn’t have to, but he has form. After SAs big blackout he did a deal to build the Big battery in 100 days (or free). This has been a big success for SA power.

He’s no fool though… he has reduced the development cost of Starlink by building rockets to give NASA payload. I am guessing he’ll eventually amass more fortune from Starlink than anything else, particularly as we head towards 6G…

  • Anyone with experience with this in north west brisbane?

    • Won't be available in Brisbane until next year

      • Thanks

    • Only some addresses in Brisbane were available when I checked better to check yourself on the website or YouTube reviews in Brisbane

  • If you're one of those Elon Musk haters on reddit, make sure to boycott this product!

    Otherwise, you're just a hypocrite.

    • +3

Elon Musk is a tool. No doubt about it.

    • +1

I don't intend on giving Musk a single cent even if it would mean better internet.

      • But your comment is so wonderful, and this thread will be being read by Starlink users all around the world. Therefore you are increasing the popularity of the internet to Starlink users, and indirectly increasing Elon Musk's wealth! His wallet thanks you!

    • You think he's got these in his pockets and he's just dropping them like litter when he rides his battery-powered sky-dick into space?

Its the same story as always, Elon isn't the inventor, the engineer, and most of the time not even the bankroll for these projects.

He didn't invent PayPal, they bought his company out.

He didn't invent Tesla, he bought out and downplayed the original owners.

      He didn't invent tunnel boring.

And he for damn sure isn't the one launching spaceships and satellites by himself.

He's just another rich (profanity) whose companies are achieving things.
There is always a huge teams of unknown scientists and engineers doing the legwork, not some rich apartheid white-boy who started out life part-owning a goddamn emerald mine.

LEO internet delivery is the nail in the coffin for human survival on Earth.

Tens of thousands of rocket launches are planned in the next decade, each emitting more fossil fuel than running a large SUV for 200 years continuously.

The process is ongoing as LEO sats requiring constant boosting until they run out of fuel whereupon they fall out of the sky and require another rocket launch to replace them.

NASA says the Earth will likely no longer support human life within 50 to 200 years with the mostly likely date being 2150.

According to Musk, the reason for SpaceX providing internet is to fund holidays for the wealthy on Mars.

Oh and wireless internet is hopeless.

    • +1

"NASA says the Earth will likely no longer support human life within 50 to 200 years"

Citation please. Show me the link where a NASA study states the Earth may be unsuitable to support human life as soon as 2071. And we're not talking about a city flooding somewhere or becoming too hot to inhabit. The claim is humanity will die out.

      • It's just common sense. Covid will mutate to a point where you will be infected just by thinking about it. This strain will be vaccine and immune resistant so you will keep catching it untill humanity dies out. This strain will take 50 to 200 years to evolve. Simples.

        • Now silly as it sounds that makes sense from an anti vax point of view because the power of positive thinking can keep you healthy so the opposite must be true!

    • +1

Each Falcon launch produces around the same C02 as around 75 cars use per annum. Thats the kerosene burn.
Methane is possibly the fuel for the next few decades, this nominally is around 20% less c02 production. Split the diff and average it out as say 60 cars per annum per launch.

Fortuantely the rate of adoption of electric cars and associated retirement of ICE engines is several orders of magnitude offset to this 60 cars per annum per launch rate, even at your grossly exaggerated "tens of thousands of launches".

Just do some basic math and stop fearmongering.

    • +1

If you really want to save the earth don’t drive your car and don’t take holidays. Otherwise you’re just another hypocrite.

    • This is clearly all made up. Please list some sources.

Starlink is revolutionary and will be a fantastic option for many Australians, but… a word of caution.

It's really fast now, when hardly anyone is using it. Once half a million Australians are using it for downloads and games, I bet quite a few will be complaining about latency and slow downloads.

    • +2

Possibly. Then again I suspect they may manage that issue better than the Australian government did with NBN

    • It's not revolutionary as a technology for certain and it's not commercially viable or will ever be. But rumour is it has different uses and that will keep it around.

      • It's not revolutionary as a technology for certain

What other options are there for fast satellite internet at $139/month with a $709 terminal?

  • +4

I'm sending this from an NBN satellite link and the ping was 593ms… Ouch!

Some Aussies will benefit from this.

  • I can't find any mention of how much data you get for that monthly fee. Am I missing something?

    • Unlimited

  • No deal, regular price, I paid the deposit over 1 year ago and still waiting.

    • Yes it's out of preorder for 90% of Australia

  • There is no need to promote starlink. People who need it will seek it out themselves as they know there are no other alternatives thanks to how short sighted the government is.

Also with the NBN gravy train disappearing, lots of companies are advertising “professional starlink installations” with “Aussie made” products.

Unfortunately with the lack of innovation in Australia you always get a lot of businesses wanting to make easy money off other countries’ products.

    • +1

Not everyone knows it's available now

  • +1

Will the radiation from the satellite give me covid ?

    • +4

Not if you keep wearing your tinfoil hat

    • Lol btw you’re missing /s

  • All these people mention ping rate, which doesn't mean anything if you don't say what server your pinging (and more importantly, "distance" to the server). Your nearest PoP (Point of Presence) for the internet provider needs to be mentioned as well, as that'll be where your connection goes from your provider to the outside world, and determines the perceived "distance" to the server. The closer the PoP (which is apparently in Sydney for Starlink) is to the server your pinging, the more accurate the speed/ping will be to the theoretical maximum of your connection. Simply testing with a server physically closest to you will give inaccurate results, especially in situations where the connection goes somewhere else entirely (in this case, literally out of this world)

For example, I'm in Geraldton on FTTP but I get a better ping to a Perth server as that's the nearest PoP for Superloop. Pinging a server here in Geraldton is higher as it goes to Perth then back to Geraldton.

If anything, post a traceroute as well to provide the best accuracy on how good the connections are with a provider, then you can see how many times your connection is redirected and the lag between those hops.

  • -4

my 5g plan is still cheaper, more stable and faster lol.

  • Would this work on a caravan?

    • +1

Yes, but only in the registered cell location

    • +3

      https://support.starlink.com/topic?category=2

Service is only guaranteed at the Service Address on your order. If you move Starlink outside of its assigned area, a satellite may not be scheduled to serve Starlink and you may not receive internet or may receive degraded service. By changing your Service Address, you may not be able to return to your original address based on service availability. Once updated, service at your previous address will be disconnected.

At this time, we are not able to support moves to a different country. Our teams are actively working to make it possible to use Starlink on a moving vehicle (e.g. automobiles, RVs, boats) in the future.

Note: Orders are fulfilled based on the date of your initial Starlink order; if you move to a new location, your place in the queue at the new location will still be based off of your initial order date.

It’s like they might be prioritising rural areas that actually need it

  • +7

Starlink is fantastic. As someone living in a rural area, it is amazing to actually have a proper internet connection.

On Starlink I'm getting download average speeds of around 300 Mbps, before Starlink my internet connection was about 10 Mbps.

While playing Halo Infinite online I'm getting pings of 30-50 ms (I'm not sure where the servers are located though).

Before getting Starlink I could only dream of playing a game online, so those pings are fantastic as far as I am concerned.

Starlink is a game changer for people living in rural areas!

    • -2

It's a shared bandwidth, so… enjoy while no one else around you uses it. And if you think that with your praise of Starlink to your neighbours it's going last…

      • per satellite bandwidth is around 20 Gbps and the final constellation size is 12000 satellites. That's 240 Terabits per second total network capacity.

The reason the latency is so low is due to ground stations all over earth and the LEO of the satellite, many more than for example iridium certus etc. Thus much higher capacity.

Do you really think the engineers wouldn't have accounted for scale?

This from a sister company of what is now the most valuable vehicle manufacturer on earth (more than the combined value of Toyota, Volkswagen, Daimler, GM, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Fiat Chrysler and Ford).

It will be fine. Technology only improves. The satellites burn up every few years and get relaunched.

        • Yeah, and Starlink also needs 30B now to not go bankrupt, because you know,.those 12000 satellites cost a lot of money. And It'll only get worse, because, yeah, the more satellites out there the more money it needs. That's how real world works.

You can find statistics online and it barely reaches 30Mbit down in Northern America.

You can start here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YLWlALwObA if you interested to know more, but I bet you won't.

          • @[Deactivated]: I’ve seen this video, some is accurate.

Some is reminiscent of $TSLA loons, and some is just outright false.

Also the blanket statement that everyone is getting 30mbps is also false.

Go onto the starlink reddit and have a look. I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want this to be successful. Imagine if you could give internet to developing nations cheaply and efficiently.

As we’ve seen time and again, Elon musk has no issues tapping into his personal wealth to fund his ventures.

            • @meowsers: Feel free contact author of video with your rebuttals, I'm sure he'll be happy to hear your very educated opinion.

    • Agreed, we are in a semi rural area. Skymuster was woeful for latency and cost per GB. 4g reception is poor in area as tower is too far away and land is undulating.
Starlink allows us to have decent internet with 150Mbps+ ,reasonable ping and unmetered usage.

  • Efficient ion thrusters, powered by krypton, enable Starlink satellites to orbit raise, maneuver in space…

This sounds like some out of starwars

  • Plus cause I like the word / company name "starlink"

  • Mega multinational corporate satellite based ISPs will be the final nail in the coffin of free speech. Terrestrial ISPs will die off as the ISP sector will enter a hyper consolidation era that led to mega giants like FB, Google etc. Only a handful of individual owners will control what is globally allowed to be said and not said over the internet.
    Totally f….g scary

  • +3

Got starlink today. 365mbps down 40 up ping 36ms.

Added to WAN2 if/when nbn goes down. Have 1000/50 free for 2 months from swoop and then will churn or cancel and just run starlink for a month with launtel as a backup as they can provision fttp pretty much instantly.

Hoping to take this with us when we go to the holiday house etc. once they allow it to be truly mobile and not geo locked will be great

  • I just tried my victorian address and I keep getting this error: WE'RE NOT ABLE TO PROCESS YOUR REQUEST AT THIS TIME. PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER.
