HP Microserver N40L $221.09 + Shipping with FREE DVD-RW Drive

420

Hey guys

Was just looking on the Dessytek website to check the status of my order and noticed that all new orders now receive a HP DVD-RW drive free of charge. I know it may not be much however it could be what pushes some people over the edge on this deal.

They are currently in stock. Please note that this deal does not apply to current orders. This is not Dessytek's fault as it was an unannounced wholesalers bundle which they did not know about until now (apparently), for more info see comments on last page over here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66236?page=2

Also, I believe that postage costs less from Dessytek than the site in this deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67059), at least it does for where I live

Pick-up is available with the other deal(http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67059) but not with this one, so it may be worth your while if you live near the store

Happy bargaining everyone.
I'm Ron Burgundy?

EDIT: Also note the disc drive is external so will require self installation, though apparently it is "easy"

  • You "believe" a lot of things. Do you work for them ?

    • +4

haha, no I do not. I just have an odd style of writing :/

    • +3

      There, less belief :)

    • I ordered Monday, it arrived Canberra today. DVD drive is full height and was HP brand. I also own n36.

      • WTF? I likewise ordered Monday and got told 3 weeks backorder…

        Just how does that work?….

        • Must of got some of the last ones. Order via PayPal inv 37250

  • Comes to about $8 more for me, but then you get a DVD/RW with this one.

    Quite tempted. Thanks!

  • So, do they open the box to put the ext DVD drive into it?

Could the box have been open before…? (Are these used or new?)

Nice freebie, if S+H are competitive with i-Tech…

    • No, the ext drive comes in a separate box apparently, which you then have to install.

These are brand new stock, should be unopened

    • No, the ext drive comes in a separate box apparently, which you then have to install.

    • +2

And i got excited and pressed post too many times…

      • Not to worry… It's the OB web app at fault, not you.

/. makes posters wait some minutes between posts,
sometimes even giving a count-down to "OK to Submit"
        (for your -2nd- post)

So, if it's an ext drive, what's to install?

Just plug-in while needed & remove at other times…

        • yeah pretty much :P

        • Actually its not an external dvddrive. If you search for the product code its an internal one http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product/sku/10265814/mfg_partno/62…

        • When he says "ext drive", I'm wondering whether he means "an internal drive that does not come pre-installed", rather than an external USB drive…

  • not bad for this price, but got one from the megabuy deal about 1yr ago… it's a great little box :)

  • -1

waiting for till price hits $100 just like the xbox 360 @ DSE

    • No proof anyone got one for $100 though, just a piece of paper ;)

I doubt these will get much cheaper.

  • can't find any hdd info?

    • Your right, the other one states a 250GB.

These usually come with a 160GB/250Gb.

You'd think it would say, maybe it doesn't come with one?

      • +2

I googled model number HP 658553-371-B1 and it seems it does not include any hdd. So the bouns dvd-rw drive is not much of a bonus as no hdd is included.

        • +1

I was thinking the exact same thing. Was so close to buying it too, been staring at it in my cart for the last 30 minutes haha.

      • buying from spotit with 2x KVR1333D3E9S/4G @$37 each. deal mentioned in other thread.

      • No, click on the PDF or HTML (format link) to get spec's.

        It says 250 GB @ 7200 RPM

        Correct me if I'm wrong… :-)

  • FFS

I just bought one today from spotit for $219 wihtout the dvd drive :(

    • Don't worry. Great value anyway. DVDs are dirt cheap now.

Careful, Dessytek is a drop-shipper. Sold a lot of N36Ls in the original fiasco without having any stock of his own.
    Then had to refund people.

    • +19

That wasn't dessyteks fault, it was because MegaBuy bought all the stock behind everyones backs for their little price-fixing racket.

      remember…
All your microserver are belong to us

    • Bought from Dessytek and my N36 arrived quick and in perfect condition, would buy again if I wanted one of these, turn you negativity towards Megabuy, they bought the lot and then upped the price to take advantage of peoples need to get on the buying bandwagon.

      • I'm not the one voting negative. Just saying be careful - e.g. I should have paid him by credit card instead of bpay, and would not have had to go to Megabuy. Dessytek is cheap & honest.

  • +2

I've had no troubles with Dessytek (who is also bidbox, RPM Computing and Pacific Notebooks), and much prefer dealing with them to Megabuy, iTech, etc. At least he answers his emails and will sort problems.

  • +4

    http://www.dessytek.com.au/store.php?desc=HP-658553-371&spec…

    That one seems better?

Same price, states 250GB plus free DVD drive!

    • I hope it's the one we all get shipped.

      Nice 3 year warranty…

      • +2

        Nice 3 year warranty…

That's under "optional upgrades" and costs an extra $180. Better off just buying a 2nd server.

  • Does DessyTek's BPAY Cust Ref #'s -vary- with customer & order?

Is there a relation between my order # & my CRN?

    TIA

    • Should be a biller code, same as everyone elses. Then a reference number, unique per person.

  • Thinking of buying one, buy a low power VGA with HDMI.

    HD DVB-T or similar. Plenty of PCE-I 1x DVB-Ts.

Basically have it as a media box for my TV, with PVR function.

    Obviously more RAM too.

Think it would be powerful enough to do the above? Apparently they decode blu-rays so it shouldn't be a problem.

    Megabuy reps in 3.. 2.. 1..

    • +1

Heard a rumour they are having a sale on DVD drives soon! Keep an eye out!
      LOL

    • +1

they must be busy answering the fan mail :)

  • Can someone recommend a cheap GPU to go with this? Thinking of using it as a cheap HTPC rig (needs to be able to decode 1080p video).

    • +1

      http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=6178
      ASUS 1GB 5450 PCI-E VGA Card
      Price: $37.00
Low profile design with low profile bracket bundled

      • +1

Would you know if it works with ATI HD6450?

        • +1

          Yes it will.
          I had ASUS HD6450 on my N36L

      • Hi, quick question: if I am only outputting 720p, is the onboard vid card's VGA output sufficient? Or do I still need to buy a low profile dedicated video card?

        • The integrated video can display 1080P.
The problem is it will not decode hi-def h264.
If your source is HD-TV (720 or 1080i mpeg2) or similar divx / AVI files, the onboard plus cpu should be fine.
At least in Windows. The Linux drivers for ATI are poor.

And you'll still need a USB sound dongle/box.

        • +1

I'm not sure about the 720p output quality, but I think you still need to buy either the graphics card or the sound card as the server doesn't have onboard sound card.

I'm using ASUS HD6450 which will play the movie with HDMI audio passthrough

        • arrgh i forgot about the stupid sound. thanks.

    Stay Classy, Australia!

  • Is it possible to cancel a prior order for the same item and reorder this one? Has anyone had any experience on a similar matter with DessyTek.

    • Phone him and ask. Probably depends on the supplier and if it has shipped. Is it really worth the hassle for all though?

    • do u really want the dvd drive? i read people hack this so you can put extra HDD on that dvd bay ie you can have 5 HDD !

      • Depends if you will use it. In my case I'd rather the extra hdd, it is a centralised storage after all. Some users even go as far as installing a 5.25" rack that will hold 4x additional 2.5" hdds/ssds for over 12gb+ in JBOD (4x2tb 3.5" + 4x1tb 2.5").

NB: if you want to utilise the full speed (sata2) of the ports you will need to flash a custom bios to enable this.

        • When people talk about attaching extra HDs via the esata port what device do they use I know there are simple dual bay ones but what about x3 3.5hd or even 4 x 3.5inch housing drive bay unit thing.. Do they exist?

  • I am looking for a home NAS server (raid 5 with 16 TB). Can someone please suggest me a better option? This one has got only 8TB maximum storage I guess.

    • I'm sure you can get at least 12TB in here. I have a 3TB HDD in mine and it picks it up fine. I remember reading somewhere that the Southbridge is limited to 3.2TB. Can't find the source, but I wouldn't want to risk buying a 4TB drive only to find it's undetectable. Anyone using a 4TB in theirs atm?

      • Think it will run with 5x 3TBs? Power req. wise I think it will handle it if you omit the gpu.

      • The Specifications says

        Maximum Internal Storage Non-Hot Plug SATA 8TB (4 x 2TB) 3.5" SATA

        http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13716_div/1371…

        • +1

lol well, I can tell you for a fact that I have 5 drives in mine atm. 3x 2TB, 1x 3TB, 1x SSD for OS. Might be a total of 8TB if you're raiding, I have no idea about that.

There's also a hacked bios that you can apparently install which will allow the use of the eSATA drive, but again, I haven't done any reading into that just yet.

Power wise I think it should be fine. Idling each of mine only draws ~8w, under load it's closer to 11. If you had 4 under full load that's < 50w, so it should be fine.

EDIT: These are 2TB WD Caviar Black drives I'm talking about too

    • +1

If you want to be an uber-geek, you can cram a lot more than 8TB in there…

      Check this setup: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1038191914&postcount=497

Software RAID5 will probably be disappointing performance-wise, and Hardware only supports RAID0 and RAID1.

      • I'm thinking of cutting up and opening up the space under the drive bay, you can easily fit another 3.5" drive in there. Just trying to find a good way to cut it up and retain structural support. I saw someone do this in a forum but lost the link.

      • Thanks a lot Michalek and youknow. Guess I will buy this one in that case…

  • I've just asked MSY if I can use this memory: (Kingston KVR 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3 1333)
    http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=6869
    and they said NO.

I think some people said they are using it. Has anyone here tried it ???
    Thanks!

FYI, a few updates on this deal:
    URL changes:
    N40L without DVD-RW: http://www.dessytek.com.au/store.php?desc=HP-658553-371&spec…
    N40L with DVD-RW: http://www.dessytek.com.au/store.php?desc=HP-658553-371-B1&s…
The URL posted by the OP will now take you to the non-DVD-bundled version of the deal.

The ones without the DVD-RW are available immediately, the ones with it have a 3 week ETA according to an email I recieved earlier tonight. Considering it's highly unlikely you'd recieved your order (for the non-DVD-bundle) before the middle of next week, I am going to hold out for the DVD-RW unit. Even if you're not going to use it, it GENERALLY retails for well over $50, and the cheapest I've seen it is $30 (altough that supplier doesn't have any in stock). The tightarse in me won't turn down extra hardware for "free".

Final note, Dessytek charge 2.4% on credit card or paypal transations, so if you're going to pay by these means, then the total deal price will be about $5-$6 more than the total of item+shipping.

    • +1

I got the same email too :(

I must say I am slightly disappointed that this was not clearly stated at the time of first listing the promotion as I would have thought they should have known there was no stock on hand.

either way, i'm still a sucker for free hardware plus it's not like i was going to be able to play with it over easter :(

    • i didnt get this email…

      • Hopefully that means you don't have to wait :)

        • one would hope so, but a followup on the order due to the fact of zero communication since confirmation of payment received indicated that delivery should be expected by 10th April… so much for heaps of others receiving their already… and i think i've ranted enough on other related posts how MegaBuy seems to have outdone themselves as I should be expecting my RAM modules for this rig before the rig itself arrives… not my initial expectation. Oh, and before anyone gets any ideas - MegaBuy sux!

    • FYI, the two links above (bundle & no bundle) are both priced at $554.39. Given that these things tend to go for $250-$300 in a lot of places "normally", am I being to harsh in calling this a bait & switch….?

      • Wow, they really have gone up! They were both $221 yesterday, and I think this morning. So I guess it lasted at that price for 36 hours or so.
I'm basing this on other online retailed behaviour (so it may not be the case here), but generally pumping up the price like that means you're out of stock (or almost), but you're not admitting to it. Either way, a little disappointing all round… was a good deal while it lasted, pity about the 2-3 week delay caused by the lack of DVDRW stock.

        • Another theory, but along the same lines. The email sent out to people who ordered the bundle said you could opt to have the non-bundled N40L shipped to you immediately. Bumping the price up may be a way to reserve stock for those who "flip" from the budled to non-budled option. Only a theory, and giving them the benefit of the doubt.
