  • Has anyone tried using this for reading comics?

    • I can't see a problem if that is all you plan to use it for.

    • I have the 8" one (pretty much the same specs) and it works really well for web comics and the cyanide and happiness app.
I'm happy to test other things for you if you like so long as I don't have to buy anything.

      • Hi! Thanks for your reply. I read mostly Marvel, DC and Dark Horse comics. The dimensions for comics are usually 17 x 26 cm. How's it like reading it on a smaller screen?

        • +3

In bed, on the couch, at work or when my GF takes us on a long random drives to nowhere it's fine. It's never caused any issues. No sore eyes, headaches or anything like that.
It sizes pages or images well and the pinch to zoom works perfectly if I need to see something in more detail. It sucks in the Sun though, just very hard to see anything on the screen.
Regarding the 17 x 26 (I'm assuming cm's), if you have a link I can check it out for you.

  • so how is this for stuff like angry birds for kids? Some others i tried before are sluggish

    • +3

Just installed it on my 8" and played the first few levels. Other than tiny staggering as the birds fly, it runs smoothly. I had to test it a few times to actually see the stagger so it's not something you'd notice unless you were looking for it.
The new space Angry Birds runs just as well, if not better.

  • hmm, no gps?

Seems like the Hyundai A7 might be a better $100 Android tablet? Problem with the A7 though is that it'll take a month to arrive from wherever you order it from.

meh, lots of tablets around at that price point, eg http://www.buyincoins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&p…

Do they have a capacitive screen and multi-touch?

      • of cause they do.

    • well looking at specs, it says multi-touch capactive screen. battery is 3200mah. wireless-n. android 4

    • only if this supported 3G, I'd be all over it.

Just be aware that if you have any Netgear modem/router it the Wi-Fi connection drops out a lot and can't reconnect without the modem/router being power cycled. I've tested about 8 different Netgear modem/routers now and have had the same problem as most other people. Every other modem/router brand I tried has been fine.
I'm not sure about the 7" but the 8" has a lot of apps hidden in the market. I had to root and edit my screen size info file to make them available or copy the apk from a friends phone.
Otherwise I've been pretty happy with my 8".

    • I've had problems associating to wifi if the router's wireless channel is above 11. Might be the problem in your case too.

      • I generally use 6 (depending on what channels other people around me are using) but I tried changing them, it doesn't help.

workmate bought one recently. crap screen. alright for kids. I'dinvest $ in a better tablet.

Surely a second hand original iPad is better value?

    • Yep!
One of the guys from work got one of these and the battery barely lasted a few hours and the screen was horrible.

      • You have to 'root' it to disable the telephony features of the OS to get better battery life and only enable Wifi when you need it. And it is NOT Rechargeable via usb port, so you only have the a/c power pack as a charging option. Was very disappointed at this oversight.

    • +3

I agree, but a 22nd hand iPad is not all that cheep.

      • +3

A 22nd hand ipad should be virtually worthless :)

  • had a look at a work colleagues.

Button Layout isn't the best for a android 2.X device..

Volume buttons are in the status bar. The buttons on the side which would normally be volume buttons are two of the normal android 2.X device buttons(menu and back) i think.

Wouldn't be too bad if it could be upgraded to ICS and a normal-ish button layout restored, but this is highly unlikely.

This also uses a Mini B connector rather then a Micro B which seems to be standard on most devices now.

  • Hey guys, thinking of getting one of these as an ebook reader…is it best to get a dedicated ebook reader or one of these?

    • +3

      A dedicated ebook reader.

If you're planning to use it predominantly for reading books, e-ink is going to be much easier on the eyes.

      • Totally agree with gilbarc. Buy a kindle or equivalent. Longer battery life (weeks not hours), better on the eyes, lighter and less glare.

        • For reading, yes - get an eReader. Better screen, lighter, far better battery life.

I got a Nook Touch for $150 shipped. Worked nicely, but when I rooted it & installed the Android Market, I could then also install the Kindle app. DropBox, comic readers, Wikipedia, Google Books etc. All the advantages of an eReader, and I can still run many apps on it like a tablet.

        • i just wonder if you can read the ebook reader in the dark without turning on the light?

        • You can buy reading lights for them fairly cheaply, and some cases come with a reading light built in. They're much better for reading with the lights out — reading from a backlit screen in the dark kills your eyes.

      • Definitely get an eReader that uses e-ink.

  • look at their own kogan tablet prices. make me lol
