Looks to be same model as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/643288 which I bought from. The 32GB RAM that mine came with was the decent faster timings, so no need to upgrade. I assume this model will be the same, but don't hold me to that.
Only difference being it is Windows 11. Ensure to go to https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/socket-fp5-mobile/am… and update the drivers to ensure there are no performance issues with Windows 11.
Arguably the best 3070 laptop on the market right now.

Been using this laptop for the past 4 months, its a beast.

    • +1

Do you connect it to an external monitor? Wondering how well these laptops perform at 3440x1440.

      • +7

        Mine is connected to a Xiamoi 34" at 3440x1440 @ 144Hz.
        Runs pretty damn good.

        • Great! Thank you for this information.

        • Same setup, and pretty happy with both device

      • I have a lower version of this connected to a 4K@60 and 2K@165 and it works fine.

      • I plug mine into my LG C1 OLED using hdmi and it takes full advantage of 120hz gsync thanks to the hdmi 2.1 port. You just need to make sure you use a hdmi certified 48gbps cable.

    • +1

      Have you tried VR?

  • hashrate?

    • +2

      i saw 58 to 61

      • Have you seen the main afterburner settings? I have not had much luck, though with little time, getting it to 55+

        • Reddit had same issue though they did some tweaks but some say got it to 61 stable

But yeah I want to start as wish to offset the cost of this Lappy haha

          • +5

@agalea101: You're game doing that with a laptop. I'm running some desktop GPU's for this and they run damn hot. Couple that with a small laptop chassis and you're not only risking the GPU, but you're risking all of the other component within the chassis (battery/cpu/motherboard/ssd).

To recoup even a fraction of the costs you'd need to be running this laptop mining quite a lot…

            • +1

@sghetti: Kind of, maybe. It can be more of the, "Mine at night" and HODL the ETH. Probably be worth more than the laptop in a few years.

The other thing is, and you are right, but with good settings, the hashrate efficiency and heat is less than gaming.

              • @Bargain Seeker: Hashrate efficiency through overclocking and underclocking, while it can reduce power draw and lower temps somewhat. Is still quite high on newer cards with higher bandwidth memory. Most temps measured on cards were related to GPU temps. ETH mining hammers the memory which in previous-generation cards wasn't really monitored or factored into it. With the new and far greater hashrates on the 30 series cards comes far greater temps from the memory modules and controllers.

The memory junctions on the 3080's and above in particular constantly sit at 104 degrees plus on the desktop GPU's. I'd say these issues wouldn't be too dissimilar on the mobile GPU's either.

            • @sghetti: Ok maybe not will stick to Qantas points churn and burn haha

Don't wanna risk this beautiful beast 😂

              • +1

@agalea101: I would ignore sghetti as it sounds like they don't know what they are doing mining wise. Mining on mobile 30 series cards it actually pretty decent.
I finally replaced my work laptop with a 3070 model from Acer and it mines at 60c without issue and the 3080 and 3070 in my two family computers barely push past 58c when mining. If you have a good solution mining isn't an issue at all and it doesn't in most cases tax a card like gaming does.

                • @Beerforkids: Ah ok then

Will be using a cooling stand overnight

Maybe a month off in between quarters?

Not sure will do some Reddit research haha

                  Thanks 👍

                  • @agalea101: Yeah also the GPU temps on this Legion are quite good. Even gaming on AAA titles seeing 140W 100% GPU usage for hours… I don't think I've seen it go above 75c. I usually have GPU Overclocked via bios (Core +150 and VRAM +300) too.

                • @Beerforkids: Is mining that profitable from home systems, vs the power it uses? It just barely make anything.

                  I spose, better than nothing.

                • @Beerforkids: I'd be careful with pushing comments like that. I could also say my GPU temperatures don't pass 52-55 degrees as well. But that's not what I'm talking about.

It's the VRAM and memory junction temperatures that are the most important in the newer cards. I haven't seen anyone spruiking below 70 degrees on a desktop 3080 without heavy mods or water cooling and ambient temperatures lower than what we normally get in Aus. So I'd love to see how you're managing less than 60 degrees on a home setup ;)

For clarity, I'm not saying it's not worthwhile, everyone's situation and circumstances are different. I'm just warning that there will be significant temperatures involved in the process.

                • @Beerforkids:

I would ignore sghetti as it sounds like they don't know what they are doing mining wise

i'm not sure why you would make a comment like that. sghetti pointed out that memory is where the issues lie and as most cards don't monitor that temperature nor do they typically throttle to prevent damage in these areas, these are the most susceptible to damage. This is particularly pertinent on a mobile GPU as the fan typically doesn't encompass that area and only covers the GPU itself

My Infinity laptop with 3070 MAXP I got back in March- been hashing at ~57 @ 120W with +400/+600 in Afterburner. Easily made back over half the purchase cost as I only use the laptop when I travel away for work.

      • What are you mining?

        • Just ethereum, first through Nicehash and now just with a mining pool.

    • +4

Buy $10 worth of crypto currency of your choice each month instead of killing your laptop IMO

  • +8

This is a brilliant laptop. Had it since earlier this year. The only issue is that if you are used to a keyboard which is in centered , then the offset keyboard on the Lenovo takes a while to get used to.

  • +4

Unconfirmed for today but I priced one of these up through the EDU store for about $2300. Same specs but only 16GB of ram. If you watch Jarrod's tech video he suggests replacing the ram anyway as it's a bit slow.
So this might be the way to go for some of you.

Great Laptop and great deal regardless.

    • which month?

    • Yeah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUbryj294Cs&ab_channel=Jarro…
But it seems 32GB were shipped with decent timing RAM.

      • +4

I just upgraded to 64gb. I know for some it's overkill, but it's helpful for premiere pro and lots of chrome and brave tabs open.
Feed it more, it uses it.
Way off topic, but my M1 Mac with 8gb is so throttled all the time with the low ram. It hurts productivity

      • +2

You can grab yourself a 64gb 3200mhz kit from amazon for $333 and sell the stock 16gb kit. Making it a better deal than paying $300 more for only 32gb.

        • is that hard to install? void warranty?

          • +1

@nng526: It’s very easy to install and will not void the warranty in anyway. Just look up a guide on YouTube.

            • @Brrrrt: People generally won't need 64gb of RAM compared to the 32gb from this deal.

EDIT: ops replied to the wrong user, was for @nng526

            • @Brrrrt: Can you do this for the other model recently on sale for $998? It's got 16GB, I think 32GB would be nice.

              • @[Deactivated]: which model? Most gaming laptops have two sodimm slots and can be upgraded

Edit: actually i just saw it, you meant the ideapad slim5 right? that model does not have free sodimm slots and ram is soldered on so not upgradable

    • Decent price - only slightly more than previous deal Lenovo eBay 20%-discounted price

      Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (5800H, RTX 3070 140W, 16" WQXGA IPS 165hz 500nits 100% sRGB, 32GB, 1TB) $2,623.20 Delivered @ Lenovo eBay

OP alluded to different memory timings on same model?

    • How did you price it? I don't have edu access, alot don't.

      • I have EDU access. You just have to know someone with an EDU address really and use their login.

How do these compare to a 3070 desktop? I'm thinking of replacing both my desktop and laptop with something new

    • +2

      Suggest you watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL3cRsKlDR8&t=609s&ab_channe…
He doesn't test this model specifically, but it will give you an idea.

    • +2

The 3070 desktop is about 30-40% faster depending on task/game. The mobile 3070 is beaten even by the desktop 3060.

    • +3

Benchmarked on Forza 5 and ran great in performance

Played in ultra and got 58 or mid 60s I can't remember

I'd watch Jarrod Tech on YouTube. He's great and he goes in depth with gaming and all round specs of laptops

Mine is 3070 with 32gb ram

    • +1

      About 25% slower

    • Thanks everyone - you're awesome!

    • Don't forget the fans on the laptop will be on full blast.

      • I'm debating to buy this instead of a desktop.

Moving interstate for 4 years but don't like the idea of having to carry or shift a desktop and takes up a lot more space. Hmmm decisions decisions..only want the laptop/ desktop for VR and exercise with quest 2

And potentially other VR systems later

  • -8

This has heaps of hertz and gigabytes! You'll get heaps of FPSes in Minesweeper! Sick AF!

  • +5

looks like a really good deal but lifecycle wise would it be good to get this now or hold out for the newer models that will be coming out?

    • +3

Definitely, the old model will only get cheaper with time-assuming you dont need a laptop this urgently.

Firstly there is intel, the new intel 12th gen seems an even bigger step up from 10th to 11th gen, with e core support fixing one major problem of 11th gen vs zen3-battery life. As far as benchmarks go, the multicore performance for the h45 chips also far exceeded both zen3 ryzen 9 and 11th gen i9 chips.

Ryzen is a bit of let down this coming CES, the zen3+ 6000 series will have slight improvements to architecture and mainly focusing on an upgrade for the igpu-a feature that can be mostly ignored on a gaming laptop. It will definitely be interesting to watch how they fare on a thin n light laptop though, since the low wattage zen3 apus are a beast this generation.

The major performance update for ryzen laptops will probably come late 2022/early 2023 with zen3D mobile. But its a bit of a wait.

      • cheers for the detailed response, much appreciated. so new ryzen will be late 2022, early 2023, do you have an idea of when the new 12th gen Intel will be releasing and then make their way into laptops?

        • +1

12th gen mobile will be announced at this coming CES from 5-8th of January and production was already shipping to laptop makers three weeks back. Most probably we can expect the first batch to hit the shelfs somewhere around Feburary/March.

As for zen3d timeframe that was just my guess, since we have not had any concrete evidence yet. All we know is that the desktop versions of zen3d will come early 2022.

          • +1

@Brrrrt: hmm decisions decisions, I'm not dying for an upgrade given it sounds like the newer Intels are just around the corner but at the same time this discount definitely making it harder to resist this product at this point in time. I think I'm leaning towards holding out though since as you said it's not urgent and what's a few more months right?

            • +2

@arnie123: For sure, since you sounds like you already have a laptop, it's only better to wait, if the 12th gen come out to be as good as leaks suggest, than you are in for a treat. Even if they didnt, you can just grab a zen3/11th gen on sale for cheaper than current pricing. Or you can wait even longer for zen3d haha

              • +1

@Brrrrt: yeah exactly, thanks again for the info! it's helped in my decision

                • @arnie123: My pleasure to help a fellow ozbargainer ;)

No thunderbolt 4 for a laptop this price I would expect it as standard.

    • +5

You can't get thunderbolt 4 on AMD laptops

      • you can on AMD desktops so why not laptops? I know this because my amd motherboard has thunderbolt 4

        • +4

Thunderbolt is controlled by intel and co dev'd by apple, they allow it for amd desktop because there is much less use for thunderbolt on the desktop platform. Meanwhile its a feature that is crucial to some workload/use settings, namely egpu support and connectivity while ports are limited. They dont want to allow amd to set foot in this market. AMD is already the best at lower wattage x86 based laptops, letting amd have tb support on laptops is like giving away a core market that would otherwise traditionally have belong to intel and to a lesser extent apple.

          • +2

@Brrrrt: thats not true at all any more thunderbolt is now a open standard and is not controlled by intel any more that is why AMD motherboards now have it. If it wasn't Intel wouldn't allow it on AMD anything.Lastly there are laptops with thunderbolt 4 and Ryzen CPUs on the market here is one for an example https://www.banggood.com/AMD-VersionXiaomi-RedmiBook-Pro-15-…

Thre are not restriction to thunderbolt any more it is a standard that can be used on intel and Amd CPUS alike manufacturers are the issue choosing to put it on or not to put it on there.

            • @kungfuman: Mate… First the link you sent me was broken, secondly as far as I know there are no tb amd laptop ever. The redmibook came with both intel and amd versions. And only the intel model came with a tb port.

              • -2

@Brrrrt: I think you need to learn how to use a computer mate because the link does work I just clicked on it.
and yes there is THUNDERBOLT AMD laptops I just sent a link to it. Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro.

                • +2

@kungfuman: No need to attack me? It literally says 'Due to policy reasons, this product does not exist'.

Also I am pretty sure you confused the AMD and intel version of this year's 15 pro:

The intel version comes with a tb port, while the amd version does not.

                  • @Brrrrt: as kungfuman has stated, the thunderbolt4 tech/chipset can be licensed to be used on any platform now. there are no restrictions other than cost.

it obviously hasn't been taken up much by manufacturers but they have the option to do so now, including AMD powered laptops

                • +2

@kungfuman: I think you're the one who needs to learn how to use a computer and understand that
sometimes cookies change how links work. You can't send us a link of your gmail account and expect us to see your inbox.

        • +2

From my understanding, TB is open for anyone to use but AMD must still pay licensing to use it. I think they are planning to start doing so in 2022.
Also regarding the redmi book 15, I think it's just banggood being lazy with its specs update.

          • +2

@XeKayeM: Lol not laughing at anyone but I laughed at the Gmail comment 😂😂

  • What's the battery life on this laptop? Reviews seemed to indicate you need to turn on Hybrid mode for battery life which apparently is detrimental to performance

    • +1

Its a gaming laptop so while reviews may get it down to 8-9 hours I say realistically with hybrid mode on you can get 6-7 hours with non-gaming/workload usage with hybrid mode on.

It is indeed detrimental to performance but you really arent supposed to game on a gaming laptop on battery power to start with. And with MS office/web browsing taskes the hybrid mode have no impact on.

      • +1

I got about 3hrs on full charge.

        • Damn thats shorter than i expected for an amd laptop. Is that with hybrid mode on or off?

          • +1

@Brrrrt: Would also depend on refresh rate. Taking it down to 60hz would help

            • @Mttogo96: Fair, my asus laptop automatically switch to 60hz when I run it off battery. Granted i dont have a mux switch in the first place.

    • +1

I have this and battery life is pretty garbage especially for office use because as soon as you plug in an external monitor (i.e. projector/TV) it uses the dGPU.

For using standalone it's not too bad, you just have to kill all the shitty Windows Store processes that are using the dGPU.

You can trickle charge this off a 65W or greater USB-C charger, so I got a tiny Heymix GaN brick instead of the huge chungus 300W brick.

      • What port did you use?

I assume HDMI port will still use the onboard gfx card… USB-C will use dGPU…

        • HDMI uses dGPU

  • FYI looks like 32GB per slot is the maximum it can handle, so 64GB memory in total. Not bad at all

  • If only i did not drop $2800 for Alienware M15 R6, the shipping time for Legion 5 Pro was really long before

    • I believe these ship within 2 business days. Just like last deal in Aug when I bought mine. Arrived very quickly.

      • Now when they have stock, yes but 3 months ago, the wait was lengthy. This laptop is much better value.

  • Looks awesome!
Can anyone please comment on its fan noise when it's working hard?
    Thanks.

    • +1

Its a gaming laptop so it will get loud. Certainly not louder than the competitors but you will definitely need a headphone when gaming.

      • +2

You don't need headphones.. I've been gaming at work with the speakers set to 50% volume.. no issues gaming with the fan noise

        • +1

Clearly you don't work, if you're gaming at work? 😂😂😂

@[Deactivated]: They could be a game tester XD

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: technically I'm getting paid while gaming… which makes me a professional gamer :P

on a more serious note we have alot of standby time at work on certain shifts..
4.5hrs of nothing on Sunday (double time) was the perfect time for some BF2042

            • @Megahowler: Firefighter?

My mate does absolutely nothing, but lift weights.

But I could now understand the importance of a gaming laptop ☺️

I always thought they'd have Console there, but I've never asked.

              • @[Deactivated]: We have a very well equipped Gym, Pool table, Table tennis and several gaming PCs at work.. I just wanted my own personal equipment..

                Train Driver ;)

                • @Megahowler: I spose some people get lucky with their jobs 😂

                  Can't complain about that!

          • @[Deactivated]: Nah sometimes just call in sick but hide under desk all day for free wifi..can also install curtain

Do need to be careful tho if you knock over the 'storage' bottle

    • Reminds me of the PS4 pro abit haha but that's expected if your pushing it in performance mode and ultra settings

Quite mode and work stuff it doesn't make a peep

    • +1

I posted a bunch of things but looks like I broke a rule sorry.
Basically keeping thermals in check can reduce the fans going max. A cooling pad, adjust CPU boost mode, and look for Legion Fan control program (LegionFanControl takes advantage of hidden settings within the embedded controller of Lenovo Legion laptops to influence fan behaviour).

      • +2

Additionally to reiterate … lower temps = less fan work.
1 - Elevate the laptop off your desk (I used lego to prop up the back of the laptop until I got myself a Klim Cyclone cooling pad) to get better airflow from underneath. This can reduce temps by 10c just by doing it.
2 - There is a cmd prompt command you can run to unhide the Processor performance boost mode in the power plan. I disabled the CPU boost to get way better temps with little no impact on gaming FPS.
3 - Legion fan control app can help ramp fans up before temps get too high sort of thing. I have been using it for a week or two now and results seem better than stock fan control.

From what I have read on Lenovo discord servers … don't consider repasting to get better temps. The paste that Lenovo use is believed to be honeywell thermal mat, and it is quite high grade paste. People have gotten no change or worse temps attempting to repaste.
