Do cars get lonely?

When I park in a car park I always try to park well away from other cars.

Several reasons I do that is less chance of car doors hitting my car, easier to load the car up as I can open my doors fulling, less chance of being blocked in and walking another 50 plus meters is not going to hurt me. At times I could have 30 plus empty spaces around me.

My question is do some car owners think cars get lonely as there seems to always be a car parked beside my car when I get back from shopping.

    Seriously?

    • +3

      Thanks for asking, cheers.

    • I think OP should pat his car on the bonnet when leaving and assure it that they will be back soon.
Probably should tell the car where they are going too.

Dont forget to buy a Christmas present for your car!

pat his car on the bonnet

        I think you mean bonut.

    • -1

I actually do think my car will be lonely and will park my car next to another car…

    No

    drugs are bad…… Mmmmmmmmmkay

    • +1

      Ok Mr Mackey?

    • Yep, time to get off the gear I think.

  • +23

    R U OK?

    Not you OP, the car.

  • +5

Put cameras around the car so they can see for themselves. Oh wait that’s Tesla…..

  • +1

    ok

  • +60

Its f'ing annoying when you take the time to park away from everyone just for someone in a Ford Fairlane park next to you when there are 28 bays elsewhere.

    • +8

This happened to me today. Empty spots everywhere, and (in my area) the white Camry squishes right next to mine, after taking 3 goes to reverse park.

I just watched and shook my head.

I think some people require that other car to line up against. Their driving/parking skills are far too limited to be able to do it on their own.

      • +4

I have never thought about that but that sounds like a plausible explanation as to why some people park right beside others.

      • +3

Nah. The Camry driver was probably just looking for some company for his car.

        • +5

Probably looking to add another classic Camry dent on their rear bumper

  • +14

Feeling empathy for inantimate objects is very humane. I dont think you're alone.

Goodness me, I got censored for saying I love one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time, while people further down talk about penises. How odd.

      • +2

Don't take it personally, people always get upset when I pull out my Red Dwarf in public ;(

        • It's a harsh world for sure.

        • Maybe it was your use of the word "Dwarf"……

I'll never forget what they did to my boy Pluto, cast him aside because of size :( To me he will always apart of the original nine…..

If you park far away, you must care about your car, and you're less likely to want to dent it.

Therefore, I should park as close as possible to you because you'll protect one side of my car. You won't open your door and smash mine, for starters.

Thanks for parking away from everyone else so I know who to park next to.

    • +36

      This guy parks

    • I do it as well

  • +5

Mine calls me in the middle of the night sometimes.

  • +2

And I’m Lightning McQueen and my gf is a Porsche named Sally. 😂

  • +9

Lol i get what you're saying OP. I always park furthest away from the entrance and for some reason people will come and park next to me despite the 100+ spaces available nearer to the shop.

    • +1

If there's two people who want park furthest away from other cars they will inevitable park right next to each other.

  • +3

About as lonely as the OzB forum gets when we don’t get a shitpost for 24 hours.

    • +1

As a serious answer the person who parks there probably realises that you also don’t want your door dinged and will be less likely to ding their door as well.

  • +12

I pee on my back wheel after I park my car. I tend to find others do not park around me.

    • +4

It's also why you're banned from every hire car company

      • +1

        Enterprise still love me!

  • +10

No no, I get what OP is saying. I also park away from other cars, and every f'ing time I get back to it, there are other cars around me.

    • +2

Haha I thought I was the only one. It drives me nuts…

  • +9

Ok so I'm a bit like the OP… But I understand why people do this, and will try provide a somewhat legit response.

I believe others use your car to gauge and line up their car to park as best as possible within the parking bay, by using your side mirrors and distance to your car to get a bit of a sense of parameters within their parking bay. This is a "pro tip" my driving instructor gave me way back when I was a learner.

That said, this was way back when we didn't have 360 cameras and sensors… So in this day and age, yes maybe cars do get lonely too!

    • +3

There's another reason too. It's a perception that if you park next to other cars, it's likely to be safer from theft & vandalism than if you park alone somewhere in the open where it can be targeted easier.

      • +6

But you could also argue that having a another car provides cover/hiding for the thief, makes it little less obvious to by-passers?

        • +1

Sure. You could indeed. Some people find safety in numbers though.

      • +2

Its actually the opposite, other cars provide excellent protection from being spotted while theft and vandalism take place. Most criminals are dumb as dog turds, but they still will generally prefer easier targets that provide cover rather than a lone car in the open that lets them be spotted easily from multiple directions.

        • You don’t need cover for modern car thefts as everything’s electronic now. It’s not really a bloke in dark hoodie jimmying the lock or window.

Neighbours Mercedes was targeted by thieves as was parked in open area in front of their house, I watched the whole security cam video. Guy walked up to it, had some device that clearly scanned frequency and unlocked car then literally got in and drive off. Barely took 10 seconds.

    • +1

Another aspect to add to this is the pack animal mentality. People don't like going out there on their own, they like being surrounded by others and following the orders of others, with the thought pattern being if you're following others and the order of others it's less likely you'll be doing something that can be perceived as 'wrong'.
Through parking next to someone who's already parked you're reducing your chance of doing something the pack doesn't agree with as someone's already done it and you're surrounding yourself with others, which is emotionally comforting and safer than doing it alone.

  • +9

The title made me think you're a loonie but it all worked out once I finished reading. Completely agree!
Like people who stand next to you at the urinal when there are other free spots.

    • +6

Like people who stand next to you at the urinal when there are other free spots.

So the people who park next to the OP's car are just having a cheeky look?

      • +4

        Do peoples penises get lonely?

        • +3

mine always has my hand as company

        • +3

          Username seems appropriate

        • +3

Mine doesnt.. I call mine matters.. Im always taking matters into my own hands.

    • The title made me think you're a loonie but it all worked out once I finished reading.

I couldnt get past the title….

    • Like people who stand next to you at the urinal when there are other free spots.

I wonder what Mr iNeed2Pee has to say about this. 😄

    • What’s the matter? Stage fright?

  • Ah I suppose weekend has arrived.

  • +2

    🤣

Omg! I laugh because we have the same thoughts! If we've parked miles away, surely, to any sane person, the implication is a big neon 'f off' sign above my car.

Yet, without failure, some knob not only manages to park in one of the adjacent spare parks (rather than the other dozen available) and dent, scratch, park a trolley or challenge me to get in with a can opener.

    Who are these people!? 😐🤔

  • +6

If you ate yourself, would you double in size? Or completely disappear?

What did you smoke? not usual stuff?

  • +2

Some people don't realise there is a car park outlined on the ground and only think of parking somewhere when they see another car. Just like some diners don't consider a restaurant until they see people dining there.

    • Well, generally the more crowd the better food.

  • Covered in the French movie "Holy Motors". I think french movie is enough warning….

  • Always getting crazy,
    Always getting high,
    Always say forever,

    Party Till We Die!

  • Yes. our family car always feel dark and lonely in an isolated car space

  • -2

Of all the dumb shit I read on this site, this has just moved the bar to an all time absolute new low.

    • +1

I think OP should ask Pam’s psychic to listen to how OP’s car feels.

  • -2

It's cause it is easier to know your in the park and inside the lines, when you can line it up with another car that's parked. I find it easier tbh. But I'm lazy and wouldn't do that if you where parked at the other end of the car park. But if i see a car close and it's doesn't have anyone parked next to it and there is plenty of car parks. Yep I'm one that will park next to you.

  • +6

Place one of those huge teddy bears in the passenger seat of your car, and your car will never be lonely again, no matter where you park it.

    • +2

i try avoid parking next to cars with a childseat

so that's a free hot tip

  • Totally.

  • +7

    Pet peeve of mine too.

Thats why i always search for a end bay and hug the curb.

    • why kerb hug?

      • +3

        It looked lonely.

      • Better to hug trees

      • +1

Hopefully to avoid a door ding/scratch.

I have matte paint and can’t buff it if it gets scratched.

  • +4

Oh definitely. I see a car parked way off by itself, I have to park next to it so it doesn't feel ostracised by the carpark cool kids.

  • +1

OP, how can mirrors be real if our eyes aren’t real?

  • +4

It's almost like people see cars parked away with plenty of space around and think to themselves "Well we can't have this now" and proceed to park next to you

  • +5

Pack mentality & safety in numbers….

When travelling the outback I often park my campervan in the middle of nowhere in huge areas for the night, often I'll wake in the morning with a hoard of backpackers around me, and not just in my general vicinity, it can be a football field size area and they'll park 1m away….

    • +2

Oh this poops me so badly. Same thing in the Simpson desert. Same thing in bloody Gove. At least when you go more remote (hay river tk, Anne beadell hwy, CSR, the more experienced people those places draw will at least ask you when you cross paths 800x over the trip, otherwise will make a point of giving space)

  • While you are shopping, your car may or may not be lonely, as you can't see it.

  • -1

I run my keys down the side of every SUV I see

  • When did Car Parks become Tinder for Cars?

  • I always park next to the parked cars, I figure that those cars aren’t going to hit me as they are already parked.

    • Why are cars parked in Shopping Malls?

Are they smart and super careful, lost (or just shy?)

I figure Shopping Trolleys are hazardous…

    • You seem to underestimate the ability of cars hitting yours on their way out…
