  • How is the battery life on this chonker? Would it last atleast 6 - 7 hours for normal office use?

    • The product specs say up to 8 hours

      • +18

        Okay, so realistically half that.

        • Lol, yeah most likely depending on the use

        • I have the same model, which lasts around 4-6 hours depending on what I'm using it for (generally just light internet browsing and Microsoft word on medium performance). If you want to really crank everything down I'd say it could last 7 hours. On the other hand, playing a game like Destiny 2 would get you medium graphics and around 60fps for a solid hour. Though I wouldn't recommend this if you were only using it for office work, it's pretty heavy and bulky.

    • I haven't used this model, however in Windows you can set power options to reduce battery usage, especially with screen dimming, CPU…
My 7 years old laptop goes from 30 min to couple of hours when done so.
I doubt anyone can give you a definite answer

      • +1

Your 7 year old laptop still lasts a couple of hours? Mine barely lasts 5 min and is going straight to the tip as soon as I can reformat the drive.

        • +2

Why not try to replace the battery if the performance is good enough? Otherwise at least take out the memory and sell it

          • @reloxation: Not sure if it’s worth replacing the battery as it’s an old, heavy HP laptop that doesn’t seem to support windows 7 (well, I can’t find the drivers anyway).

            • @spasto: Fair enough. Put it up on Gumtree or FB then for dirt cheap, someone might want it for a linux machine or something

        • 5 mins that's great my one battery is flat only way to do it is plugged in

        • Guess it's been connected via the power adaptor even when it is not in use?

          • @Romper Stomper: The only way I can use this laptop is to connect it to the mains unfortunately.

            • @spasto: to prolong the battery life, when the laptop is not in use, unplug or turn off from the mains.

              • @Romper Stomper: Yup, have been doing this on my newer laptops. For work, it’s easier to just keep laptop plugged in.

                • @spasto: Acer Care can limit the battery charge to 80%

    • As long as the nVidia chip is off it'll last about that.

    • 2.5 hours max for normal use. If you game 1.5 hours. I have the i5 version.

      • I haven’t used mine on battery much though this sounds about right. Gaming laptops + battery life don’t really go well together, even when not gaming.

    • Its entry level line of thier laptops + its got decently powerful parts so I'd guess 3-4 hours on battery saver mode and low brightness.

As someone who got a gaming laptop for uni, bringing one for office use would be not ideal.

    • I own this exact laptop from the last deal. Battery like is sub 4hrs on battery saver. You'd be lucky to get 3hrs tbh.
      The battery is tiny.

    • +1

mine with i5 version lasted around 6 hours on integrated graphics and at 60hz with 4 hours of Word/Excel/Xero and 2 hours of Youtube. If it's on dedicated graphics at 144hz, it's a short 2.5 hours.

    hashrate?

    • Around 35-40 depending on silicon lottery.

    • -1

I wouldn't mine on a laptop. The sustained heat is not a good idea.

      • +1

It's fine I reckon. The thing stays at 90° during gaming and throttles itself. Same thing would happen mining.

You wouldn't get your money back in power use is the problem.

      • +1

Nothing wrong with mining on a laptop, however I would consider the removal of the battery if doing so (and if possible).

    • +1

u can get 41-42.5 with bios unlock.

temps arent that bad around 65c

  • Nitro 5 is better with i5 with less thermal throttling.

    • +1

You can also undervolt for less throttling

      • -2

As far as i remember cant undervolt on intel laptops since like 4th gen

        • i had been able to undervolt until 10750H… i got 10870H and cant undervolt anymore…

        • I've undervolted a 9750H about a year back. No issues here 🤷‍♂️

      • Yes you can. However, I reckon i5 won't bottlenect RTX 3060 if it is just for gaming. Actually the 10300H with RTX 3060 might be a better deal for pure gamers. You can alway upgrade your RAM by accessing the RAM slot after openging the back lid.

        • Can't undervolt these 11th gen cpus on the Nitro 5 unfortunately. It's locked.

  • -2

    Cheap miner + gamer.

    • Nowadays mining doesn't provide much profit.

      • +1

Moving is a long term investment. People that think that it'll make them rich overnight are ngmi.

Have been waiting for this since I got the HN 10% off eGiftcard from last time, thanks a lot OP!

    • How to get 10%?

      • +1

SB has 5% off GC normally.

      • +1

it was only for an hour on shopback then they ran out

  • Great hardware for the price. Shame about the screen though.
    Here's a review:
    https://www.ultrabookreview.com/48602-acer-nitro-5-an515-57/
"some good FHD and QHD screen options, but not the AU Optronics 144Hz panel"
    The good: 144Hz, IPS
The bad: 250 nit, 60% sRGB, slow response time

  • +1

Which is more powerful? This one or XSX? Because most XSX games will be day one release on PC as well, is this better buy than XSX? Or XSX will be stronger?

    • If you are comparing just gaming then XSX/PS5 (even at the current inflated prices) are better value. But XSX won't let you use windows applications like Microsoft Office and replace a computer.

    • I have this model laptop and XSX and i'd recommend the XSX if you don't need the computer functions.
I only use my laptop for competitive FPS games otherwise the XSX is my go-to

    • well dont forget with a laptop its actually more portable than an XSX…

    • XSX = 4K gaming
This laptop = high 1080p gaming and more portability, have been playing Far Cry 6 on it and have been pretty impressed so far

  • +1

Note that this device comes with Single channel memory meaning you won't get good gaming performance out of the box. You need to open it up to stick in another ram stick for better performance.

  • I bought the i5 on the last deal and it’s great, come close to the price of this one once I put in extra 2tb nvme and 32gb ram in it.

The monitor and brightness is completely fine, it’s a significant upgrade from the 1060 version of this laptop

    • +1

Who cares what he says? I’ve got one and it great

  • Am I right to assume that an extra $200 for the i7 and 16Gb RAM is better value than the other deal posted for the i5/8Gb variant?

    • +1

If you're just gaming on it - get the i5 and add on another 8gb stick,

      • Would be gaming as well as general productivity and some CAD/Fusion360

        • yeah alright - get the i7

  • +1

Anybody use this with a 1440p external monitor? Is it capable of pushing that many pixels is ACV and similar games?

    • +1

I have been playing Far Cry 6 on an external ultrawide monitor in 2560 x 1080

      • +1

        Great thanks mate.

  • A best deal for a sub 1500 gaming laptop

    • Is that a question or a statement?

  • Hello, What type of RAM in this
    1Rx16 or 2Rx8 ?

I am after a gaming laptop. Would I just be better off getting the i5 version of this and putting an extra 8gb stick in it even though it is 1Rx16 RAM?

    • SK Hynix 16gb 1Rx8 HMAA2GS6CJR8N
      (is in mine)

For gaming the i5 11400H version will get slightly lower (~5%) fps on high settings, to ~10-15% lower at low settings.

TBH, difference in gaming is probably more due to the L3 cache size (being 24MB in the i7, and only 12MB in the i5) rather than +2c/4t or the higher max clock speed.

      • I just checked mine - it also has the SK Hynix 16gb 1Rx8 HMAA2GS6CJR8N

Need to look into getting an identical second RAM stick, if possible

  • Is this better than Dell XPS 13 from this deal?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/666680

    • +2

They are completely different laptops, this is a gaming laptop with a RTX3060 GPU, whereas the Dell does not have a discrete GPU.

      • Though this is a gaming laptop, can it do everything the Dell model can? Or is it limited in someway for everyday use? Thanks
(Other than touch screen and flip)

        • +3

If you specifically need a gaming laptop the Acer nitro is awesome value, whereas the Dell is much better quality overall but without the GPU for gaming.
Yes the specs of the Acer look good on paper, but limitations reported by others appear be poorish build quality, low battery life, poor screen, loud fans, slow ram. And I am guessing the Dell will be significantly lighter and less bulky.

In my opinion the Acer makes a great desktop replacement whereby you use an external: monitor+keyboard+mouse.

If you need portability with little emphasis on gaming then the Dell is much better. But goggle some reviews on the Dell first before buying.

  • In case anyone is considering purchasing this laptop (AN515-57-79U4/NH.QEUSA.001) in the future, be aware that it does NOT support Thunderbolt 4 or DisplayPort Alternate Mode via USB-C. Hence, the display configuration is limited to a single external display via HDMI (this is a dealbreaker for me and I'll be attempting to return it to Harvey Norman for a refund). The absence of this functionality is quite baffling, as it's present on the less expensive model (AN515-57-54ZA/NH.QDGSA.002). Additionally, the RAM configuration is a single module of Samsung M471A2K43EB1-CWE (16GB, 3200MHz, CL22, 2Rx8). Finally, the M.2 NVME SSD is the SK Hynix HFM512GD3JX016N.
